The relationship between socio-economic status and food and nutrient consumption patterns was studied in 7,370 Koreans aged 20 years and older in the 1995 Korean Health and Nutrition Survey. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of rapid economic growth on food and nutrient consumption for Korean adults in the last 30 years. Monthly household income, and individual's educational level and occupation were chosen as variables of socio-economic status for individuals. A one day 24 hour recall method was used for the dietary survey. One way analysis of varience was adopted to test tole association between socio-economic variables and food and nutrient consumption patterns. Individuals who had a high socio-economic status had significantly higher daily intake of most of the nutrients including calcium, vitamin A, vitamin B$_2$which reached above the recommended dietary allowances(RDA) and a higher percentage energy consumption from fat. In addition, individual who belonged to a low socio-economic status consumed less animal foods, including meat, egg, milk and consumed low proportion of energy from fat. The results suggest that in spite of rapid economic growth during the last 30 years in Korea, individuals who belonged to low sorio-economic status categories are still nutritionally vulnerable. Among the sorio-economic variables, income and education except occupation were the influential factors on the food and nutrient consumption of Koreans. Therefore, nutrition policy should focus on influencing the dietary patterns of lower social class individuals to improve the health status of the population as a whole.
Purpose: This study explores the relationship between the health behavior and knowledge of elementary school students and the socio-economic status of their parents. Methods: A self-administrated questionnaire was provided to 238 students and their parents living within Seoul metropolitan area. The questionnaires were administered during December 2003. The relationship betweensocio-economic status, health behavior (19 items) and health knowledge (15 items) were analyzed using correlation, t-test and one-way ANOVA. Multiple regression analyses were also performed in order to investigate the relationship between health behavior and socio-economic status. Results: The results of multiple regression demonstrated that the health behavior of children living in apartments was 2.29 higher ($\beta$=2.29) than those not living in apartments. Health behavior scores among students with highly educated mothers were 0.42 higher ($\beta$=0.42) than those for students with relatively uneducated mothers. These numbers represent statistically significant values. Conclusion: Since health behavior appears to be directly proportional to socio-economic status ofthe parent, active intervention may be required in order to improve the health behavior of children with poorly educated mothers and who live in independent or multi-household houses.
The purpose of this study was to examine the financial status of the small business households, and to analyze their investment behaviors according to socio-economic variables like age, income, education, job satisfaction, and region. The size of total sample was 2167 with basis of data analysis of Korean Household Panel Study from Daewoo Economic Research Center. The purpose of our study is to analyze the effect of socio-economic status on the diet pattern of Korean adults. Raw data from the fifth (2010-2012) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) were used, and finally 11,700 adults were analyzed as subjects. Results in consideration of the socio-economic status of the subjects, a linear trend was observed in men in which the odds ratio of having lunch (p for trend=0.006) and dinner (p for trend=0.0317) decreased as the level of education went down. In diet frequency, a decreasing trend (p for trend=0.0328) was observed in which the odds ratio of having 3 meals a day reduced as the household income lowered. For women, a linear trend (p for trend=0.0012) was observed in which the frequency of dinner decreased as the level of education became lower. A falling trend in the rate of having 3 meals a day was also observed (p for trend=0.0135). Our study analyzed the characteristics of the diet patterns of individuals according to their socio-economic status with the purpose of suggesting guidelines for correcting. To prevent this, we will need education and awareness and public attention for the practice of correct eating habits.

This study aims to fathom the relationship between socio-economic security and social cohesion which are two sub-domains of Social Quality, on the institutional context of welfare state. In order to grasp the institutional context of welfare state, the study adopted welfare status theory and measured socio-economic resources of individuals via the status as welfare beneficiary and welfare taxpayer. The study postulates a theoretical model that the socio-economic security domain affects the social cohesion domain. In order to verity the theoretical hypothesis, this study utilized structural equations analysis(SEM) using social survey data conducted in year 2008. Recognition of social trust was included as the core index of social cohesion, and welfare statuses, socio-economic security and social trust were inserted in the sequence. Results revealed that the amount of resource in regards to welfare status of rights had significant influence on the socio-economic security, whereas it had no significant relations in regards to welfare status of duties. The recognition of socio-economic security derived from status of welfare rights and duties were positively associated with recognition of social trust. Also, the recognition of socio-eocnomic security turned out to have significant influence on social trust. Conclusively, among the two sub-domains of Social Quality, the study found that the socio-economic domain has influence on social cohesion domain. Such results suggest that in order to enhance the overall social cohesion in Korea, more delicate arrangement of welfare institutions are required.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between demographic variables and seven aspects of clothing behavior of adult males, and to attempt to develop the measurement of men's clothing behavior. Age was ranked by five gradation (20∼60 ages) and socio-economic status was divided into three categories (high, middle, low) based on the subjects' education, occupation and economic status. Six aspects of clothing comfort, satisfaction, status symbol, conformity, fashion interest and clothing acceptance I were assessed with Koh's, Chung's and Lee's questionnaires. Clothing acceptance by line-drawing of clothing syles representing different levels of formality for occasions designed to measure the awareness of appropriate clothing category of business suits. The questionnaires in this study were administered to a sample of men living in Seoul. The sample was drawn by the random-cluster sampling method. The data from 362 respondants were analysed. To determine the internal validity of clothing behavior mesurement, factor analysis was computed, whereas to determine the reliability, Cronbach's alpha was calculated. The statistical methods adopted were correlation, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1) As for clothing behavior instruments, items dealing with status symbol and fashion nterest were proved to be satisfactory as a measurement of adult males. Eight factors emerged on clothing acceptance Ⅱ, most of which were representing unappropriate clothing choice for occasion. 2) Demographic variables were significantly related to the adult males' clothing behavior. (1) Age was positively related to clothing conformity but negatively to fashion interest. (2) Socio-economic status was positively related to clothing satisfaction, status symbol, and fashion interest but negatively to clothing confort. (3) When age was controlled, socio-economic status was negatively related to comfort in 40∼50s age group only, and negatively related to clothing conformity in 20∼30s age group only. (4) Four subscales of clothing acceptance Ⅱ representing unappro-priate clothing practice for selected occasions were negatively related to age and/or socio-economic status.
