Enhancement of Complex Potential Navigation Method for Obstacle Avoidance of Mobile Robot (이동로봇의 장애물 회피를 위한 복소 포텐셜 항법의 개선)

  • This paper deals with the enhancement of the complex potential navigation for wheeled mobile robots. The circle theorem from complex function theory is used to avoid an obstacle, and the enhancement to avoid multiple obstacles is proposed. The limit cycle navigation can be combined for robot to kick the ball to the intentioned direction. Avoiding step and superposing twin vortices can be applied to adjust the direction of robot's trajectory. The proposed method is verified through a set of simulation works, and the feasibilities for the enhancement of complex potential theory are successful.

  • Researches on mobile robots have been mainly focused on the autonomous navigation and a lot of interesting results have been published so far. Most of applications are, however, fancy, unpractical, and very expensive to be used for 'UN-expensive' purpose. Well-known soccer robot may be an example of unpractical application. Un-autonomous mobile robot has, however, potential for a lot of practical applications. Especially, tele-operation of the un-autonomous mobile robot may the central issue of research. Major research topics for the tele-operated un-autonomous mobile robot include development of a force reflecting joystick for tele-operation and development of a sophisticated algorithm for smooth tele-operation. A new concept named fuzzy command smoothing algorithm is proposed in this paper in order to provide smooth motion to a tele-operated mobile robot. It gives smooth motion command to the mobile robot from possibly abrupt quick turn motion command of the joystick using fuzzy logic. Simulation results verify the usefulness of the proposed algorithm.

  • The velocity dipole field method is presented for real-time collision avoidance of mobile robots. The direction of motion of the obstacle is used as the axis of the dipole field, and the speed of the obstacle is used to proportionally strengthen the dipole field. The elliptical field lines of the dipole field are useful to skillfully guide the robot around obstacles, quite similar to the way humans avoid moving obstacles. Field modulation coefficient is also introduced to weaken the field effect as the obstacle recedes. The real-time algorithm of the velocity dipole field has been devised and experimentally tested on the robot soccer test-bed. The results show the capability of the new real-time collision avoidance strategy and how it can overcome the weaknesses in the conventional potential field method. The new method makes an explicit and proactive action of collision avoidance, unlike the conventional method, which forces the robot merely away from the obstacle aimlessly. The proposed method delivers greater capability with no considerable computational overhead

A Case Study of Introduction to Engineering Design Course using LEGO MINDSTORM NXT (LEGO MINDSTORM NXT를 이용한 공학설계입문 운영사례)

  • In this paper the author proposes a case study of a freshmen introduction to engineering design course ing LEGO Mindstorm NXT and analyzes the survey results of the course. The diffilculties are that this course should provide various aspects of design experiences to the students while not requiring the major knowledge and skills and it should attract the students to the engineering major. According to our case study LEGO mindstorm can be a good solution to this problem. The design experience with LEGO Mindstorm NXT provides students with various aspects of design experiences including defining problem, finding constraints and functions, exploring design space, and performing preliminary design, as well as fun. This paper also provides a project list that can be used for freshmen design experience including soccer game robots, line tracer, and vacuum cleaner etc.

An Appraisal of Drama 'KAIST' As an Informal Science Learning (비정규 과학학습으로 본 드라마 '카이스트' 평가)

  • KAIST' is the TV drama which has portrayed modem science & technology and the life of scientists & engineers for about one and half year. The purpose of this study is to appraise the drama 'KAIST' as an informal science learning. Using the interesting materials such as soccer robots, computer systems and satellites, the drama arouse students' interest and frequent watching. In general, the drama 'KAIST', as a source for informal science learning, played a positive role: it showed the image of scientists who have humane and sociable character being different from the students' image of real scientists, and changed positively the students' science-technology related attitudes, especially the attitudes towards scientists/engineers, science/technology, and the social nature of science/technology. Teachers commented that the drama 'KAIST' might arose students' interest in science, but the made-up contents and the genius-like characters could cause negative educational effects.
