  • We tested the effect of sodium tungstate, which disturbs the molybdenum cofactor formation, on the activities of aldehyde oxidase(AO) and the growth of maize(Zea mays) primary roots. As reported in other plants, sodium tungstate inhibited AO also in the maize root concentration-dependently. The inhibitory effect of sodium tungstate was observed only when the inhibitor was applied to the living plants. Application of tungstate to the extracted protein did not show any effect. Western analysis revealed slightly decreased level of AO protein in the presence of tungstate, indicating a positive feedback of gene regulation by the product. We also tested the effects of tungstate on the root growth. The elongation of primary root and the development of lateral roots, which are sensitive to the absolute level of auxin, were decreased in the presence of sodium tungstate. However, the gravitropic curvature of the primary root, which is dependent on the relative amount of auxin at both sides, was unaffected. These data suggested the decrease of auxin biosynthesis by the application of tungstate. However, the level of free IAA was unaffected by tungstate application. We discuss the possible explanations for the observed results.

  • Effects of bath composition on electroless deposition of Ni-W-B from sulphate solution were invesrigated in terms of deposition kinetics, electro resistivity and composition of deposit film. The microstruigated and crystataine structure of the films were also studied using a scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer. The deposition rate increased linearly with increasing the concentration of nickel sulphate in bath solution, wheras the rate decreasing with sodium citrate. The rate was also affected by sodium tungstate, which was maaximum at the concentration of 0.06 M/1 in sodium tungstate, The content of W in the deposit increased with increased with increasing the sodium citrate had on opposite effect on the composition of W and B in the deposit. The crystal change film from armorphous to cryatallicne nature by heat treatments was proved by the reduction of specific resistance and X-ray diffration.

  • The elution behaviour of molybdate and tungstate through anion exchange column has been studied at the various pH. A discussion is made to evaluate the equilibrium constants of the polymerization of these acids comparing with the behaviour of chromate ion and dichromate ion. The eqailibrium constants found at $20^{\circ}$ are $K = 4{\times}10^{53} for 7MoO_4^{2-} + 8H^+ {\longleftrightarrow} Mo7O_{24}^{6- }+ 4H_2O$$ K = 3{\times}10^{54} for 6WO_4^{2-} + 7H^+ {\longleftrightarrow} HW6O_{21}^{5-} + 7H_2O$ referring to this results the conditions of separation of tungstate and molybdate are obtained. iThe quantitative separations of carbonate, molybdate and tungstate from the pregnant solution have been established by anion exchange chromatography, using the $22 cm{\times}44.27 cm^2$ column of Rexyn 201. The optimum eluents for the quantitative separation of those ions are as follows; 0.2M solution of sodium chloride at pH 8 for carbonate, the mixture of 0.5 M ammonium chloride and 0.05 M sodium sulfate at pH 5 for molybdate and 0.5 M solution of ammonium chloride at pH 10 for tungstate. Tungstate is directly recovered from the pregnant solution as a form of ammonium paratungstate, by eluting with ammonium chloride solution.

  • In this study, an experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of the concentrations of tryptone, an organic nitrogen supplement, and sodium tungstate on the growth of microbial and the production of acetic acid and ethanol in the culture of Clostridium ljungdahlii. Microbial growth increased by 144.6%, and ethanol and acetic acid production improved by 8.6% and 36.7%, respectively, when 2.5 g/L of tryptone was added to the medium of the control experiment (0 g/L tryptone). In the experiment with 1 µM Na2WO4·2H2O, which is 100 times higher than the condition of the medium used in the control experiment (0.01 µM Na2WO4·2H2O), there was no significant difference in microbial growth or total production of C2 metabolites, but ethanol production increased and acetic acid production decreased. As a result, the ethanol/acetic acid production ratio increased significantly from 0.24 in the control experiment to 0.56.

