Assessment of compressive strength of high-performance concrete using soft computing approaches

  • The present study introduces an optimum performance soft computing model for predicting the compressive strength of high-performance concrete (HPC) by comparing models based on conventional (kernel-based, covariance function-based, and tree-based), advanced machine (least square support vector machine-LSSVM and minimax probability machine regressor-MPMR), and deep (artificial neural network-ANN) learning approaches using a common database for the first time. A compressive strength database, having results of 1030 concrete samples, has been compiled from the literature and preprocessed. For the purpose of training, testing, and validation of soft computing models, 803, 101, and 101 data points have been selected arbitrarily from preprocessed data points, i.e., 1005. Thirteen performance metrics, including three new metrics, i.e., a20-index, index of agreement, and index of scatter, have been implemented for each model. The performance comparison reveals that the SVM (kernel-based), ET (tree-based), MPMR (advanced), and ANN (deep) models have achieved higher performance in predicting the compressive strength of HPC. From the overall analysis of performance, accuracy, Taylor plot, accuracy metric, regression error characteristics curve, Anderson-Darling, Wilcoxon, Uncertainty, and reliability, it has been observed that model CS4 based on the ensemble tree has been recognized as an optimum performance model with higher performance, i.e., a correlation coefficient of 0.9352, root mean square error of 5.76 MPa, and mean absolute error of 4.1069 MPa. The present study also reveals that multicollinearity affects the prediction accuracy of Gaussian process regression, decision tree, multilinear regression, and adaptive boosting regressor models, novel research in compressive strength prediction of HPC. The cosine sensitivity analysis reveals that the prediction of compressive strength of HPC is highly affected by cement content, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, and water content.

  • Recent paradigm in technology shifts from object-based technology to environment-based technology. Issue here is interaction among human, machines, and environment. This requires new interpretations for the space among them. Holistic interactions based on “Mom (embodiment)” suggest a good starting point for this endeavor. The past, present, future of technology are presented in terms of technology’s fundamental virtue: “humanizing technology” or “technology serving human.” Interactive technology initiative (ITI) is an interdisciplinary research group to search for the proper technology and the proper way of implementing technology: “interactive technology” or “soft engineering.” Some experimental activities conducted by ITI are presented in this organized session, “Interactive Technology.” Metatechnology, soft engineering, “Mom (embodiment),” holistic interactions, tangible space, and ubiquitous computing are key concepts in interactive technology.

  • 클라이언트/서버 기반 방식의 컨텐츠 전송 시스템은 서버로 작업요청이 많아질 경우에는 서버에 처리부하가 집중되는 병목현상으로 인하여 시스템이 마비 되는 취약점을 가지고 있다. 그러나 인터넷 사용자의 폭발적인 증가와 컨텐츠 품질 향상 요구로 인하여 서버의 증설만으로는 한계에 이르렀다. 그러므로 이러한 문제점들을 개선하기 위해 P2P 기반 컴퓨팅방식을 사용한다. 본 논문에서는 컴퓨팅 자원의 공유를 목적으로 하는 P2P 컴퓨팅 환경에서 유휴 컴퓨팅 자원을 이용하여 교육 콘텐츠 전송 시스템을 설계하고 구현한다. 제안된 시스템은 인터넷 전송뿐만 아니라 위성 채널을 통해 콘텐츠를 전송할 수 있도록 시스템을 구현하고, 실시간 강의와 비실시간 강의의 콘텐츠를 모두 전송하도록 설계한다.

Autonomous Optical Thinking Machine Dealing with Impression of Pictures

  • An optical system which can autonomously form and display an impression of a picture made up by many figures has been developed. This system consists of optical fuzzy-neurons which calculate the correlation between the input picture and the reference image by incoherent optics. The calculated signal is applied to an amplifier whereby the output signal increases, then decreases according to increase of the input signal . These outputs are synthesized, and are used for changing the position where the system gaze on a part of the input picture by light beam. In this system, the light intensity used for gazing changes chaotically, The attractor drawn from the change of light intensity corresponds to the impression of the picture. This paper shows the results that are calculated by the numerical simulation. The system has been simulated to express the impression for a picture formed by 4figures.

