Theoretical studies have been performed to study the binding characteristics of the alkali metal iodides, M-I (M = Li, Na, K), to poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO, I), poly(ethylene amine) (PEA, II) and poly(ethylene N-methylamine) (PEMA, III) via the B3LYP method. In this study, two types of complexes, singly-coordinated systems (SCS) and doubly-coordinated systems (DCS), were considered, and dissociation energies (${\Delta}E_D$) were calculated both with and without basis set superposition error (BSSE). Two types of counterpoise (CP) approach were investigated in this work, but the ${\Delta}E_D$ values corrected by using the function CP (fCP) correction exhibited an unusual trend in some cases due to deformation of the sub-units. This problem was solved by including geometry relaxation in the CP-corrected (GCP) interaction energy. On the other hand, the effects of the BSSE on the structures were very small when the complexes were re-optimized on the CP-corrected (RCP) potential energy surface (PES), even if the bond lengths between X and $M^+$ ($d_{{X-M}^+}$) and between $M^+$ and $I^-$ ($d_{M^+-I^-}$) were slightly lengthened. Therefore, neither the GCP nor RCP corrections made much difference to the dissociation energies.
The effect of reentrant type bowl geometry on combustion characteristics was investigated in a D.I. diesel engine. The main factor was the aspect ratio (Bowl Diameter / Bowl Depth) of bowl of combustion chamber, and the cylinder pressure, engine performance and emissions of the engine using the 4 kinds of the combustion chamber were meadured. Also, the combustion characteristics compared of the experimented and the calculated values which is used by the Hiroyasu's combustion model. The results are as follows; The effect of $d_c/H$ on ignition delay period are small. The smoke is corerelated to the heat release of the premixed and the diffusion combustion, i.g, the smoke decreased by decreasing the premixed combustion or increasing the diffusion combustion on cumulative heat release. The premixed combustion process has more effect than the diffusion combustion on smoke. The formal tendency of $d_c/H$ on engine performance has not appear.
The effects of the internal flow in a diesel injection nozzle on the atomization of the spray has been investigated experimentally. Flow visualization was made using a transparent acrylic model nozzle. And also, measurement of the sac chamber pressure was made for clartfying the effect of pressure fluctuation in the sac chamber on the wpray behaviors. The geometry of the model nozzle was scaled up 10 times of the actual nozzle and the injection pressure for the model nozzle was adjusted so as to achieve a Reynolds number at the discharge hole which was the same as the actual nozzle. Polystyrene tracers, a laser sheet light and a still/high speed video camera were used to visualize the flow pattern in the sac chamber. When the needle lift was small, the high turbulence in the sac chamber generated by the high velocity seat flow made the spread angle of the spray large. Cavitation which arose in the sky chamber induced the pressure fluctuation and then affects the spread angle of the spray.
Wrinkling is one of the major defects in sheet metal products together with tearing, springback and other geometric and surface defects. The initiation and growth of wrinkles are influenced by many factors such as stress ratios, mechanical properties of the sheet material, geometry of the workpiece, contact condition, etc. It is difficult to analyze the wrinkling initiation and growth considering all the factors because the effects of the factors are very complex and the wrinkling behavior may show a wide scatter of data even for small deviations of factors. The finite element analyses of the wrinkling initiation and growth in the sheet metal forming process provide the detailed information about the wrinkling behavior of sheet metal. The direct analyses of the wrinkling initiation and growth, however, bring about a little difficulty in complex industrial problems because it needs large memory size and long computation time. In the present study, therefore, a global-local analysis technique is introduced for the computational efficiency. Through the analysis of wrinkling in the door inner stamping process, the efficiency of the global-local analysis technique is investigated.
Vibrational energy harvester based on piezoelectricity has been expected to be the dominant energy harvesting technology due to the advantages of high conversion efficiency, light weight and small size, night operation, etc. Its commercialization is just around the corner but the integration with power management electronics should be solved in advance. In this paper, therefore, fully-integrated design environment for piezoelectric energy harvesting systems is presented to assist co-design with the power management electronics. The proposed design environment is capable of analyzing the energy harvester including the package-induced damping effects and simulating the device and its power management electronics simultaneously. When the developed design environment was applied to the fabricated device, the simulated resonant frequency matched well with the experimental result with a difference of 2.97% only. Also, the complex transient response was completed in short simulation time of 3,001 seconds including the displacement distribution over the device geometry. Furthermore, a full-bridge power management circuit was modeled and simulated with the energy harvester simultaneously. Therefore the proposed, fully-integrated design environment is accurate and fast enough for the contribution on successful commercialization of piezoelectric energy harvester.
