While characteristics of topography, soil, and vegetation coverage were surveyed, also surface runoff and soil erosion for each rainfall event were measured to analyze effect of change of land cover conditions in mountain areas, Yangyang, directly after wildfire. Fifteen rainfall events were taken in total during the survey period. The result of this survey appeared that the amount of surface runoff and soil erosion are a great difference between plots with rapidly recovered vegetation and bare plots after wildfire. The burned plots where vegetation recovered rapidly generated two times or more of surface runoff and soil erosion than control plots, as burned plots with bare soil showed about ten times of surface runoff and sediment than control plots. The result of correlation analysis between main parameters of the surface runoff and soil erosion presented that rainfall factors and vegetation factors had significant effects on runoff and soil erosion. The sensitivity of runoff and soil erosion showed specially high correlation with vegetation indices. If the land surface disturbed by wildfire are recovered by natural vegetation as time passes, runoff and soil erosion may be decreased gradually. Because runoff and soil erosion in the areas with rare vegetation or bare soil are generated continuously, the discriminated mediation strategies would be established as condition of each region.
The purpose of this study to present updated regional annual mean rainfall erosivity data in the Republic of Korea. In 2012, Ministry of Environment in Korea published the notice about investigation and survey procedure for the amount of topsoil erosion and adopted USLE (Universal Soil Loss Equation) model to predict the amount of national-scale soil erosion in Korea. In the notice, regional rainfall erosivity values for 158 sites, which is essential to apply the USLE, were included, however, these values came from the data made before 1997 and need to be updated. This study collected, classified and combined annual mean rainfall erosivity data from the literature review to analyze the data. We presented that new iso-erodent map, interpolated by IDW (Inverse Distance Weighted) method and extracted updated regional annual mean rainfall erosivity data at 167 regions for 1961~2015. These values will be used as updated rainfall erosivity data to predict the amount of topsoil erosion in Korea.

Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution is a serious problem causing the degradation of soil and water quality. Concentrated overland flow is the primary transport mechanism for a large amount of NPS pollutants from hillslope areas to downslope areas in a watershed. In this study, a soil erosion model, nLS model, to identify transitional overland flow regions (i.e., ephemeral gully head areas) was developed using the kinematic wave overland flow theory. Spatial data, including digital elevation models (DEMs), soil, and landcover, were used in the GIS-based model algorithm. The model was calibrated and validated using gully head locations in a large agricultural watershed, which were identified using 1-m aerial photography. The model performance was better than two previous approaches; the overall accuracy of the nLS model was 72 % to 87 % in one calibration subwatershed and the mean overall accuracy was 75 to 89 % in four validation subwatersheds, showing that the model well predicted potential transitional erosion areas at different watersheds. However, the user accuracy in calibration and validation was still low. To improve the user accuracy and study the effects of DEM resolution, finer resolution DEMs may be preferred because DEM grid is strongly sensitive to estimating model parameters. Information gained from this study can improve assessing soil erosion process due to concentrated overland flow as well as analyze the effect of microtopographic landscapes, such as riparian buffer areas, in NPS control.

Soil erosion has caused serious environmental problems which threaten the foundation of natural resources. In this paper, we chose RUSLE erosion model, which could be connected easily with GSIS and available generally in mid-scale watershed among soil erosion models, and extracted factors entered model by using GSIS spatial analysis method. First, this study used GIS database as soil map, DEM, land cover map and rainfall data of typhoon Memi (2003) to analyze soil loss amount of Dam basin. To analyze the changes of soil loss in considering basin characteristics as up-, mid- and downstream, this study calculated soil erodibility factor (K), topographic factors (LS), and cover management factor (C). As a result of analysis, K and LS factors of upstream showed much higher than those of downstream because of the high ratio of forest. But C factor of downstream showed much higher than that of upstream because of the high ratio of agricultural area. As a result of analysis of soil loss, unit soil loss of upstream is 4.3 times than soil loss of downstream. Therefore, the establishment of countermeasures for upstream is more efficient to reduce soil loss.
To evaluate the soil erosion best management practices, many computer models has been utilized over the years. Among those, the USLE and SWAT models have been widely used. These models estimate the soil erosion from the field using empirically-based USLE/MULSE in it. However, these models are not good enough to estimate soil erosion from highland agricultural watershed where severe storm events are causing soil erosion and muddy water issues at the receiving watersheds. Thus, physically-based WEPP watershed version was applied to a watershed, located at Jawoon-ri, Gangwon with very detailed rainfall data, rather than daily rainfall data. Then it was validated with measured sediment data collected at the sediment settling ponds and through overland flow. In this study, very detailed rainfall data, crop management data, soil data reflecting soil reconditioned for higher crop production were used in the WEPP runs. The $R^2$ and the EI for runoff comparisons were 0.88 and 0.91, respectively. For sediment comparisons, the $R^2$ and the EI values were 0.95 and 0.91. Since the WEPP provides higher accuracies in predicting runoff and sediment yield from the study watershed, various slope scenarios (2%, 3%, 5.5%, 8%, 10%, 13%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 23%, 25%, 28%, 30%) were made and simulated sediment yield values were analyzed to develop appropriate soil erosion management practices. It was found that soil erosion increase linearly with increase in slope of the field in the watershed. However, the soil erosion increases dramatically with the slope of 20% or greater. Therefore special care should be taken for the agricultural field with slope greater than 20%. As shown in this study, the WEPP watershed version is suitable model to predict soil erosion where torrential rainfall events are causing significant amount of soil loss from the field and it can also be used to develop site-specific best management practices.
The Doam watershed is located at alpine areas and the annual average precipitation, including snow accumulation, is significant higher than other areas. Thus, pollutant laden runoff and sediment discharge from the alpine agricultural fields are causing water quality degradation at the Doam watershed. To estimate soil erosion from the agricultural fields, the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) has been widely used because of its simplicity to use. In the early spring at the Doam watershed, the stream flow increases because of snow melt, which results in erosion of loosened soil experiencing freezing and thaw during the winter. Also, extremely torrential rainfall, such as the typhoons 'RUSA' in 2002 and 'MAEMI' in 2003, caused significant amounts of soil erosion and sediment at the Doam watershed. However, the USLE model cannot simulate impacts on soil erosion of freezing and thaw of the soil. It cannot estimate sediment yield from a single torrential rainfall event. Also, it cannot simulate temporal changes in USLE input parameters. Thus, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was investigated for its applicability to estimate soil erosion at the Doam watershed, instead of the widely used USLE model. The SWAT hydrology and erosion/sediment components were validated after calibration of the hydrologic component. The R$^2$ and Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient values are higher enough, thus it is found the SWAT model can be efficiently used to simulate hydrology and sediment yield at the Doam watershed. The effects of snow melt on SWAT estimated stream flow and sediment were investigated using long-term precipitation and temperature data at the Doam watershed. It was found significant amount of flow and sediment in the spring are contributed by melting snow accumulated during the winter. Two typhoons in 2002 and 2003, MAEMI and RUSA, caused 33% and 22% of total sediment yields at the Doam watershed, respectively. Thus, it is recommended that the SWAT model, capable of simulating snow melt, sediment yield from a single storm event, and long-term weather data, needs to be used in estimating soil erosion at alpine agricultural areas to develop successful soil erosion management instead of the USLE.

