Mechanical Properties Variation of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy by Microstructural Control (α+β 타이타늄 합금의 미세조직 제어에 따른 기계적 특성)

  • The mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V can be improved by microstructural control through the heat treatment in ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ region. The heat treatment was carried out with a variety of heat treatment temperatures and holding times to find the optimized heat treatment conditions and it was analyzed by linking the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties. The part of ${\beta}$ phase with $10{\pm}2wt%$ vanadium was transformed into ${\alpha}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ martensite phase after quenched, so the hardness and tensile properties were decreased below $900^{\circ}C$. The higher the heat treatment temperature is, the smaller is the vanadium-rich region, which leads to transformation into hcp ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ martensite above $900^{\circ}C$. The hardness and tensile properties were improved due to the hard ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ martensite. As the holding times were longer, the hardness and tensile properties decreased below $900^{\circ}C$ because of the softening effect by the grain growth. When varying the holding times above $900^{\circ}C$, the change of mechanical properties was slight because the softening effect of grain growth and the strengthening effect of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ phase were counteractive. Therefore, the best conditions of heat treatment, which is in the range of $920{\sim}960^{\circ}C$, 40 min, WQ, can effectively improve the mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V.

Precise Flow Stress Analysis for the Occurrence of Dynamic Ferritic Transformation and Dynamic Recrystallization of Austenite in Low Carbon Steel (고온 변형 곡선을 이용한 동적 재결정 해석과 동적 상변태의 조기 예측)

  • There have been previous attempts to observe the occurrence of dynamic ferritic transformation at temperatures even above $Ae_3$ in a low-carbon steel, and not only in steels, but recently also in titanium alloys. In this study, a new approach is proposed that involves treating true stress-true strain curves in uniaxial compression tests at various temperatures, and different strain rates in 0.1C-6Ni steel, which is a model alloy used to decelerate the kinetics of ferrite transformation from austenite. The initial flow stress up to peak stress was used to analyze the change in dynamic softening phenomena, such as dynamic recovery, dynamic recrystallization, and dynamic transformation. It is worth mentioning that for predicting the occurrence of dynamic transformation, flow stress before reaching peak stress is much more sensitive to the change in the dynamic softening rate due to dynamic transformation, compared to peak stress. It was found that the occurrence of dynamic ferritic transformation could be successfully obtained even at temperatures above $Ae_3$ once the deformation condition was satisfied. This deformation condition is a function of both the strain rate and the deformation temperature, which can be described as the Zener - Hollomon parameter. In addition, the driving force of dynamic ferritic transformation might be much less than that of the dynamic recrystallization of austenite at a given deformation condition. By applying this technique, it is possible to predict the occurrence of dynamic transformation more sensitively compared with the previous analysis method using peak stress during deformation.

  • In seasonal frozen areas with climatic features, which have a temperature difference in the winter and thawing season, changes of mechanical properties of the soil in the zone could be seen between the freezing and thawing surface. In particular, in soil with many fine particles, a softening of the roadbed usually occurs from frost and thawing actions. The lower bearing capacity is a rapidly progressive the softening of roadbed, and occurred a mud-pumping by repeated loading. In this study, the three kind of sandy soil with contents of fine particles were conducted by directly shear box test with the number of cyclic in freeze-thawing and the water content of soil. Subsequently, the relationship between the shear strength and freeze-thaw cycling time was obtained. The shear strength was decreased with the increase of the freeze-thaw cycling time. A shear stress deterioration of the soil with power function modal is proposal.

The Effect of Pre-Heat Treatment Parameters on the Ion Nitriding of Tool Steel (금형공구강의 이온질화에 미치는 이전열처리 조건의 영향)

