  • Single-phase heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops of R-22 were measured in smooth, horizontal copper tubes with inner diameters of 3.36 mm, 5.35 mm, 6.54 mm and 8.12 mm, respectively. The experiments were conducted in the closed loop, which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. Data are presented for the following range of variables: Reynolds from 1000 to 20000. Single-phase heat transfer coefficients increased by $10{\sim}30%$ as the inner diameter of tube was reduced and it was found that a well-known previous correlation, Gnielinski's correlation, was not suitable for the small diameter tubes. But the pressure drop in the small diameter tubes have been shown slightly deviations with Blauius' correlation. Based on an analogy between heat and mass transfer, the new heat transfer correlation is proposed to predict the experimental data successfully.

  • In this study, pool boiling performance of Turbo/B-type metal-formed tubes was investigated. Tubes with three different cavity gap width(0.04 mm, 0.07 mm, 0.1 mm) were manufactured and tested using R-11, R-123 and R-134a. Tests were conducted at two different saturation temperatures $4.4^{\circ}C$ and $26.7^{\circ}C.$ Heat flux was varied from 10 kW/m2 to 50 kW/m2. It was found that optimum gap width varied for different refrigerants. For low-pressure refrigerants such as R-11 or R-123, optimum gap width was 0.07 mm. For high-pressure refrigerant R-134a, however, the optimum value was 0.1 mm. Compared with the heat transfer performance of the smooth tube, the metal-formed tubes enhanced the heat transfer coefficients significantly - 6.5 times for R-11, 6.0 times for R-123 and 5.0 times for R-134a (at $4.4^{\circ}C$ saturation temperature and 40 kW/m2 heat flux), which are comparable with the performance of foreign products. The heat transfer coefficients of R-134a were larger than those of R-11 or R-123, and they increased as the saturation temperature increased.

  • The interest on the detonation in small tubes, which can be applied to the ignition devices of propulsion system, is increasing. However, the propagation dynamics of detonation waves in small tubes has not been investigated clearly yet. In the present experiments, propagations of detonation waves in stoichiometric propane-oxygen mixture through transparent tubes were recorded using a high speed camera and average velocities were measured as well. In terms of average velocity, there exists a transition regime where the waves show smooth transition from the normal Chapman-Jouguet(CJ) detonation to the low velocity detonation$(\sim0.5V_{CJ})$ along the decreasing initial pressure. In this transition regime, the detonation waves are highly unstable and show cyclic or intermittent longitudinal velocity fluctuation.

  • Experiments were conducted for the investigation of pressure drop inside horizontal micro-fin tubes during the condensation of R-22 and ternary refrigerant. R-407C(HFC-32/125/134a 23/25/62 wt%) as a substitute of R-22. The condenser is a double-tube and counterflow type heat exchanger which is consisted with micro-fin tubes having 60 fins with a length of 4000mm, outer diameter of 9.53mm and fin height of 0.2mm. The mass velocity varied from 102.1 to $301.0kg/(m^2{\cdot}s)$ and inlet quality was fixed as 1.0. From the experimental results. the pressure drop for R-407C was considerably higher than that for R-22. The value of PF(penalty factor) for both of refrigerants was not bigger than the ratio of micro-fin tube area to smooth tube area. Based on the experimental data. correlation was Proposed for the prediction of frictional pressure drop during the condensation of R-22 and R-407C inside horizontal micro-fin tubes.

  • Pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of HCFC123, HFC134a, HCFC22, HFC407C, HFC410A and HFC32 wre measured on a horizontal smooth tube, 26 fpi low fin tube, Turbo-B and Thermoexcel-E enhanced tubes. AN experimental apparatus was designed such that all tubes heated by cartridge heaters could be installed at the same time to save the refrigerant. Data were taken in the pool of $7^{\circ}C$ with the heat flux decreasing from 80 kW/$m^2\;to\;5kW/m^2$. Test results showed that HTCs of pure refrigerants and those of a azeotrope were greatly influenced by reduced pressure. HTCs of HFC407C were 21~25% lower than those of HCFC22 due to mass transfer resistance. For all refrigerants, enhanced tubes with sub-surface and sub-tunnels showed the largest heat transfer enhancement. Especially the largest heat enhancement was obtained for HCFC123 whose reduced pressure is the lowest among al the refrigerants tested. This indicates that either Turbo-B or Thermoexcel-E enhanced tube would be the best choice when used with a low vapor pressure refrigerant.

