  • Acid sulfate soil (ASS) and potential acid sulfate soil (PASS) are distribution in worldwide and originate from sedimentary process, volcanic activity, or metamorphism and are problematic in agriculture and environmental due to their present and potential acidity developed by the oxidation. The PASS was defined as soil materials that had sulfidic layer more than 20 cm thick within 4 m of the soil profile and contained more than 0.15% of total-sulfur (T-S). A tentative interpretative soil classification system was proposed weak potential acid sulfate (T-S, 0.15-0.5%), moderate potential acid sulfate (T-S, 0.5-0.75%) and strong potential acid sulfate (T-S, more than 0.75%). PASS due to excess of pyrite over soil neutralizing capacity are formed. It provides no information on the kinetic rates of acid generation or neutralization; therefore, the test procedures used in acid base account (ABA) are referred to as static procedures. The net acid generation (NAG) test is a direct method to measure the ability of the sample to produce acid through sulfide oxidation and also provides and indication. The NAG test can evaluated easily whether the soils is PASS. The samples are mixed sandy loam and the PAS from the hydrothermal altered andesite (1:3, 1:8, 1:16, 1:20, 1:40, 1:80 and 1:200 ratios) in this study. We could find out that the NAG pH of the soil containing 0.75% of T-S was 2.5, and that of the soil has 0.15% of T-S was 3.8. NAG pH test can be proposed as soil classification criteria for the potential acid sulfate soils. The strong type has NAG pH of 2.5, the moderate one has NAG pH of 3.0, and the weak one has NAG pH of 3.5.

  • The The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual liquefaction occurrence site in Pohang area and to analyze the ground characteristics of Pohang area using the data of the National Geotechnical Information DB Center and to calculate the liquefaction potential index. Based on the results, the distribution of soil classification in Pohang area and the risk of liquefaction under various earthquake accelerations were prepared. As a result of the study, soils in Pohang has the soil characteristics that can cause the site amplification phenomenon. In the analysis through liquefaction hazard maps under earthquake scenarios, it is found that the liquefaction occurred in the area of Heunghae town is more likely to be liquefied than other areas in Pohang. From these results, it is expected that the study on the preparation of liquefaction hazard maps will contribute to the preparation of countermeasures against liquefaction by predicting the possibility in the future.

  • Torrefaction and hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) are productive methods to reclaim energy from lignocellulosic biomass. The hydrophobic, homogenized, energy dense and carbon rich solid fuel can be obtain from torrefaction and hydrothermal carbonization. Dead leaves were carbonized in a stainless steel reactor of volume 200 ml with torrefaction ($250-270^{\circ}C$) for 120 minutes and hydrothermal carbonization ($200-250^{\circ}C$) for 30 minutes, with mass yield solid fuel ranging from 57-70% and energy content from 16.81MJ/kg to 22.01 MJ/kg compare to the biomass. The char produced from torrefaction process possess high energy content than hydrothermal carbonization. The highest energy yield of 89.96% was obtained by torrefaction at $250^{\circ}C$. The energy densification ratio fluctuated in between 1.15 to 1.30. On the basis of pore size distribution of the chars, the definition of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) was used as a classification standard. The pore diameter was ranging within 11.09-19 nm which play important role in water holding capacity in soil. Larger pores can hold water and provide passage for small pores. Therefore, it can be concluded that high pore size char can be obtained my HTC process and high energy content char of 22.01 MJ/Kg with 34.04% increase in energy can be obtain by torrefaction process.

  • This is a study on the influence of percent retaining of No. 10 sieve on soil compaction. Reviewing the test values in part 1 and part 2, a relative equation to predict maximum dry density and optimum moisture content was induced. Results of the study are as follow; 1. Maximum dry density increases according as percent retatining of No. 10 sieve increase untill 40%, but it decreases in more than 50%. 2. Maximum dry density has the greatest value at 25%, also it decreases according to increase or decrease at 25% in percent passing of No. 200 sieve. 3. Grain size distribution that Maximum dry density is largest, is 40% in 4.76mm to 2.0mm, 35% in 2.0mm to 0.074mm, 25% in lese than 0.074mm. 4. Correlation betwesn Maximum dry density and optimum moisture content made a curved line. The deviation between maximum dry density to be predicted from optimum moisture content and test values, is less than about 5%. 5. Range of deviation between optimum moisture content to be predicted from classification area and uniformity coefficient isless than about 20%, which belongs to range of moisture content that is correspondent with 95% of maximum dry density, generally.

  • A pile is compressed with settlements when loading and bearing capacity is altered along relative displacement of pile/soil on settlement and compression. Settlements of pile displaying limit skin friction is different from displaying tip resistance. Therefore, it is an error in traditional method that bearing capacity of pile is estimated from the sum of limit skin fraction and tip resistance. Accordingly, development of design method considering behavior of load-settlement is needed. In this study, we would like to establish the base for development of design method considering bearing capacity altering along displacement on settlement and compression. For this, we established system and substance of design method. And in order to establish relationship of load-settlement of pile on the type of soil, we analyzed and arranged existing database and pile loading test. On design method, settlement is assumed gradually on each capacity level being assumed gradually. Bearing capacity developing on the pile is obtained on each settlement level. Until the obtained bearing capacity will be equal to assumed capacity, this process is continued with increasing settlement. Load-settlement curve for soil classification is sketched in the process computing settlement on assumed capacity. This design method will be materialized by computation program.

  • Soil moisture is a representative factor that plays a key role in hydrological cycle. It is involved in the interaction between atmosphere and land surface, and is used in fields such as agriculture and water resources. Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2), Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT), and European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative (ESACCI) data were used to analyze the applicability and uncertainty of satellite soil moisture product in the Korean peninsula. Cumulative distribution function (CDF) matching and triple collocation (TC) analysis were carried out to investigate uncertainty and correction of satellite soil moisture data. Comparisons of pre-calibration satellite soil moisture data with the Automated Agriculture Observing System (AAOS) indicated that ESACCI and ASCAT data reflect the trend of AAOS well. On the other hand, AMSR2 satellite data showed overestimated values during the freezing period. Correction of satellite soil moisture data using CDF matching improved the error and correlation compared to those before correction. Finally, uncertainty analysis of soil moisture was carried out using TC method. Clearly, the uncertainty of the satellite soil moisture, corrected by CDF matching, was diminished in both freezing and thawing periods. Overall, it is expected that using ASCAT and ESACCI rather than AMSR2 soil moisture data will give more accurate soil moisture information when correction is performed on the Korean peninsula.