There is growing evidence that substance use such as tobacco or alcohol consumption influences health disparity among adolescents. Previous research papers have shown an inconsistency in the relationship between socio-economic status (SES) and substance use in adolescents. However, little is known about socio-economic differences in unhealthy behaviors among Korean adolescents. The purpose of the present study is to explore associations between SES and substance use in Korean adolescents. The analysis was performed using data from the 2009 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (YRBS), which included a nationally representative sample of middle and high school students. Drinking/heavy drinking and smoking/daily smoking behavior indices were used for dependent variables, and perceived economic status, family affluence score, parents' education were used for independent variables. Chi-square test were used to compare tobacco and alcohol consumption among 3 SES groups. Logistic regression models were used to identify statistically significant socio-economic factors after adjusting other covariates. Higher perceived economic status and higher family affluence were associated with higher rates of smoking, daily smoking, drinking, and heavy drinking, while lower level of parents' education was related to higher use of tobacco and alcohol. Socio-economic status significantly influences health behaviors in adolescents, and it may consequently affect health disparity in their adulthood. Therefore, there is a need of continuous monitoring and follow-up research of health disparity among adolescents.

Research on micro-level assessment of the changes of socio-economic status following health interventions is very scarce. The use of household asset data to determine wealth indices is a common procedure for estimating socio-economic position in resource poor settings. In such settings information about income is usually lacking, and the collection of individual consumption or expenditure data would require in-depth interviews, posing a considerable risk of bias. In this study, we determined the socio-economic status of 213 households in a community population in an island in the north-western Tanzania before and 3 year after implementation of a participatory hygiene and sanitation transformation (PHAST) intervention to control schistosomiasis and intestinal worm infections. We constructed a household 'wealth index' based housing construction features (e.g., type of roof, walls, and floor) and durable assets ownership (e.g., bicycle, radio, etc.). We employed principal components analysis and classified households into wealth quintiles. The study revealed that asset variables with positive factor scores were associated with higher socio-economic status, whereas asset variables with negative factor scores were associated with lower socio-economic status. Overall, households which were rated as the poorest and very poor were on the decrease, whereas those rated as poor, less poor, and the least poor were on the increase after PHAST intervention. This decrease/increase was significant. The median shifted from -0.4376677 to 0.5001073, and the mean from -0.2605787 (SD; 2.005688) to 0.2605787 (SD; 1.831199). The difference in socio-economic status of the people between the 2 phases was highly statistically significant (P<0.001). We argue that finding of this study should be treated with caution as there were other interventions to control schistosomiasis and intestinal worm infections which were running concurrently on Kome Island apart from PHAST intervention.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the level of stress recognition of urban housewife and the method of coping, and to explore bow these factors are influenced by socio-demographic variables such as the age of housewife, level of education, status of employment, number of children, durations of marriage, types of family, religion and socio-economic status. The research was conducted on 431 housewives in Seoul in August, 1985. As for the measurement of the instrument, 48 item questionnaire made by investigator was used. The questionnaire was based upon modified and upplemented Holme & Rahe's SRRS and Bell's 18-item Questionnaire to be appropriate to Korean culture. Data were analyzed by percentage, frequency and mean, and verified significant difference by ANOVA and performed Spearman's correlation coefficient. The results of this study are as follows; 1) There is some similarity in distribution of the level of stress recognition of urban housewife. 2) the level of education and the durations of marriage have influence upon the level of stress recognition of urban housewife. In each area, there are differences among groups : age, level of education, durations of marriage, number of children and types of family in the area of education ; age, status of employment, and durations of marriage in the area of health; level of education, durations of marriage, number of children and socio-economic status in the area of finance; status of employment in the area of household work. 3) There are several methods in the method of coping to stress of housewife and the score of long-term coping method appears higher than that of short-term. 4) The level of education, number of children, religion and socio-economic status were variables to have influence on the method level of education, religion and socio- economic status were variables to have influence and in the long-term coping method level of education, number of children, religion, and socio-economic status were to have influence. 5) There is very low positive correlation between the level of stress recognition of urban housewife and the method of coping to stress( ρ=.10, P<.05). 6)In the relation between several variables in socio-demographic variables and the method to coping to stress, the lower the level of stress recognition there are negative correlation (ρ=-.28, P<.01) between religion and the method of coping and also negative correlation (ρ=-.16, P<.05) between number of children and the method of coping. There are positive correlation between socio-economic status and the method of coping.
