  • This paper presents vibration mode control of a smart plate containing electro-rheological (ER) fluid between elastic face layers. Following the composition of a silicone oil-based ER fluid, the ER fluid-embedded plate partitioned into four sections is constructed. Then, an extensive modal test is experimentally carried out to identify field-dependent modal parameters such as mode shapes and natural frequencies of the structure with respect to different are subjected to electric fields. The distilled results from the experiment exhibit that the ER fluid can be effectively employed in a continuous fashion to tune modal behaviors of the distributed parameter systems,

  • The present study analyzed free vibration of the three-layered micro annular/circular plate which its core and face sheets are made of saturated porous materials and FG-CNTRCs, respectively. The structure is subjected to magneto-electric fields and magneto-electro-mechanical pre loads. Mechanical properties of the porous core and also FG-CNTRC face sheets are varied through the thickness direction. Using dynamic Hamilton's principle, the motion equations based on MCS and FSD theories are derived and solved via GDQ as an efficient numerical method. Effect of different parameters such as pores distributions, porosity coefficient, pores compressibility, CNTs distribution, elastic foundation, multi-physical pre loads, small scale parameter and aspect ratio of the plate are investigated. The findings of this study can be useful for designing smart structures such as sensor and actuator.

  • A four-variable shear deformation refined plate theory has been proposed for dynamic characteristics of smart plates made of porous magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded (MEE-FG) materials with various boundary conditions by using an analytical method. Magneto-electro-elastic properties of FGM plate are supposed to vary through the thickness direction and are estimated through the modified power-law rule in which the porosities with even and uneven type are approximated. Pores possibly occur inside functionally graded materials (FGMs) due the result of technical problems that lead to creation of micro-voids in these materials. The variation of pores along the thickness direction influences the mechanical properties. The governing differential equations and boundary conditions of embedded porous FGM plate under magneto-electrical field are derived through Hamilton's principle based on a four-variable tangential-exponential refined theory which avoids the use of shear correction factors. An analytical solution procedure is used to achieve the natural frequencies of embedded porous FG plate supposed to magneto-electrical field with various boundary condition. A parametric study is led to carry out the effects of material graduation exponent, coefficient of porosity, magnetic potential, electric voltage, elastic foundation parameters, various boundary conditions and plate side-to-thickness ratio on natural frequencies of the porous MEE-FG plate. It is concluded that these parameters play significant roles on the dynamic behavior of porous MEE-FG plates. Presented numerical results can serve as benchmarks for future analyses of MEE-FG plates with porosity phases.

  • Vehicle License Plate Recognition is one of the approaches for transportation and traffic safety networks, such as traffic control, speed limit enforcement and runaway vehicle tracking. Although it has been studied for decades, it is attracting more and more attention due to the recent development of deep learning and improved performance. Also, it is largely divided into license plate detection and recognition. In this study, experiments were conducted to improve license plate detection performance by utilizing various object detection methods and WPOD-Net(Warped Planar Object Detection Network) model. The accuracy was improved by selecting the method of detecting the vehicle(s) and then detecting the license plate(s) instead of the conventional method of detecting the license plate using the object detection model. In particular, the final performance was improved through the process of removing noise existing in the image by using the Fast-SRGAN model, one of the Super-Resolution methods. As a result, this experiment showed the performance has improved an average of 4.34% from 92.38% to 96.72% compared to previous studies.

  • The objective of this work is to study the wave propagation of an FGM plate via a new integral inverse shear model with temperature-dependent material properties. In this contribution, a new model based on a high-order theory field of displacement is included by introducing indeterminate integral variables and inverse co-tangential functions for the presentation of shear stress. The temperature-dependent properties of the FGM plate are assumed mixture of metal and ceramic, and its properties change by the power functions of the thickness of the plate. By applying Hamilton's principle, general formulas of wave propagation were obtained to plot the phase velocity curves and wave modes of the FGM plate with simply supported edges. The effects of the temperature and volume fraction by distributions on wave propagation of the FGM plate are investigated in detail. The results of the dispersion and the phase velocity curves of the propagation wave in the functionally graded plate are compared with previous research.

