Objectives : In spinal metastasis and myeloma, percutaneous vertebroplasty could be an effective treatment method to provide spinal stabilization and to relief pain for early rehabilitation. The authors report twenty-five cases the clinical results of percutaneous vertebroplasty for twenty-five cases of spinal metastasis and myeloma. Materials and Methods : From September 1998 to December 1999, seventy percutaneous vertebroplasties(PVP) were performed for spinal metastases and myeloma in 25 patients, sixteen women and nine men ranging in age from 34 to 74. The primary malignancies were 6 multiple myelomas, and in metastatic tumore from various origin. All patients complained of severe pain and had osteolytic vertebral body destructions without spinal cord compression. To evaluate clinical improvement, suObjective verbal analogue pain score(VAS) and Karnofsky performance scale(KPS) were used. Thin sliced(2mm-thickness) sectional computed tomography(CT) was performed before and after PVP. Plain X-ray film was followed up every 1 month to assess the vertebral column stability. Results : In 25 patients, a total of seventy PVPS were performed successfully : 6 cervical, 33 thoracic and 31 lumbar vertebrae. Most patients had clear improvement of pain after PVP ; mean as score was 8.1 and 2.9 before and after PVP, respectively. Improvement was maintained in most patients. No further collapse of treated vertebrae was observed(mean follow-up, 7 months). Leakage of PMMA was notod in the spinal canal(13 levels), neural foramen (2 levels), adjacent disk(15 levels), paravertebral soft tissue(14 levels) and vein(8 levels). Pulmonary embolism was detected in three patients after the procedure, but was not associated with clinical symptoms. Conclusion : These results indicate that percutaneous vertebroplasty can be valuable treatment method in osteolytic spinal metastasis and myeloma, providing immediate pain relief and spinal stabilization and contributing to early rehabilitation.
Purpose: Prior to closure of the epiphysis of the distal phalanx, fracture usually occurs through the growth plate, Salter-Harris type I or II, or through the juxtaepiphyseal region 1 to 2 mm distal to the growth plate. The terminal tendon of extensor inserts into the epiphysis only, while insertion site of the flexor digitorum profundus spans both the epiphysis and metaphysis. Because of the difference between these tendon insertions, this injury mimics a mallet deformity. But, this type of injury does not involve a tear or avulsion of the extensor, unlike mallet finger of adults. Seymour was the first to describe this type of injury in children and called after his name, Seymour's fracture. This fracture is prone to infection or remain the residual deformity unless adequate treatment. Methods: We report a case of Seymour's fracture. A 9-year-old boy presented a laceration of the nail matrix, with the nail lies degloved from the nail fold on the right middle finger gotten from an impact against a door. An X-ray examination showed the fracture line lying 1 mm distal to the growth plate. The injury was treated with debridement and the fracture was reduced by applying hyperextension force. Under the C-arm, a single 0.7 mm K-wire was used to immobilize the distal interphalangeal joint. Intravenous antibiotics were applied for 5 days after surgery. Results: The K-wire was removed in the 3rd week. No infection or significant deformity was found until follow-up of 12 months. Conclusions: Seymour's fracture may be at first classically mallet deformity by its appearance. But it is anatomically different and more problematic injury. If it isn't corrected at the time of injury, derangement of the extensor mechanism, and growth deformity of the distal phalanx may occur. The fracture site should be debrided, removed of any interposed soft tissue, and the patient should be given appropriate antibiotics. Reduction should be maintained by K-wire fixation. We experienced no infection or premature epiphyseal closure.
This report deals with the sedimentological study of the littoral sand of beaches in the Busan area. The purpose of this report is to know the grain size, mineralogical composition, heavy mineral and clay mineral of the beach sands, and gravity measurements of the Nagdong River Deltas. 1) As a whole, the littoral sand of the beaches are composed of uniformly medium grained, moderately sorted and nearly symmetrical. The barrier sand of the Nagdong Estuary is composed of fine grained, well sorted and nearly symmetrical. 2) The littoral sand of the beaches is transported by saltation and rolling. The barrier sand of the Nagdong Estuary is transported by suspension and saltation. 3) In the littoral sand of the beaches, the ratio of feldspar to quartz is 1 :2.31 and in the barrier sand of the Nagdong Estuary 1:1.40. 4) The content of heavy mineral of samples ranges from 0.54 to 3.87 %. The principal heavy minerals are hornblende, pyroxene, epidote, garnet, leucoxene, zircon, apatite, magnetite, hematite and ilmenite with minor accessories of rutile and olivine. 5) The x-ray diffraction analysis of the clay mineral informs the existence of quartz, feldspar, kaolinite and montmorillonite. The montmorillonite is considered to have been derived from the alteration of acidic volcanic rocks. 6) To determine the depositional structure of the Nagdong Estuary, Gravity measurements were made. Free air anomaly ranges from 14.5 mgal to 33.5 mgal and Bouguer anomaly ranges from 14.3 to 23.5 mgal and both are closely related to the topography. According to the interpreted layer structure, the upper layer composing sand, silt and clay, the intermediate layer composing sand with gravel, the lower layer composing weathered and soft rock, and bed rock composing hornfels or andesite. 7) The depositional environments of the study, the littoral area is dominated by the marine environment and the Nagdong Estuary by the mixed environment.

