  • As the result of the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the surfactant mixture, the main surfactant of the fast biodegradable detergent which were derived from vegetable oil was Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. The Detergents contained sodium lauryl sulfate, nonionic surfactant, soap, etc, as the rest sufactants. Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate and ${alpha}-Olefin$ Sulfonate which were derived from petroleum were not detected. The biodegradation rate of the detergent prepared from vegetable oil was faster than that of the detergent derived from petroleum stood in 7 days.

  • Acid-base equilibria and spectroscopic properties of diazepam and chlorodiazepoxide were investigated in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micellar solutions as functions of pH. The results were compared with the behaviors in homogeneous aqueous media. The presence of SDS increased the $pK_a$ of chlorodiazepoxide to 6.3 from 4.7, while it has little effect on the $pK_a$ of diazepam. The acidic protonated form of diazepam was moderately fluorescent when the solution was excited at 350 nm, and emissnion intensity of the species was enhanced about 5 fold by the presence of SDS. On the other hand, the acidic solution of chlorodiazepoxide was non-fluorescent, but the neutral solution of the compound was fluorescent upon excitation at 350 nm. The emission peak of the neutral chlorodiazepoxide shifted to shorter wavelength region without significant change in the emission intensity upon the addition of SDS. Procedures for assay of the individual drugs from their mixture by the use of SDS micelle were discussed.

  • The polarographic and conductometric studies of methyl viologen $(MV^{++})$ solutions with varying concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) showed strong association of $MV^{++}$ and its cationic radical, $MV^+$., with SDS below the critical micelle concentration. The stoichiometries of these associations were found to be their electric charge ratios. Both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions were found to contribute to the associations. The formation constant of$MV^+.DS^-$ in 0.1 M NaCl was $7{\times}10^3M$. The $MV^{++}$-SDS association was observed to be cooperative leading to formation of large aggregates. In the presence of $MV^{++}$, the micellization of SDS was formation of SDS homo-micelle without direct involvement of $MV^{++}$.

  • The effect of pH and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelle on the quenching of Ru(bpy)32+ luminescence by N-alkyl-4,4'-bipyridinium ions (RBPY+: R=methyl, octyl, dodecyl, benzyl) were investigated. In the absence of SDS, the quenching rate at pH 2 is similar to that of the corresponding methylalkyl viologens and much greater than that in pH 8 solution due to greater reducibility of the protonated form of RBPY+ (HRBPY2+). The quenching rate at pH 2 is strongly enhanced by the presence of SDS, while that at basic pH is greatly retarded. These observations are explained by deep embedment of RBPY+ into the hydrophobic hydrocarbon region of the micelle, whereas Ru(bpy)32+ and HRBPY2+ locate in the Stern layer of the micelle.

  • Cyclic voltammetric behavior of symmetric (dimethyl, diheptyl, dioctyl, dibenzyl) and asymmetric (methyloctyl, methyldodecyl, methylbenzyl) viologens was investigated in homogeneous aqueous solution and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micellar media. In SDS-free 0.1 M NaCl solutions, the reduction potential is less negative as the chain length of alkyl substituent is longer. This is due to the stabilization of the reduced cationic radical and neutral form of viologen by adsorption on electrode surface. The adsorbed species show the "aging-effect". With the exceptions of methyldodecyl viologen and methylbenzyl viologen, the viologens show strong tendency of conproportionation reaction between viologen dications and neutral forms. In cases of methyldodecyl viologen and methylbenzyl viologen, the conproportionation reaction is kinetically disfavored, though it is thermodynamically favorable. SDS micelles dissolve the adsorbed species and the viologens exhibit two reversible redox processes in SDS micellar solutions. The reduction potentials of viologens in SDS micellar solutions depend little on the length of alkyl chain. Benzyl-substituted viologens are more easily reduced than the alkyl substituted viologens, presumably due to electron-withdrawing character of benzyl group.

  • A fast and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry compatible protein staining method in one- and two-dimensional sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis is described. It is based on the counterion dye staining method that employs oppositely charged two dyes, Zincon and Ethyl Violet to form an ion-pair complex. It is safe to use since the methanol used previously in staining solution was replaced with ethanol, which is not toxic. The protocol including fixing, staining and quick washing steps can be completed in 1 to 1.5 h depending upon gel thickness. (omitted)

  • Corticosteroids have been used most frequently for inflammatory bowel disease. They are well absorbed and only a limited fraction of the dose is delivered to the inflammatory site in the colon. To reduce side effects by the systemic absorption. colon-specific delivery is highly desirable. We designed dexamethasone 21-sulfate sodium (DS) as a cOlon-specific prodrug of dexamethasone (D) expecting that it might be stable and non absorbable in the upper intestine and dissociate in the colon by the sulfatase, an enzyme solely found in the colon. • In acid hydrolysis process of biomass saccharification. neutralization of acid hydrolyzate is essential step, which resulted in dissolved cations in glucose solution. Impact of cations to Kluyveromyces marxianus in glucose solution was investigated focused on ethanol fermentation. Either potassium or sodium cations decreased the ethanol fermentation and glucose to ethanol conversion. Glucose consumption by K. marxianus was delayed by increasing potassium cation concentration as completely consumed within 12 h in potassium cation 0.46 mol and 0.92 mol but within 24 h in potassium cation 1.38 mol. Also, ethanol fermentation process was slowed down with increasing concentration of the potassium sulfate. Fermentation of glucose solution to ethanol was more inhibited by sodium cation than potassium cation in glucose solution. Glucose was completely consumed within 24 h in sodium cation 0.95 mol. but at 1.90 mol or 2.84 mol in sodium cation could not finish the fermentation within 48 hour. Ethanol concentration was 22.26 g/L at low sodium cation in glucose solution with complete fermentation within 24 h. With increasing sodium cation in glucose solution, final ethanol concentration was reached at 14.10 g/L (sodium cation con) and 0.21 g/L (sodium cation con), which meant delaying of fermentation by sodium cations.

  • Biodiesel is an alternative and renewable energy source, which is hoped to reduce global dependence on petroleum and environmental problem. Biodiesel produced from a variety of oil sources such as vegetable oil, animal fat and waste oils, and has properties similar to those associated with petro-diesel, including cetane number, volumetric heating value, flash point, viscosity and so on. In this study, we investigate the effect of quality of raw materials on alkali-catalyzed transesterification for producing of biodiesel. The increase of content of free fatty acid and water in oil were caused the sharp decrease of conversion yield. Also, the low purity of methanol in reactant was inhibited the reaction rate. In the case of addition of sodium sulfate as absorbent to prepare catalyst solution, the content of fatty acid methyl ester in product was increased more about 1.6% than that of control. However, the addition of zeolite, sodium chloride and sodium sulfate as absorbent in reactant to remove water generated from reaction did not show any enhancement in the reaction yield. This result may provide useful information with regard to the choice and preparation of raw materials for more economic and efficient biodiesel production.
