  • In this paper we propose a robust version of varying coefficient models, which is based on the regularized regression with L1 regularization. We use the iteratively reweighted least squares procedure to solve L1 regularized objective function of varying coefficient model in locally weighted regression form. It provides the efficient computation of coefficient function estimates and the variable selection for given value of smoothing variable. We present the generalized cross validation function and Akaike information type criterion for the model selection. Applications of the proposed model are illustrated through the artificial examples and the real example of predicting the effect of the input variables and the smoothing variable on the output.

  • As a number of wind power generation systems have been installed in power systems in the world, frequency fluctuations due to output power variations from wind farms have become a serious problem. Battery systems have been studied for smoothing the output variations and decreasing the resulting frequency fluctuations. Among these studies, efficient design of battery systems is one of the most important subjects from a point of view of cost. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the smoothing effect between the conventional moving average method and a new method based on frequency response analysis.

  • A multi-objective optimization technique was implemented to obtain optimal topologies of the inner reinforcement for a vehicle's hood simultaneously considering the static stiffness of bending and torsion and natural frequency. In addition, a smoothing scheme was used to suppress the checkerboard patterns in the ESO method. Two models with different curvature were chosen in order to investigate the effect of curvature on the static stiffness and natural frequency of the inner reinforcement. A scale factor was employed to properly reflect the effect of each objective function. From several combinations of weighting factors, a Pareto-optimal topology solution was obtained. As the weighting factor for the elastic strain efficiency went from 1 to 0, the optimal topologies transmitted from the optimal topology of a static stiffness problem to that of a natural frequency problem. It was also found that the higher curvature model had a larger static stiffness and natural frequency than the lower curvature model. From the results, it is concluded that the ESO method with a smoothing scheme was effectively applied to topology optimization of the inner reinforcement of a vehicle's hood.

  • Purpose - We study whether the bullwhip effect is prevalent among Korean firms and how the characteristics of it differ from the ones in other countries. Design/methodology/approach - We obtained quarterly financial and operational information on KOSPI-listed firms in manufacturing, wholesale, and retail industries from 2013 to 2019. We explore the variation of the bullwhip effect across firms and validate hypotheses. Findings - First, we find that for the KOSPI-listed firms, the bullwhip effect is more prevalent compared with the production smoothing. We provide additional findings by using sub-samples of manufacturing firms, wholesaling and retailing firms, big-sized firms, small- and medium-sized firms, domestic-sales intensive firms, and export intensive firms. Second, we show that in general, the bullwhip effect of Korean firms increases with the days in inventory or the demand seasonality ratio. However, the persistence of demand shock does not affect the bullwhip effect of Korean firms. Research implications or Originality - We compare our results with those in other studies that use information on the U.S. and Chinese firms. Our findings show that factors explaining the bullwhip effect across Korean firms have similarities and differences compared with firms in the U.S. and Chinese firms.

  • The purpose of this study was to aid in the use of the digital images by edge-detect interpolation for direct digital periapical images using edge-detect interpolation. This study was performed by image processing of 20 digital periapical images; pixel replication, linear non-interpolation, linear interpolation. and edge-sensitive interpolation. The obtained results were as follows : 1. Pixel replication showed blocking artifact and serious image distortion. 2. Linear interpolation showed smoothing effect on the edge. 3. Edge-sensitive interpolation overcame the smoothing effect on the edge and showed better image.

  • B-spline function is generally used for an image interpolation because of its smoothness and continuity, but it accompanies a large amount of blurring effect. In this paper, a space-variant B-spline interpolation function is proposed through deblurring process followed by de-aliasing process. The proposed function has parametric expression and performs smoothing and edge-enhancement adaptively in the interpolation process according to local property of the image. Application of this function to image enlargement, rotation, and curve representation producted good results. Even in the presence of noise, noise smoothing effect as well as edge-enhancement were observed in the image interpolation process.

  • Bioactive compounds of Chung-pi methoxy flavonoids were isolated by column chromatography and preparative chromatography, and investigated on the smoothing effect for the tracheal smooth muscle of rats. The tracheal smooth muscles of rats were treated with acetylcholine ($ED_{50}:3${\times}$10^{-6}M$) and with chromatographic fractions. We found that six-methoxylated flavonoid (nobiletin) was the most active compound fro the smoothing effect of which the contracted tracheal smooth muscle was screened with further separated ethyl acetate fraction. This result shows how nobiletin and its analogues could be using as a promising drug of bronchial asthma.

  • The aims of this research were to investigate the preprocessing effect of spectrum data on prediction performance and to develop a robust model to predict SSC in intact apple. Spectrum data of 320 Fuji apples were measured with the on-line transmittance measurement system at the wavelength range of 550∼1100nm. Preprocess methods adopted for the tests were Savitzky Golay, MSC, SNV, first derivative and OSC. Several combinations of those methods were applied to the raw spectrum data set to investigate the relative effect of each method on the performance of the calibration model. PLS method was used to regress the preprocessed data set and the SSCs of samples, and the cross-validation was to select the optimal number of PLS factors. Smoothing and scattering corection were essential in increasing the prediction performance of PLS regression model and the OSC contributed to reduction of the number of PLS factors. The first derivative resulted in unfavorable effect on the prediction performance. MSC and SNV showed similar effect. A robust calibration model could be developed by the preprocessing combination of Savitzky Golay smoothing, MSC and OSC, which resulted in SEP= 0.507, bias=0.032 and R$^2$=0.8823.

  • Given the limitations of UI benefit and self-insurance through precautionary savings, this paper suggests a new scheme of income support for the unemployed, which offers unemployed workers not only UI benefit but also borrowings from their future pension incomes. Allowing individuals to have effective self-insurance through pension- borrowing, this scheme provides them with consumption-smoothing and reduction in risk burden while maintaining search incentives of the unemployed. Simulation study based upon household panel data in Korea suggests that a heavy reliance should be set upon self-insurance through pension-borrowings rather than upon UI benefit, even for the low-income individuals who are subsidized under UI system. This result provides us with insightful implications for a social safety net in (fast-growing) developing countries, where people cannot afford a good amount of UI benefit or of precautionary savings against unemployment although they expect their incomes to be much higher in the future. Indeed, it is consumption-smoothing effect of self-insurance through pension- borrowings, as well as its incentive-maintaining effect, that makes it a promising alternative of social safety net in developing countries.

  • Electrolytic capacitors have been widely used in power electronics system because of the features of large capacitance, small size, high-voltage, and low-cost. Electrolytic capacitors, which is most of the time affected by aging effect, plays a very important role for the power electronics system quality and reliability. Therefore it is important to estimate the parameter of an electrolytic capacitor to predict the failure. This paper proposed a novel fault diagnosis method of an electrolytic capacitor used for voltage smoothing in boost DC converter. The equivalent series resistance(ESR) of electrolytic capacitor estimated from FFT result of filtered waveform of capacitor voltage/current. Main advantage of the proposed method include circuit simplicity and easy implementation. Simulation and experimental results are shown to verify the performance of the proposed method.