  • The effects of pre-heat treatment(Q/T) on microstructure and hardness of STD11 and STD61 tool steel nitrided by micro-pulse plasma were investigated. The quenching temperature for obtaining matrix hardness of STD11 and STD61 steel on range of HRC 50 to HRC 60 desired for machine parts is about $1070^{\circ}C$ and $1020^{\circ}C$ respectively. The hardness of STD11 and STD61 quenched at the temperature was HRC 63 and HRC 56 respectively. The nitrided case depth of STD11 and STD61 nitrided at $550^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours was independent of pre-heat treatment condition and the depth was approximately $100{\mu}m$. However, hardness and compactness of nitrided layer on Q/T treated specimen were higher than the annealed specimen. The case depth increased linearly with the increase of nitriding temperature, however, the hardness of nitrided layer decreased with the increase of temperature. Phase mixture of ${\gamma}-Fe_4N$ and ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}N$ was detected by XRD analysis in the nitrided layer formed at the optimum nitriding condition. The optimum nitriding temperature was approximately $490^{\circ}C$ which was $10^{\circ}C$ lower than the tempering temperature for preventing softening behavior of STD11 and STD61 matrix during nitriding process and the surface hardness of nitrided layer obtained by optimum pre-heat treatment condition was about Hv1400.

  • Thermomechanical pulping process uses large amounts of energy, mostly electricity to run electrical facilities. Thermomechanical pulp (TMP) made from Pinus densiflora also has a big drawback that refining consumes 90 per cent of the total energy used in TMP process. This study explored to draw up a way to save refining energy through different thermal treatment at the stages of presteaming and refining. Presteaming temperature was $80^{\circ}C$, $100^{\circ}C$, and $120^{\circ}C$. After presteaming at each temperature, refining was carried out at $100^{\circ}C$, $120^{\circ}C$, and $140^{\circ}C$ respectively. In a presteaming stage, steaming temperature over $120^{\circ}C$ greatly contributed to the decrease of refining energy leading to earlier attainment of a target freeness, irrespective of refining temperature. In addition, NaOH treatment with presteaming enhanced better development of fiber properties during refining than presteaming without NaOH. High temperature refining at $140^{\circ}C$ produced a high strength paper, and wood chips treated by alkali responded better to refining than at over $120^{\circ}C$. Improved softening effect on wood chips led to the decrease in shives contents but it gave no effect on pitch contents of TMP.

Effects of Process Conditions on the Color and Firmness of Salted Radish Root (Danmooji) at Model System (모델 시스템을 이용한 제조 조건이 단무지의 색도 및 경도에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of various seasoning components, pH of seasoning solution, heating time and storage temperature were investigated on the color and textural properties of the salted radish root (nanmooji) The effects of individual seasoning components in the salted radish root, additives of polyphosphate (AD3), citric acid (AD5), malic acid (AD2) delayed the color changes and softening more, compared to control soaked in water. On the other hand, additives of potassium sorbate (AD1), succinic acid (AD7), MSG (AD8), saccharin (AD6) accelerated the color changes and softening of the salted radish roots. The effects of pH of seasoning solution($X_1$), and heating time ($X_2$) were central composite design and response surface analysis. R- square represented dependent variables correlated independent variables ($X_1,\;X_2$), showed over 0.8 in the color and area value calculated thickness and firmness of salted radish root. Especially, R- square of 'b' represented 'yellow-green' was 0.899. And the result of crossing analysis of individual independent variables ($X_1,\;X_2$), showed that both independent variables had significant effects on the color and textural changes of the salted radish root. The salted radish root increased its color changes and softening, rapidly at $40^{\circ}C$, compared to the other storage temperatures at most storage periods.

  • Effect of high temperature soaking in salt solution and short time microwave heat treatment on quality of Korean pickled cucumbers during fermentation was investigated. The Korean pickled cucumbers were fermented at $25^{\circ}C$ for 10 days in 10% salt solution. The physicochemical properties measured were pH, the total acidity, hardness and the sensory properties of odor, taste and texture were also evaluated. The result showed that the effect of soaking cucumber in $80-90^{\circ}C$ hot salt solution significantly reduced the fermentation rate and softening rate of texture while a rather rapid fermentation was found for those soaked in $60-70^{\circ}C$. The effect of microwave treatment inhenced fermentation a little for short treatment but it was significantly reduced softening rate of texture by 3 minutes heating. The sensory evaluation of Korean pickled cucumber was found that heat treatments with hot solution and microwave heating had a possitive effect for reduction of softening of cucumber tissue, however odor and taste were not significantly affected.

