The costal reclamation construction is for making reclaimed land by dredging marine clay with seawater, and then bringing the dredged soil into the reclaimed land. During the process, the dredged soil in the reclaimed land undergoes the sedimentation-consolidation process. Among the processes, the consolidation is a very critical factor when planning reclaimed land because of its requiring time and settlement. In order to predict the requiring time and settlement, the Column test, which was suggested by Yano, has been usually used in the nation. However, the test method needs a very long time to identify the characteristic of sedimentation-consolidation of dredged soil. Therefore, in this study, in order to supplement the weakness of the Column test which needs such a long time, and in order to identify the characteristic of the sedimentation-consolidation for dredged soil in a short time, the Geo-centrifuge test was examined as an alternative method. The result considered that Geo-centrifuge test would be useful to identify the characteristic of sedimentation-consolidation for dredged soil efficiently.
Clay or sand does not exist alone but various sizes of soil are mixed in the field. In this study, the effect of water content on large deformation of such mixed soils is studied by using soil column tests and a particle method. A soil column with 7 cm in diameter and 13 cm in height, which was made out of kaolinite with sand content of 0, 10, 25, or 50%, was tested for large deformation. Its deformation was monitored with time. While increasing its water content from 40, 60, to 80%, a total of 12 types of soil column tests were carried out. The particle method simulated their deformation with time. A maximum plastic shear modulus, which was a function of undrained shear strength and plasticity index for soils with different water contents, was associated with soil viscosity to simulate large deformation of soil column. When a sand content of soil column was constant, the deformation of soil column increased with increasing water content. When a water content of soil column was constant, large deformation occurred with increasing the sand content. The maximum deformation, which was 22 cm in diameter, was observed in the case of water content of 80% and sand content of 50%. The particle method was able to relatively well simulate such large deformation and stress change of soils.

Column experiments were peformed to evaluate the efficiency of surfactant flushing for remediation of non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) in the soil under controlled conditions. In column experiment less than 0.1 % of the original mass of tetrachloroethylene (PCE), remained in the column after 15 pore volumes of 1% sorbitan monooleate solution were passed through columns. To determine the influence of soil parameters that may affect the remediation process, column tests were repeated with different values of grain size, application rate, surfactant type, surfactant concentration, and solution viscosity (polymer mixed with surfactant). Experimental works suggest that surfactant flushing has a great potential to rapidly remove mass from NAPL in the soil.
This paper presents an experimental investigation about visualization of bulging development of geosynthetic-encased stone column (GESC) based on the digital image correlation (DIC) technique and transparent soil. Visual model tests on GESC and ordinary stone column (OSC) were carried out. In order to delete the warping effect resulting from transparent soil and experiment setup, a modification for experiment results was performed. The bulging development process of the GESC and the displacement field of the surrounding soil were measured. By comparing with the existing experimental and theoretical results, it demonstrates that the model test system developed for studying the continuous bulging development of GESC is suitable. The current test results show that the bulging depth of GESC ranges from 1.05 to 1.40 times the diameter of GESC. The influence depth of GESC bulging on surrounding soil displacement is 0~3 the times diameter of GESC.

Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) is a technique in which secondary- or tertiary-treated wastewater is infiltrated through unsaturated soil and stored in the saturated zone. In SAT, contaminants are removed by physical and biochemical reactions taking place in soils. In this study, a numerical model was developed to predict changes in water quality during SAT operations. The contaminant species considered in the model were ammonium, nitrate, dissolved organic carbon, and dissolved oxygen. The model was calibrated against experimental data obtained from one dimensional soil column tests conducted for 84 days. The calibrated model will be used to find out optimum conditions for the pilot- and regional-scale SAT operations to be scheduled for the next phase of this project.

A computationally efficient algorithm to analyze a group pile behavior is proposed by consideration of both soil-pile and pile-cap interactions. Using toad transfer method the nonlinear characteristics of the soil-pile interaction for a single pile is modeled by piecewise linear soil springs (p-y, t-z, and q-z curves). Beam-column method, one of the most practical approaches, is used for numerical modeling of the soil-pile system. In addition to the group effect resulting from the soil-pile-soil interaction, for a more realistic analysis it is essential to consider the effect of pile-cap interaction including geometric configuration of the piles in a group and conectivity conditions between piles and the cap. This paper mainly focuses on the pile-cap interaction and the development of a rational numerical procedure of its incorporation with the beam-column method.
An experimental study is carried out to evaluate the performance of Lime mortar-Well graded Soil (Lime-WS) columns for the improvement of soft soils. Tests are conducted on a column of 100 mm diameter and 600 mm length surrounded by soft soil in different area ratios. Experiments are performed either with the entire area loading to evaluate the load - settlement behavior of treated grounds and only a column area loading to find the limiting axial stress of the column. A series of tests are carried out in soaking condition to investigate the influence of moisture content on the load - settlement behavior of specimens. In order to compare the behavior of Lime-WS columns with Conventional Stone (CS) columns as well as Geogrid Encased Stone (GES) columns, the behavior of these columns have been also considered in the present study. Remarkable improvement in the behavior of soft soil is observed due to the installation of Lime-WS columns and the performance of these columns is significantly enhanced by increasing the area ratio. The results show that CS columns are not suitable as a soil improvement technique for extremely soft soils and should be enhanced by encasing the column or replaced by rigid stone columns.
Adsorption is a major process causing the accumulation of arsenic onto soil. Therefore, further understanding of the adsorption/desorption characteristics of arsenic species on soil is essential for predicting their fate and preparing appropriate remediation strategy to remove arsenic from soil. In this study, the column adsorption/desorption experiment has been performed with As(III) and As(V) on soil. Experiment with As(III) was conducted under reducing condition, whereas that with As(V) was under oxidizing condition. Most of As(III) was remained on the oxidation state during the experiment. The results showed that the adsorption/desorption rate of As(III) was higher than that of As(V). Adsorption and desorption of arsenic species were not completely reversible in the column experiment. It was also found that As(V) in the column experiment was adsorbed more rapidly on soil than in the batch experiment.

The electrokinetic apparatus for remediation of the soil contaminated with Cs$^{+}$was designed. After kaolin clay was compulsorily contaminated by Cs$^{+}$ solution, the remediation characteristics by electrokinetic method were analyzed. After remediation experiment, the pH of the cathode side of the soil column was increased to 12.7 due to the generation of OH in cathode reservoir, but no hydroxide cesium form in the cathode side. Effluent rate from the cathode almost was constant and cesium concentration of effluent decreased with time passage. The 49% of a total of Cs$^{+}$ in the column was decontaminated for 0.4 day, the 72% of a total of Cs$^{+}$ in the column was decontaminated for 0.8 day, the 83% of a total of Cs$^{+}$ in the column was decontaminated for 1.2 days, the 89% of a total of Cs$^{+}$ in the column was decontaminated for 1.6 days, and the 93% of a total of Cs$^{+}$ in the column was decontaminated for 2.1 day Meanwhile, the predicted values of residual concentration by the developed model were quite similar to those obtained from experiments.m experiments.

Deep soil mixing with cement and cement-lime mixtures has been widely used for decades to improve the strength of soils. In this study, small-scale laboratory model tests of polymer columns in soft clayey soil were conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using various polymeric compounds as binders in deep soil mixing. Floating and end bearing polymer columns were used to examine the load-settlement relationship of improved soft clayey soils for various area replacement ratios. The results indicate that polymer columns show good promise for use in deep mixing applications.
