An Experimental Study on Smoke Generation of Rubber Floor for Railway Vehicle (철도차량용 고무바닥재의 연기발생에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, we have performed the Cone Calorimeter test and Smoke density test in accordance with ISO 5660-1 and ASTM E662 respectively to check the smoke production characteristics of rubber flooring materials for railway vehicle. Early in the ASTM E662 test, more smoke was produced in the flame mode test than non-flame mode test, but later more smoke was produced in non-flame mode test. The correlation($R^2$) between TSR(Total Smoke Release) by ISO 5660-1 and Ds(Specific Optical Density) by ASTM E662 Flame mode was 0.782. The $R^2$ between TSR by ISO 5660-1 and Ds by ASTM E662 Non-flame was 0.930.

  • Kinds of Sound & Thermal Insulator are being used for materials of railroad vehicles as a barrier of beat and noise. Glass Wool, PE foam, PP foam are such kinds of materials. In case of fire, it shows various combustion properties. In this study, we compared the Smoke Density of the Rubber Foam Insulator by test between Cone-Calorimeter and Smoke Density-Chamber. The results showed that the Rubber Foam Insulator had an important role in the insulator thickness and the test method, We forecast the smoke density by test between Cone-Calorimeter and Smoke Density-Chamber.

  • In this study, we measured the smoke density characteristics to find the fire risk of Wood-Plastic composites (WPCs) which are one of spotlighting materials for landscape architecture and residential construction material with the cone calorimeter tester (by ISO 5660-2) and the smoke density tester (by ASTM E 662). In addition, the identical test was implemented to compare the smoke density characteristics between the red pine and the antiseptic wood. The result of cone calorimeter test showed that emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and total smoke production rate of WPCs were higher than those of red pine and antiseptic wood. And the result of smoke density test showed that maximum specific optical smoke density(Dm) of WPCs was higher than that of red pine and antiseptic wood as well.

  • In this study we reported the Smoke Density test method of interior panel of railroad passenger car and investigated the specific smoke density(Ds) by NBS smoke chamber to the variance of some test conditions. First we compared the result of Ds from ISO 5659-2 with that from ASTM E662 for same phenol FRP Secondary studied the Ds value to the variance of resin type and to the variance of specimen shape.

  • Due to the damage which is caused by with the smoke, in the analysis statistics of a fire accident smoke is becoming the important evaluation index of fire quality. We must follow the procedures to use interior material for railway car as stated the Safety regulation for the urban railway car. In this study, we compared the Smoke Density of the train seat by test between Cone-Calorimeter and Smoke Density-Chamber. The results showed that the smoke density by test between Cone-Calorimeter and Smoke Density-Chamber is visible a similar tendency.

Evaluation of Smoke Density and Noxious Gas for Phenol Foam Insulation (페놀 폼 단열재의 연기밀도 및 가스유해성 평가)

  • The smoke density and noxious gas for phenol foam and polyurethane foam were measured according to test methods in ASTM E 662 and KS F 2271. It was observed that phenol foam had the possibility of application for sandwich panel and board compared with polyurethane foam. In the experimental results, phenol foam showed comparatively excellent property than polyurethane foam in smoke density and noxious gas. The polyurethane foam showed comparatively high smoke density and didn't meet the evaluation standard of noxious gas in KS F 2271. From the experimental results of smoke density and noxious gas, it can be said that phenol foam has both comparatively good safety and high possibility of application than polyurethane foam in the building fire of sandwich panel structure because of lower smoke density and noxious gas.

  • 17 kinds of fire resistant paint which are currently used were painted on the MDF, to find flame resistance performance and smoking characteristics according to principal ingredient and characteristics of fire resistant paint. 45 degree combustion test and smoke density test were conducted to investigate the flame resistance performance and smoking characteristics. According to the 45 degree combustion test, acrylic resin type fire resistant paint showed the most excellent fire resistance performance. And the water soluble fire resistant paint showed better fire resistance performance compare to the solvent soluble paints. Also gloss paint showed better fire resistance performance than the flat paint. Based on the smoke density test, the smoke generation of fire resistant treated specimen of acrylic resin type was least. And the water soluble fire resistant paint generate little smoke than solvent soluble fire resistant paint.

  • This study aims to measure a smoke density and velocity by using the PIV method in case a fire occurs in tunnels. By doing so, this will estimate a critical velocity, examine its appropriateness, and present the basic materials necessary for designing a smoke control equipment. For this study, a visualization test was conducted based on the 1/20 miniature of a real tunnel according to the Froude scaling. As a part of basic experiments, a correlation between smoke density and brightness was analyzed here, and a critical velocity was estimated on the condition that a fire breaks out in tunnels. As a result, this study finds that there is a correlation between smoke density and brightness within a range of 100% to 30% transmittance, from which a quantitative smoke density can be obtained. The study also suggests that a critical velocity calculated from the Kennedy formula shows about 10% difference from that estimated in the test.

  • We have carried out the test using the cone calorimeter and the smoke density chamber to evaluate the characteristics of the combustion for the car interior materials passed horizontal burning test. We have analysed many parameters related to fire hazard. These parameters are the ignition time, the heat release rate, the maximum average rate of heat emission, the flashover propensity and specific optical density. There was a significant difference in HRR and optical smoke density. The HRR was $185{\sim}446kW/m^2$ and optical smoke density was $119{\sim}1207$. Only horizontal burning test was performed to evaluate the fire hazard for the car interior materials.
