The microbial contamination rate of contact lens cases in multi-purpose solution(MPS) care systems of 80 asymptomatic soft contact lens wearers was investigated. In caring for their lenses 72 patients (90%) used chemical disinfection(include MPS), six patients(7%) used hydrogen peroxide, and two patients(3%) used heat. Fifty-nine percent of patients used MPS in their care systems. Of 80 contact lens cases, contamination was found in 68%(54) of cases. There is a significant relationship between the ages of lens cases and contamination: older cases being more frequently contaminated. Of the contaminated 31 lens cases(57%) in MPS care systems, four contact lens cases(13%) were contaminated by single organism, 15 cases(48%) by two kinds of organisms, and 12 cases(39%) by more than three kinds of organisms. Of the organisms that were contaminated lens cases, Pseudomonas. Serratia, Bacillus, E. coli and Aspergillus were frequently isolated. When considering the high contamination rate of soft contact lens cases in MPS care systems more effective and hygienical lens care system is important, especially frequent and regular disposal of lens cases may prove to prevent the build-up of microbial colonisation in containers.

Purpose: Polymerization of HEMA(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) which can be used in the soft contact lens has been performed by using electron beam(EB) irradiation, and examined the best condition for the polymerization. Comparing the physical properties of the contact lenses to the one fabricated by thermal polymerization method, we check the use possibility of the EB irradiation to the fabrication of the soft contact lens. Methods: We investigated the degree of polymerization of the HEMA according to the composition of the monomer, the additive ratio and the dose of electron beam (0~120 kGy). The degree of polymerization was measured depending on the EB dose to research the best synthetic condition under the EB irradiation. The physical properties of the contact lens such as water content(%), oxygen transmissibility(Dk/t) and optical transmittance were analysed by using the FT-IR results with comparing the two different polymerization method (thermal and electron beam polymerization) with same additive ratio. Results: When the dose of electron beam was above 100 kGy, the degree of polymerization of HEMA was above 99% with regardless using cross-linker and initiator. The water content of the lens fabricated by EB method showed 10% higher than the one by the thermal method which was 40%. The lens fabricated by EB method also showed higher oxygen transmissibility(Dk/t) as same with the water content, and showed twice higher value in the lens fabricated by pure HEMA. According to the FT-IR results, hydrophilic property of the lens fabricated by EB method was increased due to increasing the intermolecular hydrogen bonding. It showed above 90% optical transmittance in the visible range of wavelength on the contact lenses fabricated by the both of two different polymerization method. Conclusions: The polymerization of HEMA without cross-linker and initiator was successful above 100 kGy of EB irradiation. Moreover the lens fabricated from the polymer synthesized by pure HEMA with 100 kGy of EB showed the highest water content and oxygen transmissibility. Therefore EB irradiation is another possible method to synthesize the polymer which can be used for the soft contact lens.
Purpose: This study was to compare the habitual soft contact lens wear to recommended wearing schedule for subjects and suggest a clinical guideline for prescribing contact lens. Methods: 611 adults (39 men and 572 women) with contact lens experience took part in this study. The survey collected information about current wearing schedule (hours/day and days/week), types of lenses worn and awareness of recommended wear schedule. Results: The subjects wore the daily contact lens for $7.97{\pm}3.60$ hours/day in average. Of these, 247 subjects (40.4%) exceeded the recommended wear schedule and 36 (5.9%) wore for over 15 hours. It turned out that subjects with 3-month extended contact lenses and the ones with the conventional daily wear wore for $9.79{\pm}2.68$ hours and $8.98{\pm}3.30$ hours/day, respectively. For subjects wearing contact lenses longer than five days/week it tended to wear for over 9 hours. Those who were aware of the wear schedule were 293 (48.0%), and those not were 318 (52.0%). 56.7% of subjects who were aware of the wear schedule respected the recommendation whereas only 22.3% of those unaware of it were found to respect it. The possibility to respect the wear schedule was 4.55 times higher when wearers were aware of it. Conclusions: Korean office workers wearing contact lenses wore for $7.97{\pm}3.60$ hours/day. 247 (40.4%) of subjects wore contact lens longer than recommended wear schedule. This implies that it will need to educate contact lens wearer about recommended wear schedule and advice for the long time wearer.

