This study was conducted to investigate the combined effects of oyster shell, fly ash and gypsum on rice yield and quality. The four treatments of soil amelioration were oyster shell 4, fly ash 80, fly ash 56 + gypsum 24 and oyster shell 0.8 + fly ash 40 + gypsum 24 ton/ha. Rice yield were in the order of oyster shell, fly ash and control plats. The pH, EC values and OM, Ca, $SO_4$, moisture contents of the top-soil after rice harvesting in soil amelioration treatments were increased, while Mg, Na, Fe, Zn and Al were decreased than those of control. Rice quality was the best in the fly ash plat due to lower T-N and higher Mg/K ratio.
In highland crop fields, saprolite is piled up approximately every three years as deep much as 20 to 30 cm because farmers expect that adding new materials may improve productivity and mitigate hazards by continuous cultivation of a single crop. Piling saprolite, however, has been reported to induce poor soil drainage. Effects of deep ploughing with a spading machine and an excavator were studied in sites located in Daekwanryeong-myeon, Pyeongchang in which soil physical properties were deteriorated by piled saprolite. The soil made of parent material of Samgag series was piled up over surface soil of Haggog series naturally developed in the area. Carrot was cultivated in the field. Productivity and growth factors of carrot were compared among control and deep ploughing by a spading machine and an excavator. Effective soil depth extended to 60 cm or greater by 60 cm deep ploughing by an excavator or 50 cm deep ploughing by a spading machine. On the other hand, effective soil depth was within 50 cm at control plot. Productivity of carrot responded to amelioration of soil physical properties. The productivity was greater in deep ploughing treatments than that of control or 30 cm ploughing. It suggested that increased productivity by deep ploughing was mainly related to breaking plough pan which inhibited extension of rooting zone.
An experiment was conducted in 1990~1991 to study the effects of various soil amelioration on the soil productivity and machine workability at tidal land paddy field of Kyewhado Substation, Homam Crop Experiment Station. The soil, Munpo Series(fine sandy loam, Typic Fluvaquents) was treated with gipsum, rice straw, rice straw compost and foreign soil(at 20cm depth) after deep ploughing. The results are surmerized as follows. 1. Sand and clay were slightly increased, while silt was slightly decreased in the rice straw and compost plots. The soil texture was changed from loam to sand loam by the addition of foreign soil 2. Soil bulk density and porosity was decreased in the rice straw, compost and foreign soil addition plots. 3. Cone penetration resistance was $12.5kg/cm^2$ at 10cm of soil depth before experiment and $12.5kg/cm^2$ at 20cm of soil depth after experiment except control, and the root zone was expended down to 20cm. 4. Soil salt content before experiment was 0.46 and 0.48% for surface soil(10cm) and subsoil(20cm), respectively ; The salt content of ameliorated plot was 0.26~0.32% and 0.16~0.31%, respectively, indicating good leaching of soil salt by the soil improvements. 5. The yields of rice in different treatments were in the order of the foreign soil addition > compost > gypsum > rice straw > control.

Much oyster shell is breeding by character and conduct of oyster-industry for a long time among them. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the recycling possibility of waste oyster shells, which induce environmental pollutions by piling up out at the open or the temporary reclamation. The purpose of this study is to develope eco-friendly binder using waste oyster shells, and to reinforce soils fur soft soil improvement. In this paper, a series of laboratory tests including compressive pot tests were performed to evaluate characteristics of soils treated by developed waste oyster shells with different water content of soils. Based on test results, eco-friendly Supporter manufactured from waste oyster shells were estimated as good resource materials for soft soil improvements. We got the conclusion by a series of experiment, It is verified that change of pH of soil is improved by mixing with oyster shells. The homogenization method for deducing apparent of oyster shells, which can consider micro-structure of mixed soil, is introduced. The improvement treatment leaded to enlarge fluctuation of soil moisture content. The effect of calcium concentration was good though improvement treatment of physical property. In addition, the crop yield in amelioration plots increased. It means that the increase of crop yield was caused by improvement of soil physical properties rather than improvement of calcium concentration.
This study was conducted to estimate the proper particle size of Zeolite particle as the soil conditioner for sandy soil. On sand columns filled with different size of sand fractions, Zeolite particles of different size were applied. Tap water was percolated through those columns under the same water level as paddy soil during rice growth. The > 0.1mm fraction of Zeolite was not vertically moved although the water was percolated for 96 hours. The < 0.1mm fraction of Zeolite was moved out 85.7% in 2-1mm, 32.64% in 1-0.5mm, and 24.5% in 0.5-0.25mm sand column, respectively. The proper diameter of Zeolite particle for amelioration of sandy soils widely distributed around river side in Korea was estimated as 0.25-0.1mm fraction in consideration of its pore size.
