  • In this paper, we propose a method of edge detection for noisy image. The proposed method uses a progressive filter for noise reduction and a Sobel operator for edge detection. The progressive filter combines a median filter and a modified rational filter. The proposed method for noise reduction adjusts rational filter direction according to an edge in the image which is obtained by median filtering. Our method effectively attenuates the noise while preserving the image details. Edge detection is performed by a Sobel operator. This operator can be implemented by integer operation and is therefore relatively fast. Our proposed method not only preserves edge, but also reduces noise in uniform region. Thus, edge detection is well performed. Our proposed method could improve results using further developed Sobel operator. Experimental results show that our proposed method has better edge detection with correct positions than those by existing median and rational filtering methods for noisy image.

  • An implementation of modified stereo matching using efficient belief propagation (BP) algorithm is presented in this paper. We do recommend the use of the simple sobel, prewitt edge operator. The application of B band sobel edge operator over image demonstrates result with somewhat noisy (distinct border). When we adopt the only MRF + BP algorithm, however, borders cannot be distinguished due to that the message functions in the BP algorithm is just the mechanism which passes energy data to the only large gap of each Message functions In order to address the abovementioned disadvantageous phenomenon, we use the sobel edge operator + MRF + BP algorithm to distinguish the border that is located between the similar message data. Using edge information, the result shows that our proposed process diminishes the propagation of wrong probabilistic information. The enhanced result is due to that our proposed method effectively reduced errors incurred by ambiguous scene properties.

  • A newmethod of fast mask operators for edge detection is proposed, which is based on the matrix factorization. The output of each component in the multi-directional mask operator is obtained adding every image pixels in the mask area weighting by corresponding mask element. Therefore, it is same as the result of matrix-vector multiplication like one dimensional transform, i, e, , trasnform of an image vector surrounded by mask with a transform matrix consisted of all the elements of eack mask row by row. In this paper, for the Sobel and Prewitt operators, we find the transform matrices, add up the number of operations factoring these matrices and compare the performances of the proposed method and the standard method. As a result, the number of operations with the proposed method, for Sobel and prewitt operators, without any extra storage element, are reduced by 42.85% and 50% of the standard operations, respectively and in case of an image having 100x100 pixels, the proposed Sobel operator with 301 extra storage locations can be computed by 35.93% of the standard method.

  • Lane extraction is basically required for a driving car to understand its external road environments via a camera. In this paper, a lane extraction method using "Sobel Intensity Profile" is described. The Sobel intensity profile is obtained using only vertical edge components of Sobel edge outputs, and used to yield fitted lines for lanes. The RANAC algorithm is applied to fit lines using only inliers. Experimental results have shown the reliability of the proposed lane extraction method.

  • The stereoscopic vision system is the algorithm to obtain the depth of target object of stereo vision image. This paper presents an efficient disparity matching method using blue edge filter and graph cut algorithm. We do recommend the use of the simple sobel edge operator. The application of B band sobel edge operator over image demonstrates result with somewhat noisy (distinct border). The basic technique is to construct a specialized graph for the energy function to be minimized such that the minimum cut on the graph also minimizes the energy (either globally or locally). This method has the advantage of saving a lot of data. We propose a preprocessing effective stereo matching method based on sobel algorithm which uses blue edge information and the graph cut, we could obtain effective depth map.

  • The edges of an image hold much of the information in that image. The edges tell where objects are, their shape and size, and something about their texture. An edge is where the intensity of an image moves from a low value to a high value. We introduce the edge detection using the differential operator with Sobel operator and describe a nonparametric Wilcoxon test based on statistical hypothesis testing for the detection of edges. This paper proposes an efficient edge detection using Van der Waerden's statistic in original and noisy images. We use the threshold determined by specifying significance level a and an edge-height parameter. Comparison with our statistical test and Sobel operator shows that Van der Waerden method perform more effectively in both noisy and noise-free images.

  • In this Paper, an efficient method of FPGA based design and implementation of Sobel Edge detector block using 3-Line buffers is presented. The FPGA provides the proper and sufficient hardware for image processing algorithms with flexibility to support Sobel edge detection algorithm. A pipe-lined method is used to implement the edge detector. The proposed Sobel edge detection operator is an model using of Finite State Machine(FSM) which executes a matrix mask operation to determine the level of edge intensity through different of pixels on an image. This approach is useful to improve the system performance by taking advantage of efficient look up tables, flip-flop resources on target device. The proposed Sobel detector using 3-line buffers is synthesized with Xilinx ISE 14.2 and implemented on Virtex II xc2vp-30-7-FF896 FPGA device. Using matlab, we show better PSNR performance of proposed design in terms of 3-Line buffers utilization.

  • The edges of image should be detected first so that the objects in the image can be identified. An hardware-implemented edge detection algorithm outperforms its software version. Sobel operation is the most suitable algorithm for an hardware implementation of edge detection. And lots of works have been done to perform Sobel operations efficiently on FPGA-based hardware. This work proposes how to implement fast edge detection circuit on FPGA, which is based on the conventional circuit for edge detection using Sobel operator. The newly proposed circuit is suitable for processing images when the images are stored in memory devices and outperforms the conventional one with little additional FPGA resources. Both the conventional circuit and the proposed circuit were implemented on an FPGA. And the result showed that the proposed circuit almost doubles the performance in processing images and needs little additional FPGA resources.

  • Based on a fuzzy system representation of gray scale images, we derive and edge detection algorithm whose convolution kernel is different from the known kernels such as those of Robert's Prewitt's or Sobel's gradient. Our fuzzy system representation is an exact representation of the bicubic spline function which represents the gray scale image approximately. Hence the fuzzy system is a continuous function and it provides a natural way to define the gradient and the Laplacian operator. We show that the gradient at grid points can be evaluated by taking the convolution of the image with a 3$\times$3 kernel. We also that our gradient coupled with the approximate value of the continuous function generates an edge detection method which creates edge images clearer than those by other methods. A few examples of applying our methods are included.

  • In this paper, we examine the statistical characteristics of edge enhancing filters and their efficacy as preprocessing operator before edge detection. In particular, edge enhancing filters called the Comparison and Selection(CS), Hachimura-kuwahara(HK), and Selective Average(SA) filters are considered. These filters can reduce noise while producing step-type edges, thus seem to be effective for preprocessing noisy images prior to applying edge detecors. The ability of edge enhancing filters to suppress white Gaussian noise and the error probabilities occured during the edge detection following SA prefiltering are evaluated statistically through numerical analysis. The effect of prefiltering on edge detection is assessed by applying the edge enhancing fitters to a noise image degraded by additive white noise prior to applying the Sobel operator and the Laplacian of Gaussian( LoG ) operator, respectively. It is shown that the edge enhancing filters tend to produce ideal step-type edges while reducing the noise reasonably well, and the use of edge enhancing filters prior to edge detection can improve the performance of subsequent edge detector.
