  • The novelty in the present search, the Soda-Lime-Silica (SLS) glass waste to prepare free lead glass shielding was used in order to limit the accumulation of glass waste, which requires extensive time to decompose. This also saves on the consumption of pure SiO2, which is a finite resource. Furthermore, the combining of BaO with Bi2O3 into a glass network leads to increased optical properties and improved attenuation. The UV-Visible Spectrophotometer was used to investigate the optical properties and the radiation shielding properties were reported for current glass samples utilizing the PhysX/PDS online software. The optical property results indicate that when BaO content increases in glass structure, the Urbach energy ΔE, and refractive index n increases while the energy optical band gap Eopt decreases. The result of the metallisation criteria (M) revealed that the present glass samples are nonmetallic (insulators). Furthermore, the radiation shielding parameter findings suggest that when BaO was increased in the glass structure, the linear attenuation coefficient and effective atomic number (Zeff) rose. But the half-value layer HVL declined as the BaO concentration grew. According to the research, the glass samples are non-toxic, transparent to visible light, and efficient radiation shielding materials. The Ba5 sample is considered the best among all the samples due to its higher attenuation value and lower HVL and MFP values, which make it a suitable candidate as transparent glass shield shielding.

  • The glass compositions of $PbO-SiO_2-B_2O_3$ system and $P_2O_5-PbO-ZnO$ system for the transparent dielectric materials for front panel and $P_2O_5$-ZnO-BaO and $SiO_2-ZnO-B_2O_3$ for the reflective dielectric materials for back panel of PDP (Plasma Display Panel) were investigated. As a result, transparent dielectric materials for front panel showed good dielectric properties, high transparency, and proper thermal expansion matching to soda lime glass substrate. And the reflective dielectric layers for back panel were prepared from two series of parent glass and oxide filler. It was found that these glassceramics are useful materials for dielectric layers in PDP device, as they have similar thermal expansion to soda-lime glass plate, high reflectance, and low sintering temperature. In particular, the addition of $BPO_4$ and $TiO_2$ as fillers to $SiO_2-ZnO-B_2O_3$ system is considered to be the most effective for acquiring good properties of lower dielectric layer for PDP device.

  • To produce a strengthened glass, single ion exchange properties such as three-point bend strength and residual stress were investigated in soda-lime-silicate substrate glass for display use. The present work showed that the maximum value of strength was 62.5${\times}$10$\sub$6/ kg/㎡ after, the two-step single ion exchange process at 470$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h and 450$^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. As the result of the fracture analysis after bending test, the residual stress on the fractured surface of the strengthened glass increased the flexibility by means of absorbing the elastic deformation energy in the glass. Also, the effects of absorbing the elastic deformation energy were analysed by curvature change, number of multiple crack branches and brittleness.

  • We have investigated a glass-forming region of $V_2O_5-P_2O_5-ZnO$ glass and the effects of the addition of modifier oxides ($B_2O_3$) to the glass systems as a sealing material to improve the adhesion between the glass frits and a soda lime substrate. Thermal properties and coefficient of thermal expansion were measured using a differential scanning calorimetry, a dilatometer and a hot stage microscopy. Structural changes and interfacial reactions between the glass substrate and the glass frit after sintering (at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 h) were measured by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the adhesion strength increases as the content of $B_2O_3$ at 5 mol% increases because of changes in the structural properties. It seems that the glass structures change with $B_2O_3$, and the $Si^{4+}$ ions from the substrate are diffused to the sealing glass. From these results, we could understand the mechanism of strengthening of the adhesion of soda lime silica substrate by ion-diffusion from the substrate to the glass.

  • Dujeong-dong site of Cheonan is known as the site of Baekje period in the first half of the fourth century. This study investigated the visible properties and the chemical composition of the 18 pieces of the glass found in the site, and considered scientific properties and periodic interrelationship of the glass on the basis of the analysis result. The observation of the visible properties and microstructure of ancient glass was performed with both an electron microscope and an optical microscope, and the chemical composition was conducted by way of both quantitative and qualitative analysis using Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectrometer(EDS). In the analysis result, various chemical composition systems are identified in the glass beads of Dujeong-dong site, such as lead-barium, soda and potash glass, and also different shapes were found such as gold foil glass beads, tubular beads, and round beads. It is estimated that the classification of glass by means of its chemical composition was also closely related to the color of glass.

  • The soda lime waste glass powder was dissolved in NaOH-4M solution to synthesize an alkaline activator, which was used to activate Class-C fly ash (FA). Compressive and flexural strength tests were conducted to determine the mechanical properties. Archimedes' principle was applied to measure the porosity of samples, (SEM-EDX) and XRD was used to study the microstructure and phase changes of samples. Through Inductive Coupled Plazma technique, the solution was found to increase the concentration of Si as the amount of dissolved glass powder was increased. Owing to the increased concentration of Si in an alkaline solution, the reactivity of FA was accelerated resulting in an increased strength and reduced porosity. Additionally, the dissolution of FA was improved as well as the formation of amorphous phases in the matrix was also enhances with the concentration of increased Si in an alkaline solution.

  • In this study, a new wet etching method and the solution for thinning the glass with the thickness below $100{\mu}m$ were investigated. For the preparation of etching solution with low hydrofluoric acid, it was effective to use $NH_4F$ or $NH_4HF_2$ as a main ingredient with the addition of sulfuric acid or nitric acid. Influence of the composition of mixed acid solution and the temperature on the etching rate was investigated. The addition of anionic surfactant provides the function to prevent the adhesion of sludge generated by the etching reaction. A new wet etching pilot device equipped with streaming generation parts was used to test etching of commercial non-alkali glass and soda lime glass. The non-alkali glass with the thickness of 640 ${\mu}m$ and soda lime glass with the thickness of $500{\mu}m$ were etched to $45{\mu}m$ and $100{\mu}m$, respectively, by using the pilot device. After the etching by pilot device, the roughness degree of the glass surface was maintained at $0.01{\sim}0.02{\mu}m$.

  • Brittle materials such as glasses and ceramics, which are very weak under impact loading, show fragile failure mode due to their low fracture toughness and crack sensitivity. When brittle materials are subjected to impact by small spheres, high contact pressure occurs at the impacted surface causing local damage on the specimen. This damage is a dangerous factor in causing the final fracture of structures. In this research, the crack propagation process of soda-lime glass by the impact of small spheres is explained and the effects of several constraint conditions for impact damage were studied by using soda-lime glass; that is, the effects for the materials and sizes of impact ball, thickness of specimen and residual strength were evaluated. Especially, this research has focused on the damage behavior of ring cracks, cone cracks and several other kinds of cracks.