The field of ground amelioration, many construction methods have been developed more prosperously up to now, but even now, the majority focuses on the improvement of ground strength. And they could not suggest concrete solutions to the occurrence of environmental issues. To address this problem, soil improvement methods employing organic acid materials have recently been developed as eco-friendly technologies for increasing the soil strength, but details regarding the basic stabilization mechanism are not known yet. Against this background, this research was conducted to examine the soil stabilization mechanism; for this purpose, unconfined compressive strength and pH tests were conducted by using an improved eco-friendly organic acid material. The test results revealed that the samples processed with the organic acid showed a considerable increase in the unconfined compressive strength over time as compared to the strength of the samples that were processed without the organic acid. It was also confirmed that the organic acid material promoted microbial breeding and improved the soil structure by reducing the volume of the voids in the soil. Therefore, the sustainable development of this method needs to be analysed more in the future.
This study was carried out to find the problems of assessment on terrestrial ecosystem part in environmental impact analysis(EIA) and to suggest the proper amelioration measures by analyzing 19 environmental impact statements(EIS) published during the period from 1991 to 1994. The results obtained from this study were as follows. Field survey for the investigation of fauna and flora in project areas should be conducted at least 3 times a year and name of investigator should be written on the EIS clearly. Increase or decrease in degree of green naturality and productivity cannot be an absolute criteria for expressing the amount of changes in ecosystem. Evaluation for the ecosystems and their composition in project area is more important than presenting merely the increase or decrease in degree of green naturality and productivity. Alleviation measures in 19 EISs analyzed in this study were summarized into 6 types: They are establishment of landscape plan, transplanting of useful trees preservation of big tree and protected species, restoration and preservation of existent vegetation, establishment of soil conservation measures and diminution of the impact on animal. However, they were somewhat insufficient because they wouldn't suggest the alleviation measures in detail. The more positive counter-proposals are needed to decrease the impact of the project on terrestrial ecosystem.
The individual and combined effects of acidic rain, Mg deficiency (-Mg) and Al surplus (+Al) on the growth of shoots and roots of pitch pine seedlings and the effect of humic substances (Lit) on Al toxicity were investigated. The growth of height and dry matter were not significantly less for pitch pine seedlings sprayed with simulated acid rain (SAR) of pH 3.5 than for those sprayed with SAR of pH 5.6. But treatments of Al and +Al-Mg in soil solution reduced the growth of seedlings in terms of height of shoots, and dry matter of shoots or roots. Effect of Mg deficiency on the growth of seedlings was apparent only when Al was treated simutaneously. The growth of seedlings, regardless of rain pH, decreased in the following order: control=-Mg>Lit+Al>+Al>+Al-Mg. Treatments of Al and +Al-Mg in soil solution reduced the total length of secondary and teritary roots of seedlings regardless of rain pH, and decreased in the following order: the primary root

This study has its aim to judge both applicability and suitability of recycling of waste soil for the use of farmland amelioration and low-lying farmland reclamation through growth and development experiment and component analysis. As results of physical characteristic evaluation on recycling of waste soil, the classification based on unified soil classification system has investigated as SW and SP affiliation and soil classification has appeared to be a loamy sand. As results of chemical component analysis, pH has appeared to be 7.0~8.4 which is relatively higher than general soil, however, heavy metal has investigated within the 1 region's standard value of soil pollution standards. As results of germination experiment, when using it by mixing recycling soil less than 75%, there is no significant influence on germination, and in the growth and development experiment, when using horticultural bed soil which is mixed with less than 40% of recycling of waste soil, it has confirmed that there is no significance difference with general soil. In case of farmland, the growth disorder of recycling of waste soil rate no more than 40% has shown that it has relatively small influences, and in case of using it by mixing with agricultural soil, it has evaluated to require concrete review of factors which may restrict growth condition including nutrition and pH.
The island alpine biogeography of Mt. Halla (Hallasan), Jeju Island (Jejudo), Korea is discussed. The presence of numerous species of alpine flora on Mt. Halla, the southernmost distributional limit for certain species, may primarily be attributed to palaeo-environmental factors, since it can not be wholly explained by reference to current environmental conditions. The alpine flora on the peak of Mt. Halla, mainly above 1,500m a.s.l, is evidently descended from immigrants from NE Asia via the Korean Peninsula during the epochs of the Ice Age. These plants, which are very intolerant of competition with temperate vegetation, have been able to persist in alpine belts thanks to their harsh climatic conditions, sterile soil, rugged topography and cryoturbation. The alpine plants on Hallasan are in a stage or process of retreat toward the mountaintop, most likely due to recent climatic amelioration. The lower limit of some species seems to coincide with maximum summer isotherms. The continued survival of arctic-alpine and alpine plants on the summit of Hallasan, Jejudo, the Korean Peninsula, however, is in danger, if global warming associated with the greenhouse effect continues.