The properties of AR(Alkali Resistant)-glass fiber by zirconia contents (지르코니아 함량에 따른 내알칼리 유리섬유의 특성)

  • Commercial AR(Alkali Resistant)-glass fiber has a good chemical resistant property, but also has a problem of difficulty in fiberizing process because of high viscosity in melted glass compare with E-glass fiber which is the most widely used for reinforced fiber of composite materials. In this study, we fabricated AR-glass fiber with low zirconia contents compare with commercial AR-glass fiber relatively, and measured properties against E-glass fiber. We obtained transparent clear glass with zirconia contents of 0.5~16 wt% by melting at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. These AR-glass samples had high visible transmittance of 89~90 %, softening temperature of $703{\sim}887^{\circ}C$. And softening temperatures of them were increased according to the increasing zirconia contents. Compare with E-glass, AR-glass contains 4 wt% zirconia has different value of $-94^{\circ}C$ in softening temperature, $+68^{\circ}C$ at Log3 temperature and $-13^{\circ}C$ at Log5 temperature in viscosity. We could verify good alkali resistant property of the AR-glass fiber with SEM after dipping in alkali solution for 48~72 hours, and also high tensile strength, 1.7 times compare with E-glass fiber at 48 hours and 2.2 times at 72 hours. We conclude that this AR-glass fiber can be widely used as general alkali resistant glass fiber because of easy manufacturing condition and good properties even though it has low zirconia contents.

Estimation of storability for Korean apples (Malus domestica) using Md-ACS1 and Md-ACO1 DNA marker (Md-ACS1 및 Md-ACO1 분자표지를 이용한 국내육성사과의 저장성 예측)

  • Apple (Malus domestica) is a climacteric fruit because of its high respiration and ethylene production. Ethylene affects the fruit by decreasing its quality and storability. Md-ACS1 and Md-ACO1 genes are involved in ethylene biosynthesis in apple; the Md-ACS1-2 and Md-ACO1-1 alleles are associated with low ethylene production. We conducted an analysis to study Md-ACS1 and Md-ACO1, and to examine ethylene production and softening rate of fruit at room temperature ($20^{\circ}C$) storage in 'Fuji (FJ)', 'Golden Supreme (GS)', and 5 cultivars of Korean apples ('RubyS (RS)', 'Hongro (HR)', 'Arisoo (AS)', 'Summer King (SK)', 'Greenball (GB)'). The result showed that an increase in the number of the alleles (ACS1-2, ACO1-1) decreased the ethylene production and softening rate. The presence of ACS1-1/1, ACO1-1/2 was confirmed in GS and the highest ethylene production and softening rate was observed. Ethylene production and softening rate of SK and GB expressing ACS1-1/2, ACO1-1/2 were higher than that of HR and AS, expressing ACS1-2/2, ACO1-1/2, but lower than GS. FJ with ACS1-2/2, ACO1-1/1 showed the lowest ethylene production and softening rate among all cultivars except RS. The Md-ACS1 and Md-ACO1 DNA markers could potentially be used to estimate storability and applied in marker assisted selection the improve the efficiency of apple breeding.

The quenching and tempering temperatures for obtaining matrix hardness of SCM435 steel on range of HRC30 to HRC40 desired for machine parts were about $860^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$ respectively. The case depth of SCM435 nitrided at $480^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours was independent of pre-heat treatment condition and was approximately $150{\mu}m$. However, hardness and compactness of nitrified layer on Q/T treated specimen were more heigher than annealed specimen. The case depth increased linearly with the increase of nitriding temperature, however, the hardness of nitrified layer decreased with the temperature. Phase mixture of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$-phase($Fe_4N$) and ${\varepsilon}$-phase($Fe_3N$) were detected by XRD analysis in the nitrified layer formed at optimum nitriding condition, and only single ${\gamma}^{\prime}$-phase was detected in the nitrified layer formed at higher nitriding temperature such as $540^{\circ}C$. The optimum nitriding temperature was approximately $480^{\circ}C$ which is lower than tempering temperature for preventing softening behavior of SCM435 matrix during nitriding process and the surface hardness of nitrified layer obtained by optimum preheat treatment condition was about Hv930.