  • The forthcoming century will be the "era of cyber society" . In a virtual environment, a cyber character plays the role of an agent for the human being. In this paper, we introduce active researches of industries, universities, and research institutes in Korea. After Adam Soft Inc. presented a cyber singer,“Adam”, a few cyber characters have succeeded commercially through Internet, TV, CF, movies and etc. Some universities had their own characters to make fundamental researches in the fields of modeling, motion control, and VR. Research institutes have been funded recently to a cyber character related researches. This paper briefly reviews the recent research works, and future trends in Korea. in Korea.

Computing and Reducing Transient Error Propagation in Registers

  • Recent research indicates that transient errors will increasingly become a critical concern in microprocessor design. As embedded processors are widely used in reliability-critical or noisy environments, it is necessary to develop cost-effective fault-tolerant techniques to protect processors against transient errors. The register file is one of the critical components that can significantly affect microprocessor system reliability, since registers are typically accessed very frequently, and transient errors in registers can be easily propagated to functional units or the memory system, leading to silent data error (SDC) or system crash. This paper focuses on investigating the impact of register file soft errors on system reliability and developing cost-effective techniques to improve the register file immunity to soft errors. This paper proposes the register vulnerability factor (RVF) concept to characterize the probability that register transient errors can escape the register file and thus potentially affect system reliability. We propose an approach to compute the RVF based on register access patterns. In this paper, we also propose two compiler-directed techniques and a hybrid approach to improve register file reliability cost-effectively by lowering the RVF value. Our experiments indicate that on average, RVF can be reduced to 9.1% and 9.5% by the hyperblock-based instruction re-scheduling and the reliability-oriented register assignment respectively, which can potentially lower the reliability cost significantly, without sacrificing the register value integrity.

소프트 컴퓨팅에 의한 지능형 자동변속 시스템 (Intelligent Automatic Transmission System Using Soft Computing)

  • 결정된 변속선도에 의한 자동변속 패턴은 운전자에게 편리한 변속을 제공한다. 하지만, 운전자의 운전 성향이 개인마다 다양함으로 고정된 변속선도를 여러 운전자에게 동일하게 제공하늘 것은 불만의 요소로 인식되고 있다. 이에, 본 논문에서는 운전자의 성향을 결정할 수 있는 입력을 이용한 학습 모듈을 설계하여 운전 성향을 판단하고자 한다. 판단된 운전 성향을 이용하여 변속선도를 조정함으로써 운전자의 의지에 부합되는 변속패턴을 제공하고자 한다. 실제 주행시 얻은 데이터를 이용하여 제안된 모듈의 성능의 우수함을 보인다.

Soft computing techniques in prediction Cr(VI) removal efficiency of polymer inclusion membranes

  • In this study soft computing techniques including, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) were investigated for the prediction of Cr(VI) transport efficiency by novel Polymer Inclusion Membranes (PIMs). Transport experiments carried out by varying parameters such as time, film thickness, carrier type, carier rate, plasticizer type, and plasticizer rate. The predictive performance of ANN and ANFIS model was evaluated by using statistical performance criteria such as Root Mean Standard Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Coefficient of Determination (R2). Moreover, Sensitivity Analysis (SA) was carried out to investigate the effect of each input on PIMs Cr(VI) removal efficiency. The proposed ANN model presented reliable and valid results, followed by ANFIS model results. RMSE and MAE values were 0.00556, 0.00163 for ANN and 0.00924, 0.00493 for ANFIS model in the prediction of Cr(VI) removal efficiency on testing data sets. The R2 values were 0.973 and 0.867 on testing data sets by ANN and ANFIS, respectively. Results show that the ANN-based prediction model performed better than ANFIS. SA demonstrated that time; film thickness; carrier type and plasticizer type are major operating parameters having 33.61%, 26.85%, 21.07% and 8.917% contribution, respectively.