Purpose: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of corneal eccentricity and shape on the rotational pattern of toric soft lens by the postural change of lens wearers. Methods: The corneal eccentricity of 41 eyes (aged 20s) having -1.0 D with-the-rule corneal astigmatism (WRCA) was measured, and then toric soft lenses were fitted with the amount of total astigmatism. In lying and straight postures, the rotation of toric soft lenses was recorded by a camera attached to slitlamp and analyzed. Results: Most toric soft lens designed with accelerated stabilization rotated to the temporal direction, which was the lying position direction, regardless of corneal eccentricity, and some lenses rotated to the nasal direction for high corneal eccentricity and corneal type of asymmetric bowtie. There was no correlation between the amount of rotation and corneal eccentricity right after of contact lens wearing in straight and lying posture, however, the amount of rotation was the greater for the cornea with the higher eccentricity after the subjects laying down for some period. The speed of lens rotation started to decrease after the subjects laying down, but the speed was not different according to corneal eccentricity difference. The amount of lens rotation for symmetric and asymmetric bowtie-typed corneas increased more than it for oval-typed cornea, and it was same even with time elapsing. The speed of lens rotation in lying posture was the slowest in asymmetric bowtie-typed cornea compared with other corneal types. Conclusions: From the present study, it was revealed that the rotational pattern of toric soft lens was affected by corneal eccentricity and corneal shape when the wearer's posture changed. Thus, it should be considered for the development of the fitting guideline and the design of toric soft lens.
Purpose: To develop more accurate wet measuring system combining the wet cell, automatic lensmeter and the related software for hydrophilic contact lenses and to verify the accuracy of those measuring holder system already available in the market. Methods: Refractive power measurement were done in both a conventional method which has been commonly used in optical shops and a new method which is recently developed in korea. Hydrophilic contact lens of korean brand was chosen as a test material and was tested by water content ratio and by spherical refractive power. Results: When spherical power of -3.00 D contact lens is measured in the newly developed wet cell measurement holder with automatic lensmeter, it reads -3.01 D at water content ratio of 38%. -3.00 D at 45% and -2.98 D at 58%. The same experiment with the Poster soft contact lens wet cell measurement holder maintaining other conditions same resulted in -3.60 D at the water content ratio of 38%, -3.06 D at 45% and -2.46 D at 58%. Conclusions: At the higher water content, the refractive power values measured by both of the wet cell measuring holders are shown lower, and additionally, the new method using the wet cell holder and new software program in a automatic lensmeter showed more accurate readings than conventional Poster soft contact lens wet cell measuring system.

This study was performed to compare the relationship between contact lens wearer and dry-eye patient. In this study, TBUT, SIT, TTT, Rose bengal staining and McMonnies dry eye symptom questionnaire were performed as a baseline. With the base data, the subjects were classified to 3 groups : 3S patients who have dry eye signs and symptoms, 38 patients who are wearing soft contact tenses, 35 subjects who have health eyes and never worn on a contact lenses as control subjects. Contact lens wearers were divided into 3 groups according to the duration of contact lens wear. There were no significant differences in TBUT, STT, TTT, Rose-bengal staining and McMonnies dry eye symptom questionnaire result between contact lens wearer group and dry eye patients group. We suggest that there are similarities in tear function tests between the dry-eye patient and the contact lens wearer.
Purpose: The functional ophthalmic lenses containing fluorine-substituted aniline group (2,4-difluoroaniline, 2,6-difluoroaniline, 3,4-difluoroaniline) were manufactured and the physical and optical characteristics of copolymerized ophthalmic lens were investigated. Methods: HEMA (2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate), NVP (N-vinyl pyrrolidone), MA (methacrylic acid), the cross-linker EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) and the initiator AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) were used as a basic combination and fluorine-substituted aniline group (2,4-difluoroaniline, 2,6-difluoroaniline, 3,4-difluoroaniline) were used as additives for preparing the hydrogel soft contact lenses. The hydrogel ophthalmic lens was manufactured by cast mould method and the ophthalmic lenses were stored in a 0.9% NaCl normal saline for 24 hrs. Results: The optical transmittance of the sample with addition 2,4-difluoroaniline showed that the UV-B(9.8~51.4%), UV-A(58.8~79.2%) and visible transmittance(87.0~90.4%). In the case of 2,6-difluoroaniline were measured the UV-B(80.2~83.2%), UV-A(85.8~86.4%), and visible transmittance(90.8~91.4%). Also, the optical transmittance of ophthalmic lens containing 3,4-difluoroaniline were measured the UV-B transmittance of 3.8~30.4%, UV-A transmittance of 47.8%~74.4% and the visible transmittance of 86.2~91.0% respectively. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, 2,4-difluoroaniline and 3,4-difluoroaniline can be used effectively as additive for UV-blocking ophthalmic contact lenses.