  • In this paper, the transmitted noise reduction performance of piezoelectric smart panels is experimentally studied. The proposed piezoelectric smart panels are comprised of plate structure on which piezoelectric sensor/actuators are bonded and sound absorbing material is provided. It is a combination of passive and active approaches utilizing a passive effect at high frequencies and an active effect at low frequencies. To prove the concept of piezoelectric smart panels, an acoustic measurement experiment is performed. An acoustic tunnel is designed and its acoustic characteristics are tested. Below 800Hz, the tunnel exhibits a plane wave guide characteristics. When an absorbing material is bonded on a single plate, a remarkable transmitted noise reduction in mid frequency range is observed except the first resonance frequency. By enabling the active control of single smart panel with negative feedback control. about 10dB noise reduction is achieved at the resonance frequencies. The double smart panel got 4dB at the first resonance frequency and has more potential to reduce the transmitted noise in a wide range frequency. Piezoelectric smart panels incorporating passive absorbing material and active piezoelectric devices is a promising technology for noise reduction in a wide range frequency.

  • The present paper deals with the nonlinear analysis of the functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) annular plate with two smart layers as sensor and actuator. The normal pressure is applied on the plate. The geometric nonlinearity is considered in the strain-displacement equations based on Von-Karman assumption. The problem is symmetric due to symmetric loading, boundary conditions and material properties. The radial and transverse displacements are supposed as two dominant components of displacement. The constitutive equations are derived for two sections of the plate, individually. Total energy of the system is evaluated for elastic solid and piezoelectric sections in terms of two components of displacement and electric potential. The response of the system can be obtained using minimization of the energy of system with respect to amplitude of displacements and electric potential. The distribution of all material properties is considered as power function along the thickness direction. Displacement-load and electric potential-load curves verify the nonlinearity nature of the problem. The response of the linear analysis is investigated and compared with those results obtained using the nonlinear analysis. This comparison justifies the necessity of a nonlinear analysis. The distribution of the displacements and electric potential in terms of non homogenous index indicates that these curves converge for small value of piezoelectric thickness with respect to elastic solid thickness.

  • In the present analysis, the spline finite strip with higher-order shear deformation is formulated for the static analysis of piezoelectric composite plates. The proposed method incorporates Reddy's third-order shear deformation theory, Touratier's "Sine" model, Afaq's exponential model, Cho's higher-order zigzag laminate theory, as well as the classic plate theory and the first-order plate theory. Thus, the analysis can be conducted based on any of the above-mentioned theories. The selection of a specific method is done by simply changing a few terms in a 2 by 2 square matrix and the results, obtained according to different plate theories, can be compared to each other. Numerical examples are presented for piezoelectric composite plates subjected to mechanical loading. The results based on different shear deformation theories are compared with the three-dimensional solutions. The behaviours of piezoelectric composite plates with different length-to-thickness ratios, fibre orientations, and boundary conditions are also investigated in these examples.

  • SmartCrown is a system to control the plate crown by shifting the sine-shaped work rolls in the axial direction. The control range of the plate crown depends on a depth of sine-shaped roll profile because the roll radius varies continuously along the axial direction. When the roll profile is changed to improve the control range, the contact stress between the work roll and the back-up roll also changes. In the current study, the contact stress for various profiles and rolling conditions were analyzed using the finite element method and compared with results from Hertzian contact theory. A submodel method is used to increase the accuracy of the finite element analysis. The analysis results showed that the maximum increase in the contact stress was only 53MPa, so it is anticipated that no back-up roll spalling will occur.

  • This paper aims to address the intelligent active vibration control problem of a flexible rectangular plate vibration involving parameter variation and external disturbance. An adaptive sliding mode (ASM) MIMO control strategy and smart piezoelectric materials are proposed as a solution, where the controller design can deal with problems of an external disturbance and parametric uncertainty in system. Compared with the current 'classical' control design, the proposed ASM MIMO control strategy design has two advantages. First, unlike existing classical control algorithms, where only low intelligence of the vibration control system is achieved, this paper shows that high intelligent of the vibration control system can be realized by the ASM MIMO control strategy and smart piezoelectric materials. Second, the system performance is improved due to two additional terms obtained in the active vibration control system. Detailed design principle and rigorous stability analysis are provided. Finally, experiments and simulations were used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy using a hardware prototype based on NI instruments, a MATLAB/SIMULINK platform, and smart piezoelectric materials.