The objective of this study was to introduce the current status and development strategy for the environmental restoration of stream side in Japan, and to consider the methodology which could be effectively applied to the environmental restoration of stream side in Korea. 1. We should establish a new paradigm of forest conservation and erosion control which can emphasize the restoration of the stream side ecosystem and reduce soil movement in the areas. Also, in the past, the objective of forest conservation and erosion control was to fix soil by constructing permanent structures. The direction of future forest conservation and erosion control needs to be new forest conservation and erosion control technology to prevent large scale soil movement but allow small scale soil movement to conserve sound ecosystem and biotic habitats. 2. In the past, the goal of forest conservation and erosion control planning was to fix the amount of soil movement by constructing permanent facilities. Forest conservation and erosion control planning in the future needs to change the techniques which could prevent soil movement from large scale of soil disasters, but allow soil movement effectively to a small and middle scale's soil movement. Also, it is considered to change erosion control dams from non passing type to passing type. 3. In the point of ecological conservation aspects, we should evaluate the effects of new forest conservation and erosion control methods which are emphasized on the restoration of the stream side ecosystem. Also, forest conservation and erosion control construction projects for restoring stream and river ecosystem should be planned for perfectly restorating their ecosystems by the way of sustainable maintenance and management. 4. The restoration direction of stream and river ecosystems needs to be restoring the diversity of small geographies such as waterway, shoal and puddles rather than flattening stream bed. And the restoration of the stream side ecosystem should provide continuity of the stream side environment which allows desirable biological habitats, and environmentally sound facilities to harmonize with the environment.
Recent climatic changes by global warming include increased amount and intensity of rainfall. This study was conducted to find out possible roles of turfgrasses to reduce the impact of climatic changes, especially surface soil erosion. Soil erosions by intensive rain were measured after each significant precipitation from the artificially sloped plots of zoysiagrass, cool-season grass mixture of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass and other typical korean summer crops. Sodded zoysiagrass resulted in minimal annual soil erosion followed by strip-sodded zoysiagrass and cool-season turfgrass mixture while dry-field rice and bean cultivations eroded the surface soils of 5 to 10 MT $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ and pepper cultivation resulted in 7 to 14 MT $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ annual loss of surface soil. Annual loss of surface soil from bare land with hand weeding was up to 18 MT $ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ while greatly reduced soil erosion was observed from weed grown treatment.

Heavy rainfall intensity may cause shallow slope failures and debris flow by rill erosion and scour on land surface. The paper represents the difference between native soil (weathered soil) and reinforced soil, which is mixed by hardening agent with flyash as main material, for investigating experimental findings of rill erosion and erosion. Results obtained from artificial rainfall simulator show that erosion rate of reinforced soil mixed with hardening agent is reduced by 20% because an amount of eroded soil on slope surface is inversely proportional to the increase of soil strength. For example, rainfall of 45mm (at the elapsed time of 25mins in rainfall intensity of 110mm/hr) triggers rill erosion on native soil surface, but the rill erosion on reinforced soil surface does not even occur at 330mm rainfall (at the elapsed time of 3hrs in rainfall intensity of 110mm/hr). As a result of slope stability analysis, it was found that the construction method for reinforced soil surface would be more economical, easy and fast construction technology than conventional reinforcement method.
Attention to munitions constituents such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) in the firing ranges is increasing due to their toxicity and high mobility to the environment. It is helpful to use a systemic model to predict the amount of contaminants for the establishment of environmental management of firing ranges. This study employed Training Range Environmental Evaluation and Characterization System (TREECS) program to estimate the mobility characteristics of TNT and RDX via groundwater leaching, soil erosion and surface water runoff. The prediction results of the TNT and RDX migration with TREECS showed that 68% of initial TNT and 21% of initial RDX were discharged through the soil erosion and the 20% of initial TNT and 54% of initial RDX ran out the firing range via the groundwater leaching. The rest of the initial TNT and RDX moved to adjacent surface water via surface runoff. The data suggest that soil erosion and surface runoff occupying 80% of TNT to the total amount are important migration pathways. On the other hand, groundwater leachning occupying 54% to the total amount was also important pathway for RDX.
