  • $SnO_2$ nanoparticles were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and gas sensors were fabricated using nanoparticles to detect dimethyl methylphosphonate(DMMP) gas. The prepared $SnO_2$ nanoparticles exhibited a high response(72 at $500^{\circ}C$) to 5 ppm DMMP gas compared to commercial $SnO_2$ nanopowders, but their recovery was relatively poor. Various metals(Ni, Sb, Nb) were added to the $SnO_2$ nanoparticles to improve their recovery properties. The focus of this study was to investigate the effects of metal oxide additives on DMMP sensing behavior in $SnO_2$ nanoparticles.

  • CuO doped $WO_3-SnO_2$ thick film gas sensors were fabricated by screen printing method on alumina substrates and heat-treated at $350^{\circ}C$ in air. The effects of mixing ratio of $WO_3$ with $SnO_2$ on the structural and morphological properties of $WO_3-SnO_2$ were investigated X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope. The structural properties of the $WO_3-SnO_2$:CuO thick film by XRD showed that the monoclinic of $WO_3$ and the tetragonal of $SnO_2$ phase were mixed. Nano CuO was coated on the $WO_3-SnO_2$ surface and then the surface of $WO_3$ was coated with $SnO_2$ particles with $1\sim1.5{\mu}m$ in diameters, as confirmed form the SEM image. The sensitivity of the $WO_3-SnO_2$:CuO sensor to 2000 ppm $CO_2$ gas and 50 ppm $H_2S$ gas for the various ratio of $WO_3$ and $SnO_2$ was investigated. The 4 wt% CuO doped $WO_3-SnO_2$(75:25) tkick films showed the highest sensitivity to $CO_2$ gas and $H_2S$ gas.

  • In this paper, methods for improving the sensitivity of gas sensors to NO2 gas are presented. A gas sensor was fabricated based on an SnO2 nanowire network using the vapor-phase-growth method. In the gas sensor, the Au electrode was replaced with a fluorinedoped tin oxide (FTO) electrode, to achieve high sensitivity at low temperatures and concentrations. The gas sensor with the FTO electrode was more sensitive to NO2 gas than the sensor with the Au electrode: notably, both sensors were based on typical SnO2 nanowire network. When the Au electrode was replaced by the FTO electrode, the sensitivity improved, as the contact resistance decreased and the surface-to-volume ratio increased. The morphological features of the fabricated gas sensor were characterized in detail via field-emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis.

  • After $SnO_2$ fine powder by precipitation method, Ca as crystallization inhibitor and Pd as catalyst were added to $SnO_2$ raw material by various methods. Thick film device was fabricated on the alumina substrate by mixing ethylene glycol and such mixed powders. The sensing characteristics of the device for methane gas were investigated. The most excellent gas sensing property was shown by the thick film device fabricated by Method 3 in which Ca and Pd doped $SnO_2$ powder is prepared by mixing $SnO_2$ powder, 0.1 wt% Ca acetate and 1 wt% $PdCl_2$ in deionized water and by calcining the mixture, after $Sn(OH)_4$ is dried at $110^{\circ}C$ for 36h. The sensitivity of the sensor fabricated with $SnO_2$-0.1 wt%Ca acetate-1wt%$PdCl_2$ powder heat-treated at $700^{\circ}C$ for 1h was about 86% for 5,000 ppm methane in air at $350^{\circ}C$ of the operating temperature. Response time and recovery were also excellent.

  • A micro gas sensor for formaldehyde (HCHO) gas was fabricated by using MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) technology and the sol-gel process. The sensing materials of the $SnO_2$-ZnO system were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The crystal structure and thermal analysis of the $SnO_{2}$-ZnO were characterized by XRD and DSC-TGA. The fabricated gas sensors were tested at various gas concentrations (0.5~5.0 ppm) and different operation temperatures ($350{\sim}550^{\circ}C$). The $SnO_2$-10 mol%ZnO sensor showed the highest sensitivity ($R_s=0.24$) for 1.0 ppm-formaldehyde at $500^{\circ}C$ and response time (90% saturation time) was within 20 seconds.

  • Au/$SnO_2$ core-shell structure nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by microwave hydrothermal method, and the effect of working temperature on sensitivity of Au/$SnO_2$ core-shell NPs for CO gas was investigated. The $SnO_2$ shell layer was consisted of $SnO_2$ primary particles with 4.5 nm diameter. The response of Au/$SnO_2$ core-shell NPs for CO gas was maximized at the working temperature of $350^{\circ}C$ while the sensitivity increased with decreasing the working temperature due to the low grain size effect of $SnO_2$ NPs on the response of CO gas.

  • $SnO_2$ gas sensor for the detection DMMP, simulant of nerve gas was fabricated and its characteristics were examined. Sensing materials were $SnO_2$ added by TEX>$\alpha$-$Al_{2}O_{3}$ with 0∼20wt.% and $In_{2}O_{3}$ with 0∼3wt.% and were physically mixed each material. They were deposited by screen printing method on alumina substrate. The sensor was consisted of sensing electrode with interdigit(IDT) type in front and a heater in back side. Its dimension was 7$\times$10$\times$0.6$\textrm{mm}^2$. Crystallite size 8t phase identification, specific surface area and morphology of fabricated $SnO_2$ powders were analyzed by X-ray diffraction(XRD), surface area analyzer(BET) and by a scanning electron microscope(SEM), respectively. Sensor was measured as flow type and sensor resistance change was monitored as real time using LabVIEW program. The best sensitivities were 75% at adding 4wt.% TEX>$\alpha$-$Al_{2}O_{3}$, operating temperature $300^{\circ}C$ and 87% at adding 2wt.% $In_{2}O_{3}$, operating temperature $350^{\circ}C$ to DMMP 0.5ppm. Response and recovery times were about 1 and 3 min., respectively. Repetition measurement was very good with $\pm$3% in full scale. As a result, operating temperature was lower TEX>$\alpha$-$Al_{2}O_{3}$ than $In_{2}O_{3}$, but sensitivity was higher $In_{2}O_{3}$ than $\alpha$-$Al_{2}O_{3}$.

  • An ammonia gas sensor with high sensitivity using thick-film technology were fabricated and examined. The material for sensing the ammonia gas was the mixture of oxide semiconductor, $FeO_{x}-WO_{3}-SnO_{2}$. The sensor exhibits resistance increase upon exposure to low concentration of ammonia gas. The resistance of the sensor is decreased, on the other hand, for exposure to reducing gases such as ethyl alcohol, methane, propane and carbon monoxide. A novel method for detecting ammonia gas quite selectively utilizing a sensor array consisting of an ammonia gas sensor and a compensation element were proposed and developed. The compensation element is a Pt-doped $WO_{3}-SnO_{2}$ gas sensor which shows opposite direction of resistance change in comparison with that of the ammonia gas sensor upon exposure to ammonia gas. Excellent selectivity has been achieved using the sensor array having two sensing elements.
