One of the most important reasons for using online game is intrinsic motivation which relates the drive to perform a behavior for perceptions of pleasure and satisfaction from the behavior itself. Therefore, most studies for using online game have been based on theories for intrinsic motivation such as flow. However, such theories have some limitations for explaining social aspects of online games such as Massively Multiplayer Online Role Game (MMORPG), which provides a society for game players by using a virtual space for playing games so called 'persistent world'. Adaptive structuration theory (AST) is one of trying to capture the change of using IT due to social interactions between users and system. In order to explain online game players' behavior considering social interaction, we suggest a research model based on AST. Our model aims to investigate the relationship between appropriation which is determined by faithfulness of appropriation (FOA) and consensus on appropriation (COA) and performance which is represented by the relationship among perceived winning, flow, and intention of reuse. An empirical test of our model for 125 MMORPG users which is analyzed by Partial Least Square method shows very satisfactory and interesting results. While hypotheses suggested in our model are supported, the influence of COA on game performance is shown to be stronger than that of FOA.
Purpose: The purposes of this study are (1) to examine why users commit to M-SNG and (2) to understand what factors impact M-SNG users' enjoyment, motivation and commitment. Methods: We use a questionnaire survey to collect 190 data on users' perception on M-SNG. we also use a structural equation modeling method with Smart PLS 3.0 Results: Playfulness, design aesthetics, competition and social identity are found to be statistically significant factors affecting enjoyment and motivation. Also, enjoyment and motivation are found to be statistically significant factors affecting commitment. Conclusion: We suggest three points of view as game factors, socio-game factors, and social factors. Game factors are more important than other factors. Also, enjoyment is a more powerful factor than motivation in affecting user's commitment to using M-SNG.
The purpose of this study is to find out the mediation effects of social-support for adolescents' game addiction and school adaptation. For this study, 353 middle school students in the West-Gyungsangnamdo areas were included in the analysis. Setting as covariates, a mediator and extra variables significantly correlated with the criterion variable, regression analysis, SPSS Macro and bootstrapping methods were used to assess the mediation effects of social-support for adolescents' game addiction and school adaptation. The results showed that adolescents highly addicted to games tended to have more difficulty in adapting to school. However, it was found that social-support (mediator) fully mediated the influence of the adolescents' game addiction (predictor) on school adaptation (criterion variable). Based on the results of the analysis, we suggest implications for social work practice to improve how game-addicted adolescents settle down in middle school through increasing social-support - the mediator - and hence bring about a decrease in game addiction among adolescents.

Therefore, the predisposing variables on social functions of social games are explored through related theory and previous studies to propose the social function developing model of social games. The creation and interchange of information through the Internet network forms online community and makes Social Network Game (SNG) as a new entertainment by grafting it onto the most popular online games. SNG means the service which amalgamates social network service (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, etc) strong points and the fun of online game. It promotes the intimacy of relation between the friends above social network service and the gaming amusement for users. The domestic SNG market is currently fast changing according to the smart environment which is quickly shifted. The existing online game field will continuously maintain a market size. SNOG will be more developed because it is competitive from the business perspective of managing cost and production cost when compares with the existing online game. In relation to Facebook, Twitter, etc. overseas SNS platform base SNOG service, the domestic competition for launching SNG is expected to heat up as NHN, Daum and SK Communication introduce open type SNS. This study examines the successful factors and strategy for domestic SNOG by studying the case of MapleStory Adventures successful possibility. The possible successful factors are combing SNS on the existing popular online game, marketing through the existing users, and solving the platform problem of a failure factor of NexonStar. This case study is expected to contribute to the domestic SNOG industry development by providing several implications for the successful factors and strategy of SNOG which will be continuously developed.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of users guild system on game community activation. For the analysis, the paper used 2,876 users data of online game 'Gunju(Monarch)'. Social support between gamers who belong to guilds was more influential to community activation than that of gamers who doesn't belong to guilds. Especially, the fact was found that social support between guild members (internal social support) plays more important role on community activation than that between guild members and non guild members (external social support).
This study examines whether online game motivation, with social and expedition needs, are associated with the degree of loneliness among young adolescents. Using data from a survey of 2014 elementary-, middle- and high-school students in South Korea, a three-wave online survey was conducted to collect data from online players. Two latent growth cause-and-effect models were developed to test whether online game motivation influences degree of loneliness. Results showed that both social and expedition needs are positively associated with loneliness. This study contributes to the knowledge of the underlying needs for a player with loneliness and also highlights the social and expedition needs as potential therapeutic factors.
This study examined the effects of game genre, news media with differing political ideologies, and game-related information sources on gamer issue participation by performing a hierarchical regression model, using an online survey on Korean gamers (N=1,362). As a result of the study, playing specific genres of games played a positive role in gamer issue participation. The group behavior or collective action for or against game regulation reported in the liberal/moderate media acted as a mobilization cue for readers and potentially encouraged gamers to take social action. But the conservative media, which used governmental organizations and interest groups as sources of information, had a negative impact on real-life participatory behavior. The biased journalism practice of the mass media on game-related social issues influenced gamers' social and political behavior through corrective action. This study is significant in empirically analyzing the relationship between political ideology, game genre, media use, and gamers' social participation. The current research suggests the improvement of game regulation policy and the need for theoretical and conceptual expansion of game research.
