소형펀치 시험법을 이용한 INCONEL Alloy 617의 수소취화거동 평가 (Evaluation of Hydrogen Embrittlement Behavior in INCONEL Alloy 617 by Small Punch Test)

  • For the conversion into hydrogen society, not only studying facilities of hydrogen production, storage, transportation and charging system but also developing technique of ensuring safety are essentially needed. Hence, for the first step of that, evaluated the hydrogen embrittlement of Inconel alloy 617, Ni-based super heat-resisting alloy, by small punch test. Prepared the various specimens through changing electrochemical charging time and measured the toughness degradation of the specimens by small-punch test. The analysis of hydrogen embrittlement behavior were carried out by investigating the fractured surface of specimens. This study has significance on revealing mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement behavior and the factor affecting hydrogen embrittlement in the future study.

  • Charpy V-Notch test is commonly used to evaluate fracture toughness. However, since the region to be evaluated is limited to bulk material due to the specimen size required, individual evaluation of micro-structures on weldment is very difficult. In this study, ASP(Advanced Small Punch) test was carried out to evaluate material degradation and fracture toughness on the B.M, W.M and each micro-structures of HAZ for X20CrMoV121 and 2.25Cr1Mo steels with artificial aging time. In addition, to evaluate fracture toughness and material degradation of B.M and W.M of X20CrMoV121 steels with aging times, CVN (Charpy V-notch) test was performed. And then the correlation between ASP and CVN test on X20CrMoV121 steels was obtained. Furthermore, through this correlation, material degradation property of each micro-region of the HAZ in weldment, which was impossible to be evaluated by the CVN test, can be estimated and determined.

  • The boiler tubes and steam Pipes operating both at high temperature and pressure for a long period of time in a power plant are degraded by creep because of internal pressure. So, the remaining life of a component is evaluated by the creep rupture strength. Although the conventional method to evaluate the creep damage is widely used, it has some disadvantages such as requires large size specimen and long employed to evaluate the correlation between fracture toughness and evaluation time. Recently, new method so called "small lunch test' is used to evaluate degradation of creep. In this study, a conventional creep test and a small punch test are conducted using 2.25Cr-1Mo steel which is mainly used for the boiler tubes and steam pipes in power plant. The creep life, approximately 1,500 hrs, is determined by conventional method under a severe condition then specimens for a small Punch test are obtained after certain time intervals such as 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 of final rupture time, respectively.

소형펀치시험을 이용한 자동차용 고강도강 수소취성 평가 (Evaluation of Hydrogen Embrittlement of High Strength Steel for Automobiles by Small Punch Test)

  • The hydrogen embrittlement of high strength steel for automobiles was evaluated by small punch (SP) test. The test specimens were fabricated to be 5 series, having various chemical compositions according to the processes of heat treatment and working. Hydrogen charging was electrochemically conducted for each specimen with varying of current density and charging time. It was shown that the SP energy and the maximum load decreased with increasing hydrogen charging time in every specimen. SEM investigation results for the hydrogen containing samples showed that the fracture behavior was a mixed fracture mode having 50% dimples and 50% cleavages. However, the fracture mode of specimens with charging hydrogen changed gradually to the brittle fracture mode, compared to the mode of other materials. All sizes and numbers of dimples decreased with increasing hydrogen charging time. These results indicate that hydrogen embrittlement is the major cause of fracture for high strength steels for automobiles; also, it is shown that the small punch test is a valuable test method for hydrogen embrittlement of high strength sheet steels for automobiles.

  • In conventional SCC susceptibility test, there are constant strain test, constant load test, slow strain rate test(SSRT) and K$_{ISCC}$ test. Among them, the SSRT method is much more aggressive in producing SCC than the other tests, so that the test time of it is considerably reduced. But this SSRT method has mostly been worked using the uniaxial tensile specimen untill now. Therefore, the SSRT method using the tensile specimen(Ten-SSRT) has much difficulty in SCC susceptibility evaluation of a localized region like weldment and the advantage material of high order. Recentely, the small punch(SP) test method using miniaturized small specimen is the very effective test method for fracture strength evaluation of a localized region like weldment and fusion reactor wall irradiated in the nuclear power plant. This paper investigated the possibility of SCC susceptibility evaluation by the SP-SSRT method using the miniaturized small specimen. Therefore, we obtained the result that the SP-SSRT had the possibility for the evaluations of SCC susceptibility for shorter time to corrosive environment compare to Ten-SSRT which was conventional method.

Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of RPV Clad by Small Punch Tests

  • The microstructural characteristics and its related mechanical properties of RPV cladding have been investigated using small punch (SP) tests. SA508 Cl.3 RPV steel plates were overlay cladded with the type ER309L welding consumables by submerged arc welding process. Although the RPV clad material had a small portion of 5 ferrite phase, it still showed the ductile to brittle transition behavior The transition temperature was determined by the SP test and it depended on the content of $\sigma$ phase, specimen size, and determination methods. The fracture appearance of SP specimen was changed from circumferential to radial cracking as test temperature became low, and below the transition temperature region, ER309L cladding usually fractured along the 6 ferrite by the low temperature failure of ferrite phase.

  • An inverse method is presented to obtain material's flow properties by using small punch test. This procedure employs, as the objective function of inverse analysis, the balance of measured load-di splacement response and calculated one during deformation. In order to guarantee convergence to global minimum, simulated annealing method was adopted to optimize the current objective function. In addition, artificial neural network was used to predict the load-displacement response under given material parameters which is the most time consuming and limits applications of global optimization methods to these kinds of problems. By implementing the simulated annealing for optimization along with calculating load-displacement curve by neural network, material parameters were identified irrespective of initial values within very short time for simulated test data. We also tested the present method for error-containing experimental data and showed that the flow properties of material were well predicted.

  • Hydrogen embrittlement of a pipe is an important factor in hydrogen transport. To characterize hydrogen embrittlement, tensile and fracture toughness tests should be conducted. However, in the case of hydrogen-embrittled materials, it is difficult to perform tests in hydrogen environment, particularly at low temperatures. It would be useful to develop a methodology to predict the fracture toughness of hydrogen-embrittled materials at low temperatures using more efficient tests. In this study, the fracture toughness of API X52 steels in hydrogen at low temperatures is predicted from numerical simulation using coupled finite element (FE) damage analyses with FE diffusion analysis, calibrated by analyzing small punch test data.

  • The Micromechanics test is new test method which uses comparatively smaller specimen than that required in conventional material tests. There are several methods, such as small-specimen creep test, the continuous indentation test, and small punch(SP) test. Among them, the small punch(SP) test method has been applied to many evaluation fields, such as a ductile-brittle transition temperature, stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen embrittlement, and fracture properties of advanced materials like FGM or MMC. In this study, the small punch(SP) test is performed to evaluate the mechanical properties at high/low temperature from $-196^{\circ}C$ to $650^{\circ}C$ and the material degradation for virgin and aged materials of 9Cr1MoVNb steel which has been recently developed. The ${\Delta}P/{\Delta}{\delta}$ parameter defined a slope in plastic membrane stretching region of SP load-displacement curve decreases according to the increase of specimen temperature, and that of aged materials is higher than the virgin material in all test temperatures. And the material degradation degrees of aged materials with $630^{\circ}C$ -500hrs and $630^{\circ}C$ -1000hrs are $36^{\circ}C$ and $38^{\circ}C$ respectively. These behaviors are good consistent with the results of hardness($H_v$) and maximum displacement(${\delta}_{max}$).

  • Type-3 용기 라이너는 두께가 5 mm일뿐 아니라 곡률을 가지고 있기 때문에 파괴인성시험을 위한 표준형 시편의 제작에 어려움이 있다. 따라서 용기 라이너의 파괴인성을 평가하기 위해서는 소형시편 시험기법이 도입되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 용기 라이너의 파괴인성을 평가하기 위해 소형펀치(small punch, SP)시험법을 도입하였다. SP시험으로부터 측정된 하중-변위 곡선 결과에서 라이너 재료는 연성이 소진하여 막신장 영역에서 파손되었다. 라이너 재료는 제작공정 특성에 기인하여 소성변형량이 방향에 따라 다름에도 불구하고 등방성 파괴양상을 보였다. SP시험 데이터를 사용하여 파괴인성을 평가한 결과 $J_{Ic}=13.0kJ/m^2$ 이었다. 이 값은 동종재료의 파괴인성 값과 유사하다. 따라서 SP시험 데이터를 사용하여 평가한 파괴인성은 타당하며, 완성된 용기 라이너는 유효한 파괴인성 값을 유지하는 것으로 확인 되었다.