This study investigated the effects of Fe-soy proteinate (Fe-SP) and magnesium oxide (MgO) dietary supplements on eggshell quality in laying hens. A total of 800 26-wk-old Hy-Line Brown hens were assigned to four dietary treatments: control (C), Fe-SP 100 (100 ppm Fe-soy proteinate), MgO (3 g MgO/kg diet), and Fe-SP 100+MgO. Each treatment had five replicates of 40 hens. The FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared) and XRD (X-ray diffraction) spectra of Fe-soy proteinate were different from those of $FeSO_4$ and soy digest. There were no significant differences among treatments in hen-day egg production, hen-house egg production, broken and soft egg rate, feed intake, or feed conversion. The MgO and Fe-SP 100+MgO treatments showed significantly (p<0.05) higher egg weights than the control group. Eggshell strength and thickness were significantly (p<0.05) higher in the MgO supplemented groups. The lightness and yellowness of the eggshells decreased, and the redness increased significantly in the Fe-SP treated groups. There were no significant differences among treatments in leukocyte level, but hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations were higher with Fe-SP treatments. In conclusion, supplementation with Fe-SP significantly affects eggshell color and hemoglobin concentration, whereas MgO supplementation increases eggshell strength and thickness. Egg weight and egg shell quality can be improved by supplementation of 100 ppm Fe in the form of Fe-SP and 3 g MgO/kg diet.
The phase transition behavior isothermal micro-phase separation kinetics of polyester-based thermoplastic elastomer were studied using the synchrotron X-ray scattering(SAXS) method. The structural changes occurring during heating period were investigated by determining the changes of the one-dimensional correlation function, interfacial thickness and Porod constant. Based on the abrupt increases of the domain spacing and interfacial thickness, a major structural change occurring well below the melting transition temperature is suggested. Those changes are explained in terms of melting of the thermodynamically unstable hard domains or/and the interdiffusion of the hard and soft segments in the interfacial regions. SAXS profile changes during the micro-phase separation process were also clearly observed at various temperatures and the separation rate was found to be sensitively affected by the temperature. The peak position of maximum scattering intensity stayed constant during the entire course of the phase separation process. The scattering data during the isothermal phase separation process was interpreted with the Cahn-Hilliard diffusion equation. The experimental data obtained during the early stage of the phase separation seems to satisfy the Cahn-Hilliard spinodal mechanism. The transition temperature obtained from the extrapolation of the diffusion coefficient to zero value turned out to be about 147$\pm$$2^{\circ}$, which is close to the order-disorder transition temperature obtained from the Porod analysis. The transition temperature was also estimated from the inveriant growth rate. By extrapolating the inveriant growth rate to zero, a transition temperature of about 145$\pm$$\pm$$2^{\circ}$ was obtained.
We have evaluated the clinical results following the 46 cases of free vascularized osteocutaneous fibular flap transfer to the tibial defect combined with skin and soft tissue defect, which were performed from May 1982 to January 1997. Regarding to the operation, flap size, length of the grafted fibula, anastomosed vessels, ischemic time of the flap and total operation time were measured. After the operation, time to union of grafted fibula and the amount of hypertrophy of grafted fibula were periodically measured through the serial X-ray follow-up and also the complications and results of treatment were evaluated. In the 46 consecutive procedures of free vascularized osteocutaneous fibular flap transfer, initial bony union were obtained in the 43 grafted fibulas at average 3.75 months after the operation. There were 2 cases in delayed unions and 1 in nonunion. 44 cutaneous flaps among the 46 cases were survived but 2 cases were necrotized due to deep infection and venous insufficiency. One necrotized flap was treated with latissimus dorsi free flap transfer and the other was treated with soleus muscle rotational flap. Grafted fibulas have been hypertrophied during the follow-up periods. The fracture of grafted fibula(15 cases) was the most common complication and occurred at average 9.7 months after the operation. The fractured fibulas were treated with the cast immobilization or internal fixation with conventional cancellous bone graft. In the cases of tibia and fibula fracture at recipient site, the initial rigid fixation for the fibula fracture at recipient site could prevent the fracture of grafted fibula to the tibia.

