  • Chlorine dioxide has an excellent ability to sterilize and deodorize and is harmless to humans. However, it is very unstable and explosive as it is highly concentrated, thus its use in the air clean filed has been limited. Therefore, there is a demand to develop the system to produce a low concentration of chlorine dioxide sustainedly. Here, for a first step in the development of the system on the sustained production of chlorine dioxide, the use of polymer hydrogels was investigated. P(MMA-co-HEMA) hydrogel particles were prepared via dispersion photopolymerization and sodium chlorite and citric acid were loaded respectively in the hydrogel particles. When sodium chlorite and citric acid were reacted with not loaded in the hydrogels, rapid production of chlorine dioxide occurred and the concentration of chlorine dioxide decreased over time. However, when sodium chlorite and citric acid were loaded respectively in the hydrogel particles and reacted, chlorine dioxide was produced slowly and sustainedly because the release of sodium chlorite and citric acid from the hydrogels delayed the reaction between them. The result shows that the use of P(MMA-co HEMA) hydrogels has the potential to develop the system on the sustained production of chlorine dioxide.

  • The effects of removal of lignin or hemicellulose on the cottonizing and pulping characteristics of kenaf fiber were studied by comparing the conditions of non-cellulosic material contents, fiber lengths and dyeability. And the effects of lignin or hemicellulose on dyeability of the kenaf fiber using CI Direct Green 26 and CI Direct Red 81 were investigated. The results were as follows. The lignin contents decreased and the kenaf fiber became shorter and finer as the reaction time with sodium chlorite increased. The hemicellulose could be removed by treating sodium hydroxide solution to the fiber from which the lignin partly removed. The 80% of hemicellulose could be removed by 5% of sodium hydroxide solution in 5 minutes. But if lignin were not removed at all, hemicellulose could not be removed. The fiber lengths proper for apparel were obtained after treating sodium chlorite for 10-20 minutes and those for pulping were obtained after treating sodium chlorite for 40 minutes. The kenaf fibers from which lignin and hemicellulose partly removed were dyed with CI Direct Green 26 and CI Direct Red 81. Their dyeability increased as the removal rates of lignin increased. The ${\Delta}E$ values of kenaf fiber dyed with CI Direct Green 26 were lower than CI Direct Red 81.

  • Chlorine dioxide gas has an excellent ability for sterilization and deodorization, and is harmless to humans. However, it is very unstable and explosive as it is highly concentrated, thus its use in the air clean fields has been limited. Therefore, there is need to control chlorine dioxide gas at a low concentration for a long time. Chlorine dioxide gas could be produced slowly and sustainedly since the release of acetic acid from the polymer hydrogels delayed the reaction between acetic acid and sodium chlorite. In addition, as the amount of both acetic acid sodium chlorite loaded within the hydrogel and on the membrane increased, respectively, the generation amount of chlorine dioxide gas increased. The result shows that the use of polymer hydrogels has the potential to control the generation of chlorine dioxide gas.

  • The feasibility of using bleaching treatments for removing fungal stain was evaluated on heavily stained raiadta pine sapwood. Sodium chlorite and sodium hypochlorite appeared to destain fungal discoloration by providing proper treatment conditions (chemical concentration, treatment temperature, and treatment time), while hydrogen peroxide did not remove fungal stain under the bleaching regimes evaluated. The addition of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide in the hydrogen peroxide solution as a buffer could remove fungal discoloration completely; however, the color of wood surface turned faint green after bleaching, thereby reducing the lightness of bleached samples. The results suggest that hydrogen peroxide bleaching could be a feasible method for removing fungal discoloration of stained radiata pine sapwood, although further research is needed to solve the problem of color change after bleaching. Also, further tests under field conditions are recommended.

  • Acetylcellulose(AC) was prepared with steam exploded wood(EXW) and EXW after delignification with sodium chlorite, pine (Pinus densiflora) and oak (Quercus mongolica) woods. The color of acetylated pine and oak exploded wood was brown, degree of substitution(D.S) of pine was 1.47~2.09, and this of oak was 1.49~2.29. The hemicellulose content of acetylated pine and oak exploded wood was 0~3.4% and 1.49~11.3%, individually. The degree of substitution of acetylated wood prepared from delignified EXW in the pine and oak wood was 0.50~0.71 and 0.70~0.88, individually. Hemicellulose content of acetylated EXW with sodium chlorite after delignification in the pine and oak wood was less than 1% and 0.6~2.5%. The color of acetylated wood after delignification was white. IR-spectra of acetylated pine and oak EXW after delignification were found that peaks at around 1740$cm^{-1}$ and 1200$cm^{-1}$ increase markedly, due to ester carbonyl group.

  • Jeju island is composed mainly of volcanic rocks such as basalts, trachytic andesites, tracytes, and sedimentary rocks. About 80% of Jeju soils are classified as Andisols. The amount of annual precipitation in Jeju island is about 1872mm, which is 1.5 times the annual precipitation of south Korea. There is a significant difference In amount of precipitation with regions even within Jeju island. In study area, the annual amount of rainfall is about 1280mm, the lowest in Jeju island while south part of the island has the annual precipitation of 2056mm, though they are only tens of kilometers apart. The parent materials of soils in study area are pyroclastic rocks and tuffs. The soils of non-andic properties have developed in this area since pedogenic process of pyroclastic materials is strongly influenced by climatic factor, especially precipitation. In order to investigate the mineralogical characteristics of soils, X-ray analysis for <0.2 and 2-0.2$\mu\textrm{m}$ size fractions was performed with ethylene glycol solvation, K-, Mg-saturation, heat treatment(110, 330, 550$^{\circ}C$). Acid-oxalate and DCB(sodium hydrosulfite, sodium citrate, sodium bicarbonate) dissolution method was used to assess tile total amounts or Al, si, and hydroxy interlayer or 2:1 layer silicates. XRD was also applied for samples treated with DCB only and DCB-oxalate sequentially. XRD patterns showed that 2:1 and 1:1 layer silicates were found, which are different from soils of Andisols. Vermiculite, chlorite, hydroxy interlayered minreals, and interstratified minerals(vermiculite/chlorite) were observed in 2-0.2$\mu\textrm{m}$ size fractions. After DCB treatments, ethylene glycolated samples with Mg-saturation showed expanded d-spacing, suggesting the possibility of hydroxy interlayered minerals. The amounts of hydroxy interlayered minerals increased in surface soil. Unlike Andisols, short range ordered minerals such as allophane, imogolite and gibbsite were hardly found. Mica and kaolinte existed in small amounts. Results are summarized in Fig 1 and Fig. 2.

