  • In this study it is intended to review the moving characteristics of smoke by performing visualization for calculation of the optimal smoke exhaust air volume in case a fire occurs in tunnels where transverse ventilation is applied, and to obtain basic data necessary for design of the smoke exhaust systems by deriving optimal smoke exhaust operational conditions under various conditions. As a result of this study, if it was assumed 0 critical velocity in the tunnel, the smoke exhaust air volume was limited within 250 meter in the road-tunnel disaster prevention indicator and the exhaust efficiency was from 55.1% to 95.8% in the result of this study. In case of oversized exhaust ports, the generated smoke is more than the case of uniform exhaust. When the critical velocity in the tunnel is 1.75 m/s and 2.5 m/s, the optimal smoke exhaust air volume has to be more than $173\;m^3/s$, $236\;m^3/s$ for the distance of the moving smoke which can limit the distance to 250 m.

  • Recently, the tightening of available crude oil supplies has resulted in the development of intense consciousness for saving fuels. At the same time, some research programs have been launched to secure substitute energy sources for petroleum-derived fuels, and to reduce unhealthy products, such as CO, HC, NOx and smoke. To keep up with these trends in society, the regulation affecting diesel smoke may be greatly strengthened in a short time. In not too distant future, LPG and LNG are the most hopeful substitute fuels for automobile and truck uses. This paper discusses how to use such gaseous fuels in a diesel engine, and how to find out introducing these fuels affect the engine performance.

  • In this study, fire simualtion was performed to examine the necessity of smoke control system in the tunnel fire. The heat release rate was set to 5 MW and 20MW, and the visibility was measured at 1.8 m, which is the breathing limit, when there is no jet fan. Through this, it was confirmed that 5 MW did not affect the visibility even without the jet fan, and in the case of 20 MW, a jet fan was required to secure the visibility. The visibility was measured at the same location by installing the jet fan, and the simulation was performed by reducing the design volume flow rate of 8.5 m3/s by 80% and 50%, respectively. As a result, it was confirmed that sufficient visibility was secured when the design flow rate and 80% were reduced.

  • Acrylamide has been found in many foods. Acrylamide in foodstuffs were analyzed by a GC/MS after bromination of acrylamide or by a LC/MS for underivatized acylamide. Time consuming and laborious clean up procedures is applied for the purification of the extract, in these methods. In this study, a simple and fast method without clean up step for the analysis of acrylamide in mainstream cigarette smoke was developed by using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) and the effects of tobacco leaf constituents on acrylamide content was observed. The analysis of acrylamide in mainstream cigarette smoke started to collect TPM (total particulate matter) from smoking and to extract by 0.1 % acetic acid solution and then to detect by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry using electrospray in the positive mode. The recovery of acrylamide in 2R4F reference cigarette was 98 % and the reproducibility was 2.5 % and the limit of detection was 1.6 ng/mL. Reducing sugars and amino acids are considered to be main precursors of acrylamide in foodstuffs. Cut tobacco contain substantial amounts of reducing sugars and amino acid which may be explained the occurrence of acrylamide in mainstream cigarette smoke. The effects of reducing sugars and total nitrogen studied in an experiment with a various tobacco types. This result indicated that reducing sugars are not limiting factor for acrylamide formation, but the level of acrylamide in cigarette smoke was significantly correlated with the total nitrogen contents.

  • Hydrogen cyanide(HCN), formed from pyrolysis of various nitrogenous compounds such as protein, amino acids and nitrate in tobacco, is present in both the particulate phase and vapor phase of cigarette smoke. Typically the determination of HCN in cigarette smoke has been done through colorimetric and electrochemical techniques, such as fluorescence spectrometry, UV-spectrophotometry (UV), continuous flow analyzer (CFA), capillary GC-ECD and ion chromatography (IC). Most of these techniques are known to be time-consuming and some of them lack specificity or sensitivity. The available results from both our laboratory and reported literatures for 2R4F Kentucky reference cigarette, smoked under ISO condition, show a relatively wide variation ranging from 100 to 120 ug/cig of HCN. Especially, the precision and accuracy of the analytical results of HCN tend to get worse in low tar cigarettes and under intense smoking condition. In this paper, a more optimized analytical methods than previous ones are suggested. This method shows lower detection limit and has improved precision and accuracy, so it is applicable for wide tar level cigarettes under intense smoking condition as well as under ISO smoking condition. Important features of this method are improved sample collection and quantification systems such as the number of trapping units, volume, temperature and type of trapping solution. To avoid volatilization loss of HCN in analyzing mainstream smoke, it is highly recommended that pH values of trapping solutions should be maintained over 11 and cold traps should be used in collecting mainstream smoke.