Purpose: This study was performed to achieve an acceptable piggyback fit utilizing each subject's own GP lenses, in subjects with regular low myopic astigmatism. Methods: A randomized, prospective study of 15 subjects with the diagnosis of low myopic astigmatism was conducted. Nine subjects were female and 6 were male, and mean age was: 23.73${\pm}$1.68 years. Subjects were evaluated before participate on this study and then also evaluated with period of at two hours and two weeks after obtaining their lenses. All subjects were submitted to the following tests: measurement of comfort level by means of the analogical visual scale, best corrected visual acuity and over-refraction at distance. contrast sensitivity and stereo acuity. After evaluating the fit of plano soft lens, we applied each subject's own GP lens on top. Results: Vision, visual performance and satisfaction of piggyback contact lens system were stable, if not improved, for the 15 subjects when the data was compared to the patients' wear of rigid gas permeable contact lenses. Fit with a piggyback system had the same or improved comfort, visual acuity and contrast sensitivity compared to previous GP lens wear alone. The visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and stereo acuity did not show differences in relation to the studied lens type. Conclusions: These results suggest that it is possible to achieve a successful piggyback lens fitting utilizing a patient's own GP lens. The piggyback lens system satisfied the visual performance and visual requirements of this subject with GP lens alone for the correction of low myopic astigmatism.
We investigated the change of the blink rate by wearing soft contact lens(SCL). Eight types of soft contact lenses were worn by twelve asymptomatic contact lens wearers. When wearers were worn SCLs for 15 min, the average blink rate was 20.0 blinks/min, which was a statistically significant increase compared to 13.3 blinks/min, the average blink rate of non-SCL-worn eye. After 8 hr of lens wear, the average blink rate was 24.3 blinks/min, and it was 11 blinks/min more than that of non-SCL-worn eye and 4 blinks/min more than that of 15 min SCL-worn eye. There were a little difference of the blink rate in types of lens, which the blink rate range of all lens after 15 min of lens wear was 18.1~20.9 blinks/min and that after 8 hr of lens wear was 22.9~24.9 blinks/min. When wearing A lens(vifilcon, 0.06 mm) having thin center thickness, wearers showing difference of 10.0~11.9 blinks/min between non-SCL-worn eye and 15 min SCL-worn eye reached 16.7% and it was more than that of relatively thick B lens(0.17 mm) and C lens(0.14 mm). This result suggest that the center thickness was not unique factor of the blink rate change and other factors would have synthetically influence on the blink rate change. In the case of B lens and C lens of hilafilcon material but having different center thickness and water content, wearers increasing more than 4.0 blinks/min after 8 hr of lens wear was 58.3% and 41.7%, respectively. This result have provided information that the lenses of similar materials but different center thickness and water content could cause individually the different change of the blink rate.
The purpose of this study is to get related appropriate data for correct awareness and education of the university students who are using contact lens by investigating university students' awareness, present status, using habits and complication of contact lens. The method of survey was made by questionnaires which were spread to the group of 408 university students. The result indicated some characteristics including using daily wear soft lens of 55.7%, the major motive of using them is for cosmetics of 45.6%. Among them, 54.9% experienced complication, and the xerophthalmia was the most conspicuous case in the aspect of the kinds of the complication. In the aspect of the place where they purchased the contact lens, 93% of the users bought them at eye glasses stores. But when they experienced inconveniences of the contact lens, only 18.8% consulted the Stores. In the fact, I think, the users don't seem to trust the stores fully. Furthermore, 43.5% endure the inconveniences when they get them without any treatment. The fact indicates that they don't realize the seriousness of the complication due to contact lens. Reviewing above-stated facts, information and education for correct awareness and managing methods of contact lens, the complication seem 10 be required. In addition, optician specialized knowledge on contact lens and the sense of duty on national eye health improvement seem to be required.