  • A characteristic study of chlorine dioxide generation by the electrolysis system was performed after chlorite ($ClO_2^-$) is adsorbed from sodium chlorite by a polymer ion exchange resin. A strongly basic anion exchange resin was used and a Ti plate coated with Ru and Ir was used as an electrode. Various parameters such as reaction stirring velocity, reaction temperature, chlorine dioxide product concentration, ion exchange resin content and product maker type for the adsorption quantity in the chlorite adsorption of ion exchange resin were investigated and found the ion exchange resin with the maximum adsorption quantity. A generation trend of chlorine dioxide was observed by the electrolysis system and optimum conditions on the desired value were found using response surface design of DOE (Design of Experiments). The strongly basic anion exchange resin with the maximum adsorption quantity was SAR-20 (TRILITE Gel type II) and the adsorption quantity was around 110 mg/IER (g). Observed generation optimum conditions of chlorine dioxide were constant-current (electrode area base; $A/dm^2$) and flow rate of $N_2$ gas (4.7 L/min) at the desired value of sterilization (900~1000 ppm, 1 h).

  • A characteristic study of aqueous chlorine dioxide generation from sodium chlorite($NaClO_2$) by an undivided electrochemical cell with different anode materials were performed. $IrO_2$-coated Ti, $RuO_2$-coated Ti and DSA were used as anode materials and Pt-coated Ti electrode was used as cathode. Various electrochemical cell operating parameters such as cell residence time($t_R$), initial feed solution pH, sodium chlorite and sodium chloride(NaCl) concentration and applied current for the generation of chlorine dioxide in an un-divided cell were investigated and optimized. Estimated optimal cell residence times in $IrO_2$-coated Ti, $RuO_2$-coated Ti and DSA anode material systems were around 2.27, 1.52 and 1.52 sec, respectively. Observed optimum initial feed solution pH was around 2.3 in all anode material systems. Optimum sodium chlorite concentrations in $IrO_2$-coated Ti, $RuO_2$-coated Ti and DSA anode systems were around 0.43, 0.43 and 0.32 g/L, respectively. Optimum electrolyte concentration and applied current were around 5.85 g/L and 0.6 A in all anode systems. Current efficiencies of $IrO_2$-coated Ti, $RuO_2$-coated Ti and DSA anode systems under optimum conditions were 79.80, 114.70 and 70.99%, respectively. Obtained energy consumptions for the optimum generation of chlorine dioxide were 1.38, 1.03 and $1.61W{\cdot}hr/g-ClO_2$, respectively.

  • The glyoxal has been used as formaldehyde free DP(durable press) agents in wrinkle free treatment for cotton fabrics. However, the yellowing problem is a disadvantage of DP finishing process for cotton fabrics with glyoxal. In order to improve the whiteness, it was investigated that the effect of coreactant and treatment method with various whitening additives such as STB(sodium tetraborate, $Na_2B_4O_7$), SPB(sodium perborate, $NaBO_3$), SC(sodium chlorite, $NaClO_2$) and SPC(sodium percarbonate, $Na_2CO_3{\cdot}1.5$ $H_2O_2$). The increasing the concentration of whitening additives(STB, SPB, SC and SPC), the whiteness and the strength retention ratio of cotton fabrics were increased but the wrinkle recovery angles were decreased in one bath method. It was not suitable to improve whiteness because the whiteness value is about 60. In the case of SC used two bath method, the whiteness is near 70, which is similar to untreated fabrics, without decreasing of WRA and strength.

  • This study examined the effects of lactic acid spray, hot water spray, or their combined treatment, as well as the effects of acidified sodium chlorite (ASC), for the decontamination of Escherichia coli on beef carcass surfaces using a commercial intervention system. With this system, the effects of 2 or 4% lactic acid (v/v), hot water ($89{\pm}1^{\circ}C$), or their combined treatment, were examined in terms of reducing inoculated E. coli. ASC (266 ppm), which was adjusted to pH 2.5 using acetic acid or citric acid, was applied using a hand-held spray system. When the beef carcasses were treated with 2 or 4% lactic acid for 10.4 s, less than 1 log reductions of inoculated E. coli were observed. A hot water spray treatment for 9.8 s resulted in a 2.1 log reduction of inoculated E. coli. However, when the hot water was followed with either 2 or 4% lactic acid, no difference in E. coli reduction was found between the hot water alone or the combined treatment with lactic acid. When ASC was adjusted to pH 2.5 with acetic acid and citric acid, 3.8 and 4.1 log reductions of E. coli were observed, respectively. Overall, the lactic acid spray treatment was least effective, and the ASC treatment was most effective, for the E. coli decontamination of beef carcasses. Therefore, these data suggest that ASC would be a more effective intervention against E. coli than most of the methods currently being used. However, more research is required to evaluate the effects of ASC on other organisms, as well as to identify application methods that will not affect meat quality.