  • Medium and high-resolution optical satellites have proven their effectiveness in detecting wildfire areas. However, smoke plumes generated by wildfire scatter visible light incidents on the surface, thereby interrupting accurate monitoring of the area where wildfire occurs. Therefore, a technology to extract smoke in advance is required. Deep learning technology is expected to improve the accuracy of smoke extraction, but the lack of training datasets limits the application. However, for clouds, which have a similar property of scattering visible light, a large amount of training datasets has been accumulated. The purpose of this study is to develop a smoke extraction technique using deep learning, and the limits due to the lack of datasets were overcome by using a cloud dataset on transfer learning. To check the effectiveness of transfer learning, a small-scale smoke extraction training set was made, and the smoke extraction performance was compared before and after applying transfer learning using a public cloud dataset. As a result, not only the performance in the visible light wavelength band was enhanced but also in the near infrared (NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR). Through the results of this study, it is expected that the lack of datasets, which is a critical limit for using deep learning on smoke extraction, can be solved, and therefore, through the advancement of smoke extraction technology, it will be possible to present an advantage in monitoring wildfires.

  • This study was carried out to determine the analytical methods for heterocyclic amines(HAs) of the tobacco smoke by LC/MS/MS. HAs have been found in pyrolysate of protein and cooked food including protein, were known the Sugimura compound. HAs content of the smoke were known to exist very low ppb level. Especially, some of HAs are mutagenic and carcinogenic compounds. In according to IARC, the toxicity of N-heterocyclic amines classified IARC class 2A or 2B group. Precursors of these compounds are glutamic acid, protein and free amino acids including tryptophan, therefore, the precursors have been proved in cooked food continuously. This study was investigate multiple analysis methods for HAs and HAs contents of some commercial products. In this study, we used the linear type smoking machine for HAs analysis. At the ISO conditions, mainstream smoke was collected on cambridge filter pad, and then cambridge filter pad was extracted by 0.1% acetic acid. The extracted solution were passed cation exchange SPE cartridge to remove matrix, samples were analyzed using LC/MS/MS on MRM mode. From the result that optimized this methods, the correlation coefficient(R) of the individual compounds were good linearity over 0.999, recovery rate over 96% and the limit of detection were good values between 0.06 to 0.37 ng/mL, In addition, HAs content of some commercial products were in range of 0.02 to 43.8 ng/cig.

  • Experiments were conducted to evaluate the hazard risks of vehicle fires. Sensors were strategically placed in passenger cars to determine the temperature, propagation rate and direction of flame. The life safety hazard evaluations such as smoke and gas analysis were included. An important ignition position was performed in the engine compartment. The effects of different ignition positions and the opening of door glasses were also reviewed. The experimental results indicate that the maximum temperature when a vehicle burns varies commonly from 90$0^{\circ}C$ -100$0^{\circ}C$. The flame reaches in the face of a driver about 6-7minutes and the windshield glass breaks about 10 minutes after the ignition in the engine compartment of vehicle. And the smoke and gas concentrations reached the limit of human inhalation after 13-14 minutes. Especially the concentrations of carbon monoxide exceeded the TWA(50 ppm) during short time after ignition in cases of all experiments.

  • As a series of studies on improving quality of seasoned-dried Pacific saury, storage stability of seasoned-dried saury treated with liquid smoke (T2 product) was examined during storage at ambient temperature $(19\pm5^{\circ}C)$, comparing with control (C, seasoning only) and T1 (treatment of $0.05\%$ Rosemary as a antioxidant). The histamine contents (15.33-32.21mg/100g) of 3 seasoned-dried products were much lower than tolerance limit of intake during 80 days of storage. The water activity of 3 seasoned-dried products was in range of 0.6920.735. The pH of T2 showed relatively lower than the others during storage. The POV of T2 was slightly higher until 30 days, but was lower after 45 days compared with Tl. The TBA value and viable cell count of T2 were the lowest among the samples during storage. The color values of 3 seasoned-dried products were not significantly different during storage. The sensory scores of T2 was the highest than those of T1 and C during storage. Therefore, liquid smoking method was a useful technique to extend shelf-life and retain good sensory quality of seasoned-dried Pacific saury.