In this study, nanocrystalline ferrite powders with the composition $Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4$ were prepared by the autocombustion method. The obtained powders were sintered at $800^{\circ}C$, $900^{\circ}C$ and $1,000^{\circ}C$ for 4 h in air atmosphere. The as-prepared and the sintered powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and magnetization studies. An increase in the crystallite size and a slight decrease in the lattice constant with sintering temperature were observed, whereas microstrain was observed to be negative for all the samples. Two significant absorption bands in the wave number range of the $400cm^{-1}$ to $600cm^{-1}$ have been observed in the FT-IR spectra for all samples which is the distinctive feature of the spinel ferrites. The force constants were found to vary with sintering temperature, suggesting a cation redistribution and modification in the unit cell of the spinel. The M-H loops indicate smaller coercivity, which is the typical nature of the soft ferrites. The observed variation in the saturation magnetization and coercivity with sintering temperature has been attributed to the role of surface, inhomogeneous cation distribution, and increase in the crystallite size.
The chemical property analysis on the deposited clay using scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer were performed. Also, the triaxial compression tests and consolidation tests using NaCl aqueous solution and leachate as substitute pore (or saturated) water in samples were carried out to find out the behaviour characteristics of strength and deformation of contaminated deposited clay. from the chemical composition analysis results of clay samples, the magnitudes of composition ratio were revealed in the order of O, C, Si, Al, and Fe. Of these, why the ratio of carbon appeared to be large is estimated as due to the increase of the phyto-planktons after the construction of tide embankment. In the triaxial compression test and consolidation test results, the shear strength and compression properties have increased with the increase in concentration of contaminant (NaCl). This phenomenon is considered as to be caused by the changes of soil structure to flocculent structure owing to the decrease in the thickness of diffuse double layer in proportion to increase in the concentration of electrolyte.

The extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation, whose wavelength is from 120 nm down to 10 nm, and the energy from 10 eV up to 124 eV, is widely utilized such as in photoelectron spectroscopy, solar imaging, especially in lithography and soft x-ray microscopy. In this study, we have investigated the plasma diagnostics as well as the debris characteristics between the two types of dense plasma focusing devices with coaxial electrodes of Mather and hypocycloidal pinch (HCP), respectively. The EUV emission intensity, electron temperature and plasma density have been investigated in these cylindrical focused plasma along with the debris characteristics. An input voltage of 5 kV has been applied to the capacitor bank of 1.53 uF and the diode chamber has been filled with Ar gas at pressure ranged from 1 mTorr and 180 mTorr. The inner surface of the cathode was covered by polyacetal insulator. The central anode electrode has been made of tin. The wavelength of the EUV emission has been measured to be in the range of 6~16 nm by a photo-detector (AXUV-100 Zr/C, IRD). The visible emission has also been measured by the spectrometer with the wavelength range of 200~1,100 nm. The electron temperature and plasma density have been measured by the Boltzmann plot and Stark broadening methods, respectively, under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE).

As an efficient controlled release system for rhBMP-2, a functional nanoparticle-hydrogel complex, incorporated with matrix metalloproteinase(MMP) sensitive peptide cross-linker, was developed and used as a bone transplant. In vivo bone formation was evaluated by soft x-ray, histology, alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity and mineral contents analysis, based on the rat calvarial critical size defect(8mm in diameter) model. Significantly, effective bone regeneration was achieved with the rhBMP-2 loaded MMP sensitive hyaluronic acid(HA) based hydrogel-Nanoparticles(NP) complex, as compared to only MMP HA, the MMP HA-NP without rhBMP-2, or even with the rhBMP-2. These improvements included the formation pattern of bone and functional marrow, the degree of calcium quantification, and the ALP activity. These results indicate that the MMP sensitive HA with nano-particle complex can be a promising candidate for a new bone defect replacement matrix, and an enhanced rhBMP-2 scaffold.
