A comparative Study for dispersion model in evacuation plan by using MAS-based evacuation simulation (MAS 기반 피난시뮬레이션을 이용한 분산대피 비교 연구)

  • Smoke is one of the most critical factor when escaping from the fire since it reduces visibility and interrupts finding emergency exit lights. Therefore, it is recommended that an evacuation simulation program should incorporate the smoke factor. In addition, it is suggested that the program should include not only the unilateral damage by the smoke but also the detour evacuation by risk communication. In this study, MAS (Multi Agent System)-based simulation program which incorporates the reduced walking speed by smoke and adopts the dispersion evacuation logic during escaping from the fire. To make comparison, a commercial evacuation program, Pathfinder was used. It was found that the simulation results of MAS (Multi Agent System)-based program is better than Pathfinder in terms of safe evacuation. It means that evacuation simulation need a additional evaluation categories that include not only quick evacuation time but also safe evacuee number.

How Visual-Field Obstruction from Fire Smoke Influences a Resident's Necessary Time to Reach Fire Escape and Evacuation Route in a High-rise Apartment Housing (연기발생으로 인한 시야장애가 초고층 공동주택 거주자의 피난계단실 진입시간과 피난경로에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to know how visual-field obstruction from fire smoke influences a resident's necessary time to reach fire escape and evacuation movement in a high-rise apartment housing. Generally, fire smoke not only gives visual-field obstruction and breath troubles to residents but interrupts their evacuation behavior. If a fire smoke layer is formed in the core department when evacuee enters at the evacuation staircase until, residents will be made to undergo a range of vision obstacle. In order to set a situation like that, participants wore eye bandage which had been made especially before the experiment. Also as a comparative standard, through no.1442 Japanese construction ministry notices about the building evacuation safety verification method, this study calculated smoke layer's dissent time and evacuation time. Then to compare with the former, the participants without an eye bandage joined a experiment once again. This study has understood how fire smoke effects on one's evacuation delay by analyzing residents' evacuation time to reach the staircase and movement route, however, in this study a toxic gas is not considered because it might threaten participants not to breathe.

A Numerical Study on the Effects of the Smoke Exhaustion on Safe Evacuation in Emergency Situations during Fires on Ships

  • Sometimes, an evacuation should be executed from a ship for many reasons. This study considers on emergency evacuation on fire in a ship, one of the many reasons for evacuation. Due to the characteristic of fire, the most loss of life is known to be caused by suffocation resulted by smoke. To reduce the suffocation by smoke, the time available for evacuation should be improved for the higher survival rate of crews. In this study, crews' survival times and Evacuation time are analyzed quantitatively in during fire in the same sealed space in two different cases of the natural ventilation and the forced ventilation.

  • Since subway fire disaster at Daegu, Korea smoke control system and passengers evacuation distance has been focused to reform. Existing smoke control facilities need to expand volume of ventilation capacity however, the complicate subway station structure can hardly react dispersion of smokes from massive subway cabin fire. Smoke flow at platform level move upward thought vertical stairway and passengers evacuation goes with same direction. The victims of evacuees from subway station fire mainly due to exposure of heat radiation and smoke. The study demonstration the effect of downward evacuates stairway system by separating evacuation route to smoke movement pass way including saving times of evacuation.

  • In this study, it was analyzed by a numerical analysis that plan/design considerations for ensuring the spectator safety of large arena audiences in a fire emergency evacuation plan. The latest issue, the 'performance-based design', fire and evacuation plan is important. But nowadays 'Specification-based design' is in common. In evacuation simulation, congestion of exit and aisle is ignored because only evacuation time of large-space is mainly analyzed. In smoke flow,'smoke filling effect' tends to be overrated. From now on, when design a field house, it is needed not 'smoke filling effect' and 'large-space evacuation' analysis, but analyzing 'whole building evacuation time' for ensuring fire evacuation safety of spectator.

  • This study was performed to analysis the influence of smoke alarm detector on evacuation safety in housing fire. The analysis was conducted by CFAST fire simulation program and building EXODUS evacuation program. The effects of the earlier response time on evacuation safety were investigated by using evacuation simulation program with several steps of different response time and smoke alarm activation time for 4 occupants. The smoke detecter was activated 37.1 second after fire. The first two mortuary were occurred for 170 seconds of response time at the end of living room near exit. But for the 37.1 seconds of response time 4 occupants evacuated safely. From this study, the fire alarm detector is more important for safety evacuation in housing fire.

  • Heat/smoke detectors are installed in most subway platforms in Korea to detect fire. Subway platform is divided by smoke-control zones for efficient smoke-control. Once the detectors detect heat or smoke, the smoke-control ventilation system in the platform and concourse is activated according to the smoke-control ventilation mode. Smoke-control mode during fires in Korean subway platforms is that the smoke zones operate by exhausting smoke while other zones in the platform and in the concourse which is the upper floor of the platform operate by supplying air or stopping any ventilation. This study is conducted to evaluate performance of passengers' evacuation for various smoke control modes in the subway station. Distribution of smoke and heat due to fire on the platform is analyzed by using Fire Dynamics Simulator(FDS V 4.06) of NIST. Various smoke-control ventilation modes and locations of fire are considered. Evacuation and movement of passengers within the platform is simulated by building EXODUS V.4.0.

  • Human and material damage can be reduced if the risk is evaluated by engineering analysis of fire combustion products, smoke concentration, and smoke movement speed in the event of a fire in apartment houses and officetels. In this study, a lot of research on related safety evaluation in the basement needs to be studied and reflected in design, so experimental research was conducted to analyze the flow of smoke through computer simulation and provide analysis data through evacuation safety evaluation. First of all, the five-story underground parking lot subject to simulation has a large floor area, which is advantageous for improving evacuation safety performance, but it uses temperature detectors to increase detection time and fire spread speed. Second, it was analyzed that the evacuation time at all evacuation ports did not exceed the evacuation time, and as the time from the start of evacuation to the evacuation time was 216.9% compared to the travel time, it was evaluated that the safety performance of the evacuation was secured. Third, the above simulation results are a comprehensive safety evaluation based on the non-operation of fire extinguishing facilities in the fire room to increase safety, which means that smoother evacuation safety performance can be secured by linking fire extinguishing facilities.

  • In this paper some sets of numerical simulations for passenger evacuation in a fire occurred underground station under various smoke-control ventilation modes. Passenger evacuation flows are calculated by EXODUS program. As input data for EXODUS program, distributions of temparature, smoke and toxicity due to fire in the underground station are evaluated by Fire Dyanamic Simulator (FDS).
