In Korea, 22.9kV 50MVA HTS (High Temperature Superconducting) cables and 630A/3kA hybrid SFCLs (Superconducting Fault Current Limiters) have been or are being developed by LS Cable, LS Industrial System, and Korea Electric Power Research Institute. They will be installed at Icheon 154kV Substation for real-power-distribution-system operation in 2010. This paper proposes specification of current limiting resistor/reactor for the SFCL and fault current condition of the HTS cable for applying the superconducting devices to Korean power distribution system, from the viewpoint of power system protection.
A smart grid is a modernized electrical grid that uses information about the behaviors of suppliers and consumers in an automated fashion to improve the efficiency, reliability, economics, and sustainability of the production and distribution of electricity. In the operation of a smart grid, demand side management (DSM) plays an important role in allowing customers to make informed decisions regarding their energy consumption. In addition, it helps energy providers reduce peak load demand and reshapes the load profile. In this paper, we propose a new DSM scheduling scheme that makes use of the day-ahead pricing strategy. Based on the Rubinstein-Stahl bargaining model, our pricing strategy allows consumers to make informed decisions regarding their power consumption, while reducing the peak-to-average ratio. With a simulation study, it is demonstrated that the proposed scheme can increase the sustainability of a smart grid and reduce overall operational costs.
The applications of Distributed Generation (DG) in a smart distribution grid environment are widely employed especially for power balancing and supporting demand responses. Using these applications can have both positive and negative impacts on the distribution system. The sizing and location of their installations are the issues that should be taken into consideration to gain the maximum benefit from them when considering the economic aspects. This paper presents an application of the Bat Algorithm (BA) for the optimal sizing and siting of DG in a smart distribution power system in order to maximize the Benefit to Cost Ratio (BCR), subjected to system constraints including real and reactive power generation, line and transformer loading, voltage profile, energy losses, fault level as well as DG operating limits. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology and the impact of considering economic issues on DG placement, a simplify 9-bus radial distribution system of the Provincial Electricity Authority of Thailand (PEA) is selected for the computer simulation to explore the benefit of the optimal DG placement and the performance of the proposed approach.

A considerable amount of research material discussing designs and properties of High Temperature Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (HTS FCL) is available. However, a shortage of research concerning positioning of HTS FCL in power grid is felt. In this paper a feasibility study of HTS FCL positioning in Smart Grid through simulation analysis is carried out. A complete power network (including generation, transmission and distribution) is modeled in Simulink / SimPowerSystems. A generalized HTS FCL is also designed by integrating Simulink and SimPowerSystem blocks. The distribution network of the model has a wind turbine attached to it forming a micro grid. Three phase fault have been simulated along with placing FCL models at key points of the distribution grid. It is observed that distribution grid, having distributed generation sources attached to it, must not have a single FCL located at the substation level. Optimized HTS FCL location regarding the best fault current contribution from wind turbine has been determined through simulation analysis.

Sharing power data between electrical power grids is crucial in energy management. The multi-agent approach has been applied in various applications to improve the development of complex systems by making them both independent and collaborative. The smart grid is one of the most intricate systems that requires a higher level of independence, reliability, protection, and adaptability to user requests. In this paper, a multi-agent system is utilized to share knowledge and tackle challenges in smart grids. The shared information is used to make decisions that aid in power distribution management within the grid and with other networks. The proposed multi-agent mechanism improves the reliability of the power system by providing the necessary information at critical times. The results indicate that the multi-agent system operates efficiently and promptly, making it a highly promising candidate for smart grid management.

At present, the smart grid has become one of the indispensable infrastructures in people's lives. As a commonly used communication method, wireless communication is gradually, being widely used in smart grid systems due to its convenient deployment and wide range of serious challenges to security. For the insecurity of the schemes based on large integer factorization and discrete logarithm problem in the quantum environment, an identity-based key management scheme for smart grid over lattice is proposed. To assure the communication security, through constructing intra-cluster and inter-cluster multi-hop routing secure mechanism. The time parameter and identity information are introduced in the relying phase. Through using the symmetric cryptography algorithm to encrypt improve communication efficiency. Through output the authentication information with probability, the protocol makes the private key of the certification body no relation with the distribution of authentication information. Theoretic studies and figures show that the efficiency of keys can be authenticated, so the number of attacks, including masquerade, reply and message manipulation attacks can be resisted. The new scheme can not only increase the security, but also decrease the communication energy consumption.

In this paper, a miniaturized distribution line was experimentally made. The smart grid distribution system was modeled by analyzing the distribution system, and a miniaturized micro three phase distribution system recloser was designed. The micro recloser was designed as a sensor part, a main part and a relay part, and the main part was designed to cut off the fault current by determining the fault from the input current based on the DSP. Finally, based on the results of the modeling, the micro three phase power distribution line and the micro three phase recloser were experimentally fabricated, and the basic making technology of the miniaturized micro smart grid was obtained through the making process.

The authors have been discussed the optimal voltage regulation method and on-line real time method using artificial neural networks in the distribution system interconnected with Distributed Generation and Storage(DSG) systems. However, these methods have difficulty in dealing with the random load variations and operation characteristics of a number of DSG systems. To overcome these problems, this paper shows the basic concepts of smart grid system which is considered as one of the power delivery system in the near future and presents an evaluation method on the impacts of customer voltages by the operation of smart grid system. The smart grid system can change the system configuration in a flexible manner by using the static switches and offer the different power qualities in power services through the power quality control centers.

The current electricity networks will undergo profound changes in the years to come to be able to meet the growing demand for electricity, while minimizing the costs of consumers and producers, etc. The electricity network of tomorrow or even the intelligent « Smart Grids » network will be the convergence of two networks: the electricity network and the telecommunications network. In this context falls our work which aims to study the impact of the integration of energy decentralization into the electricity network. In this sense, we have implemented a new smart grid model where several coexisting suppliers can exchange information with consumers in real time. In addition, a new approach to energy distribution optimization has been developed. The simulation results prove the effectiveness of this approach in improving energy exchange and minimizing consumer purchase costs and line losses.
After an occurrence of a fault in any distribution system, it is desired to limit the effects of the fault to smallest possible area and restore the un-faulty areas as soon as possible. Due the advancements in communication technologies, this task can be achieved in multiple efficient ways. In order to decrease the restoration time in the Smart Grid Distribution Management System (SDMS) a communication based algorithm is proposed in this paper, in which the restoration can be done during reclosing. This paper also analyzes various communication failures with power failures cases including the entire network of communication failures. Results of all these cases have been verified by doing simulations.