  • Trioctylamine-and tricaprylylmethylammonium chloride-tungstate salts have been prepared by solvent extraction from the sodium tungstate solution of various acidities(pH = 2, 4, 6). The molecular weights of the amine-tungstate salts thus obtained could be cryoscopically measured in benzene by means of a home-built Wheatstone bridge utilizing thermistor with sensitivity of 1/$4000^{\circ}C$. The cryoscopic data along with the results of chemical analysis and infrared spectra of the salts indicate that the amine-tungstates prepared at pH = 2 and 4 are all metatungstate whereas the salt obtained at pH = 6 is an unknown form quite different from the expected paratungstate.R = 0.14. By hydrogen bonding a guanidyl nitrogen of a sulfaguanidine molecule is linked to the sulfonyl oxygens of the other molecules indirectly through two different water molecules. The role of water molecule is both a .nor and an acceptor in hydrogen-bonding formation and these hydrogen bonds are tetrahedrally o?ented. The hydrogen-bonding networks form infinite molecular layers parallel to (001) plane.

  • Chemicals related to hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) and nitric oxide (NO) generations were exogenously applied to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae (Fof) causing Fusarium wilt disease in strawberry plants, and regulations of in vitro conidial germination and mycelial growth of the fungus by the chemical treatments were evaluated. $H_2O_2$ drastically reduced the conidial germination of Fof in a dose-dependent manner, and treatment with 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (3-AT) catalase inhibitor also led to dose-dependent inhibition of conidial germination but relatively moderately. Gradual decreases in mycelial growth of Fof were found by high concentrations of $H_2O_2$, whilst exogenous 3-AT slightly increased the mycelial growth. Increasing sodium nitroprusside (SNP) NO donor, $N^G$-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) NO synthase (NOS)-inhibitor and tungstate nitrate reductase (NR) inhibitor led to dose-dependent reductions in conidial germination of Fof in quite different levels. SNP conversely increased the mycelial growth but increasing L-NAME moderately decreased the mycelial growth. Tungstate strongly enhanced mycelial growth. Differentially regulated in vitro mycelial growths of Fof were demonstrated by SNP, L-NAME and tungstate with or without $H_2O_2$ supplement. Superoxide anion production was also regulated during the mycelial growth of Fof by nitric oxide. These results show that $H_2O_2$ and NO-associated enzymes can be suggested as fungal growth regulators of Fof as well as eco-friendly disease-managing agents in strawberry production fields.

  • In this study, the electroless deposition of Co-B and Co-W-B alloy thin films was developed and the effect of B and W contents on the hardness of the alloy thin films were investigated. An amorphous Co alloy film was successfully formed by electroless deposition and the contents of B and W in the film were controlled by varying the concentrations of dimethylamine borane and sodium tungstate dihydrate, which were used as a reducing agent and W source, respectively. The hardness of the thin films increased as the contents of B and W were increased because B and W act as impurities suppressing the propagation of dislocation in a film. In addition, it was found that the content of B and W in the Co alloy films can be increased significantly when aeration is not performed. Finally, the hardness of Co-W-B alloy thin film was improved up to 8.9 (${\pm}0.3$) GPa.

  • Isopolytungstic acid and it's salts, which are formed in sodium tungstate solutions, when acidified with perchloric acid, have been investigated by cryoscopic method. The results obtained are summarized as follows; It was not possible to measure the molecular weight of sodium isopolytungstates which are salthydrates, by means of cryoscopic method. Regardless of the concentration of solution, paratungstate and acid hexatungstate are formed at $H^+/WO_4^{2-}$ ratio of 1.15 and 1.50. It has been shown that isopolytungstic acid and it's salts are also formed at $H^+/WO_4^{2-}$ ratio of 1.30 and 1.90 and in highly concentrated solutions at 1.40 and 1.65.

  • A novel chemical method was evaluated to fabricate the ultrafine tungsten heavy alloy powders with bater-base solution made from the ammonium metatungstate (AMT), iron(II) chloride tetrahydrate ($FeCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$), nickel(II) chloride hexahydrate ($NiCl_2{\cdot}6H_2O$) as source materials and the sodium tungstate dihydrate ($NaWO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$) as Cl-reductant. In the preparation of mixtures the amounts of the source components were chosen so as to obtain alloy of 93W-5Ni-2Fe composition(wt.%). The obtained powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, XRF, field-emission scanning microscope (FESEM), and chemical composition was analyzed by EDX.
