This paper deals with civil infrastructures in general, sensor and smart structure technology, and smart steel structures in particular. Smart structures technology, an integrated engineering field comprising sensor technology, structural control, smart materials and structural health monitoring, could dramatically transform and revolutionize the design, construction and maintenance of civil engineering structures. The central core of this technology is sensor and sensor networks that provide the essential data input in real time for condition assessment and decision making. Sensors and robust monitoring algorithms that can reliably detect the occurrence, location, and severity of damages such as crack and corrosion in steel structures will lead to increased levels of safety for civil infrastructure, and may significantly cut maintenance or repair cost through early detection. The emphasis of this paper is on sensor technology with a potential use in steel structures.

SMART Frame is a composite precast concrete structure system to deliver the advantages of both steel frame and reinforced concrete. Many studies have established to date that SMART Frame is more advantageous than conventional frame-type structure in terms of structural stability, constructability, economic viability as well as reduction of construction schedule. However, such studies have focused primarily on wall-type or flat slab-type apartment housing structures, failing to include Rahmen structures in their scope. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the benefits of potential application of SMART Frame to RC Rahmen structures. As the structural stability and constructability of SMART Frame is already proven, this study reviews its benefits from the perspective of cost reduction. Conclusion of this study will be used subsequently in predicting the benefits of SMART Frame when it is adapted to RC Rahmen structures.

This research is concerned with the active vibration controller design for smart structures by a modified LQG controller. The smart structure is defined as the structure equipped with smart actuators and sensors. Various analog and digital control, techniques aimed for the piezoceramic sensors and actuators have been proposed for the active vibration control of smart structures. In this paper, the modified LQG controller is developed for the active vibration suppression of smart structures to implement the predefined decay rate on modal displacements. The proposed modified LQG controller proved its effectiveness by experiments.
The smart sensor technology has opened new horizons for assessing and monitoring structural health of civil infrastructure. Smart sensor's unique features such as onboard computation, wireless communication, and cost effectiveness can enable a dense network of sensors that is essential for accurate assessment of structural health in large-scale civil structures. While most research efforts to date have been focused on realizing wireless smart sensor networks (WSSN) on bridge structures, relatively less attention is paid to applying this technology to buildings. This paper presents a decentralized damage detection using the WSSN for building structures. An existing flexibility-based damage detection method is extended to be used in the decentralized computing environment offered by the WSSN and implemented on MEMSIC's Imote2 smart sensor platform. Numerical simulation and laboratory experiment are conducted to validate the WSSN for decentralized damage detection of building structures.

To date, a smart base isolation system has been developed in high seismicity region such as Japan, USA etc. Smart base isolation systems developed for structures in high seismicity region cannot directly applied to structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity such as Korea. Therefore, problems that occur by applying the smart base isolation system developed for the structures in high seismicity region to the structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity have been investigated in this study. To this end, a spacial arch structure was used as an example structure and MR dampers and low damping elastomeric bearings were used to compose a smart base isolation system. Artificial earthquakes were used for ground motions in regions of high and low-to-moderate seismicity. Based on numerical simulation results, it has been known that the capacity of smart base isolation system for the regions of low-to-moderate seismicity should be carefully designed because the base isolation effects of the smart base isolation system for high seismicity region is deteriorated when it is applied to the structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity.

A smart connective control system was invented recently for coupling control of adjacent buildings. Previous studies on this topic focused on development of control algorithm for the smart connective control system and design method of control device. Usually, a smart control devices are applied to building structures after structural design. However, because structural characteristics of building structure with control devices changes, a iterative design is required for optimal design. To defeat this problem, an integrated optimal design method for a smart connective control system and connected buildings was proposed. For this purpose, an artificial seismic load was generated for control performance evaluation of the smart coupling control system. 20-story and 12-story adjacent buildings were used as example structures and an MR (magnetorheological) damper was used as a smart control device to connect adjacent two buildings. NSGA-II was used for multi-objective integrated optimization of structure-smart control device. Numerical simulation results show the integrated optimal design method proposed in this study can provide various optimal designs for smart connective control system and connected buildings presenting good control performance.

Piezoelectric materials have become the most attractive functional materials for sensors and actuators in smart structures because they can directly convert mechanical energy to electrical energy and vise versa. They have excellent electromechanical coupling characteristics and excellent frequency response. In this article, the research activities and achievements on the applications of piezoelectric materials in smart structures in China, including vibration control, noise control, energy harvesting, structural health monitoring, and hysteresis control, are introduced. Special attention is given to the introduction of semi-active vibration suppression based on a synchronized switching technique and piezoelectric fibers with metal cores for health monitoring. Such mechanisms are relatively new and possess great potential for future applications in aerospace engineering.
Structural health monitoring (SHM) is an application area of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) which usually needs high data communication rate to transfer a large amount of monitoring data. Traditional sink node can only process data from one communication channel at the same time because of the single radio chip structure. The sink node constitutes a bottleneck for constructing a high data rate SHM application giving rise to a long data transfer time. Multi-channel communication has been proved to be an efficient method to improve the data throughput by enabling parallel transmissions among different frequency channels. This paper proposes an 8-radio integrated sink node design method based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and the time synchronization mechanism for the multi-channel network based on the proposed sink node. Three experiments have been performed to evaluate the data transfer ability of the developed multi-radio sink node and the performance of the time synchronization mechanism. A high data throughput of 1020Kbps of the developed sink node has been proved by experiments using IEEE.805.15.4.

There has been an increasing interest in the construction of smart buildings that can actively monitor and react to their surroundings. The capacity of these intelligent structures to precisely predict and respond to deflection is a crucial feature that guarantees both their structural soundness and efficiency. Conventional techniques for determining deflection often depend on intricate mathematical models and computational simulations, which may be time- and resource-consuming. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms have become a potent tool for anticipating and controlling deflection in intelligent structures in response to these difficulties. The term "deflection-aware smart structures" in this sense refers to constructions that have AI algorithms installed that continually monitor and analyses deflection data in order to proactively detect any problems and take appropriate action. These structures anticipate deflection across a range of operating circumstances and environmental factors by using cutting-edge AI approaches including deep learning, reinforcement learning, and neural networks. AI systems are able to predict real-time deflection with high accuracy by using data from embedded sensors and actuators. This capability enables the systems to identify intricate patterns and linkages. Intelligent buildings have the potential to self-correct in order to reduce deflection and maximize performance. In conclusion, the development of deflection-aware smart structures is a major stride forward for structural engineering and has enormous potential to enhance the performance, safety, and dependability of designed systems in a variety of industries.