An experiment was conducted for the OECD/NEA ROSA-2 Project using the large-scale test facility (LSTF), which simulated a 17% hot leg intermediate-break loss-of-coolant accident in a pressurized water reactor (PWR). In the LSTF test, core uncovery started simultaneously with liquid level drop in crossover leg downflow-side before loop seal clearing, and water remaining occurred on the upper core plate in the upper plenum. Results of the uncertainty analysis with RELAP5/MOD3.3 code clarified the influences of the combination of multiple uncertain parameters on peak cladding temperature within the defined uncertain ranges. For studying the scaling problems to extrapolate thermal-hydraulic phenomena observed in scaled-down facilities, an experiment was performed for the OECD/NEA PKL-3 Project with the Primarkreislaufe Versuchsanlage (PKL), as a counterpart to a previous LSTF test. The LSTF test simulated a PWR 1% hot leg small-break loss-of-coolant accident with steam generator secondary-side depressurization as an accident management measure and nitrogen gas inflow. Some discrepancies appeared between the LSTF and PKL test results for the primary pressure, the core collapsed liquid level, and the cladding surface temperature probably due to effects of differences between the LSTF and the PKL in configuration, geometry, and volumetric size.
A mechanical face seal is a tribo-element intended to control leakage of working fluid at the interface between a rotating shaft and its housing. Leakage of working fluid decreases drastically as the clearance of the mating seal faces gets smaller. But the very small seal clearance results in an increased reduction of seal life because of high wear and heat generation. Therefore, in the design of mechanical face seals a compromise between low leakage and acceptable seal life is important, and it presents a difficult and practical design problem. A fluid film or sealing dam geometry of the seal clearance affects seal lubrication performance very much, and thereby it is one of the main design considerations. In this study the Reynolds equation for the sealing dam of mechanical face seals is numerically analyzed, using the Galerkin finite element method, which is readily applied to various seal geometries. Film pressures of the sealing dam are analyzed, including the effects of the seal face coning and tilt. Then, lubrication performances of the seals, such as opening forces, restoring moments, leakage, and dynamic coefficients, are calculated, and they are compared to the results obtained by the narrow seal approximation.
The present study investigates convective heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics inside a rotating two-pass rectangular duct. A naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy. The objective of this study is to determine the effects of turning geometry with rotation for 0.0$\leq$Ro$\leq$0.24. The results reveal that the sharp-turn corner has the larger pressure drop and lower heat transfer in the post-turn region than those of the round-turn corner. The strong secondary flow enhances heat transfer for the round-turn corner. Coriolis force induced by the rotation pushes the high momentum core flow toward the trailing wall in the first passage with radially outward flow and toward the leading wall in the second passage with radially inward flow. Consequently, the high heat transfer rates are generated on the trailing surface and the leading surface in the first and second passage, respectively. However, the strong secondary flow due to the turning dominates the flow pattern in the second passage, thus the heat transfer differences between the leading and trailing surfaces are small with the rotation.
The present study tackles the problem of forced vibration of imperfect axially functionally graded shell structure with truncated conical geometry. The linear and nonlinear large-deflection of the structure are considered in the mathematical formulation using von-Kármán models. Modified coupled stress method and principle of minimum virtual work are employed in the modeling to obtain the final governing equations. In addition, formulations of classical elasticity theory are also presented. Different functions, including the linear, convex, and exponential cross-section shapes, are considered in the grading material modeling along the thickness direction. The grading properties of the material are a direct result of the porosity change in the thickness direction. Vibration responses of the structure are calculated using the semi-analytical method of a couple of homotopy perturbation methods (HPM) and the generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM). Contradicting effects of small-scale, porosity, and volume fraction parameters on the nonlinear amplitude, frequency ratio, dynamic deflection, resonance frequency, and natural frequency are observed for shell structure under various boundary conditions.
In this study, the effects of Elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication pressure on the critical shoulder height of raceway in an angular contact ball bearing were investigated. Both 3D contact analyses using an influence function and the EHL analysis were conducted for the contact geometry between the ball and raceways. The pressure distributions by 3D contact analysis and EHL analysis for an example bearing were compared. The effect of ellipse truncation on the minimum film thickness also investigated from EHL analysis. The critical shoulder height in the dry contact and the EHL state were compared for various applied loads. It is shown that when the ellipse truncation occurs, the pressure spike for the EHL conjunction is higher than that for the dry contact, and its location moves more inward of the contact center. The steep pressure gradients would increase the flow rate, so in order to maintain flow continuity a significant reduction in film thickness and an abrupt rise in pressure occurs in the edge of shoulder. Significant reduction of the minimum film thickness occurs near the edge of shoulder. The critical shoulder heights in the EHL state are calculated as higher values compared with in the dry contact. This results shows that the determination of critical shoulder height by the EHL analysis is more proper.