  • The investigation has been made into the prediction of heat exchange performance of a counter flow type double-tube condenser for natural refrigerant mixtures composed of Propane/n-Butane or Propane/i-Butane in a smooth tube and micro-fin tube. Under various heat transfer conditions, mass flux, pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient of the mixed refrigerants were calculated using a prediction method, when the length of condensing tube, total heat transfer rate, mass flux and outlet temperature of coolant were maintained constant. Also, the predicted results were compared with those of HCFC22. The results showed that the mixed refrigerants of Propane/n-Butane or Propane/i-Butane could be substituted for HCFC22, while the pressure drop and overall heat transfer coefficient of the refrigerants were evaluated together.

  • The objective of present work is to investigate experimentally the characteristics of heat transfer. A fluidized bed combustion has advantages of pollution control, fuel flexibility and excellent heat transfer. The present study investigates fundamental phenomena of bed-to-surface heat transfer in high temperature fluidized beds to improve design of immersed tube surface. The tested operating variables are bed temperature, supeficial velocity, mean size of bed material, and the rake angle of fin. Generally, heat transfer rates between the fluidized bed and immersed finned-tube are much higher than those of a smooth tube. A life time of finned-tube is generally longer than that of smooth tube.

  • Condensation heat transfer coefficients in a 7.92 mm inside diameter copper smooth tube were obtained experimentally for R22, R134a, and R410A. Working conditions were in the range of $30-40^{\circ}C$ condensation temperature, $95-410 kg/m^2s$ mass flux, and 0.15-0.85 vapor quality. The experimental data were compared with the eight existing correlations for an annular flow regime. Based on the heat-momentum analogy, a condensation heat transfer coefficients correlation for the annular flow regime was developed. The Breber et al. flow regime map was used to discern flow pattern and the Muller-Steinhagen & Heck pressure drop correlation was used for the term of the proposed correlation. The proposed correlation provided the best predicted performance compared to the eight existing correlations and its root mean square deviation was less than 8.7%.

  • Carbon Nano Tubes could be either metallic or semi-conducting in nature, depending on their diameter. Its photocatalytic behavior has given an impetus to use it as an anti-microbial agent. More than 95% Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria got killed when exposed to Carbon Nano Tubes for 30 minutes in presence of sunlight. Carbon Nano Tubes are supposed to have smooth surface on to which it accumulates positive charges when exposed to light. The surface that is non illuminated has negative charge. At the cellular level microorganisms produce negative charges on the cell membrane, Therefore damaging effect of multi walled carbon nano tubes (exposed to light) on the microorganisms is possible. In this paper, photo catalytic killing of microbes by multi walled carbon nano tubes is reported. Killing was due to damage in the cell membrane, as seen in SEM micrographs. Moreover biochemical analysis of membrane as well as total cellular proteins by SDS PAGE showed that there was denaturation of membrane proteins as well as total proteins of both the microbes studied. The killed microbes that showed a decrease in number of protein bands (i.e. due to breaking down of proteins) also showed an increase in level of free amino acids in microbes. This further confirmed that proteins got denatured or broken down into shorter units of amino acids. Increased level of free amino acids was recorded in both the microbes treated with multi walled carbon nano tubes and sunlight.

  • Enhanced tubes are used widely in the heat exchangers of absorption chillers. In regenerators, corrugated, ribbed or floral tubes are commonly used. In this study, the tube-side heat transfer coefficients and friction factors of enhanced tubes were obtained experimentally using the Wilson Plot method. The results showed that the heat transfer coefficients and the friction factors were the largest for the corrugated tube, followed by the ribbed tube. The heat transfer coefficients and friction factors of the floral tube matched those of the smooth tube within 4%, which suggests that the heat transfer and friction characteristics of the floral tube may be accounted for properly by the hydraulic diameter. The B(e+) and g(e+) were obtained from the experimental data of the corrugated and ribbed tube. The B(e+) and g(e+) of the corrugated tube matched those of the existing correlation within 20%. The present results may be used for an assessment of the heat transfer and friction characteristics of the enhanced tubes for regenerators.
