  • The tropic structure and the function of a small pone ecosystem under the tree stand were studied in terms of energy flow. About 28% of total solar radiation was intercepted by the tree canopy over the pond. Primary producers converted 1.1%(3,382 kcal$\cdot$$m^{-2}$$\cdot$$y^{-1}$) of solar radiation (320,000 kcal$\cdot$$m^{-2}$$\cdot$$y^{-1}$) into gross primary production. The amount of energy availble to the pond snail was 1,683 kcal.m-2.y-1 of the net production by primary producers and 1,033 kcal$\cdot$$m^{-2}$$\cdot$$y^{-1}$ of the litter fallen into the pond. The amount of gross secondary production by the pond snail was 245 kcal$\cdot$$m^{-2}$$\cdot$$y^{-1}$. Judging from these, supply of both net primary production and the litter was indispensable for the maintenance of the pond ecosystem. The total amont of energy as gross primary production plus litter was 4,415 kcal$\cdot$$m^{-2}$$\cdot$$y^{-1}$(100%). Since the total respiration loss was calculated to be 1,917 kcal$\cdot$$m^{-2}$$\cdot$$y^{-1}$(43.4%), the rate of energy accumulation in the pond estimated to 56.6%.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a method to spread out the ecological ponds in urban areas more effectively. It is urgent to supply the ecological ponds in more broad scope to ensure the water space in urban areas which has been dried out. It is necessary to formulate a plan for improving the amenity in the cities through creation a biotop in swampy land by building rainfall ponds. Thus, a model of the ecological pond in this study has been developed by reviewing the related researches which provide the theoretical basis and by considering the characteristics of nature for a naturally approached pond. This study has produced a ecological pond model in order to introduce and spread out damp biotop. Ecological aspects have been mainly considered in designing and building the pond model. This model consists of areas for emerged plants and bog plants and has its advantage in providing animals and insects with habitats and shelters. In addition, the model includes areas for emerged plants, which are very effective in purification of the rainfall from the rooftop. After the construction of the pond, the plants were planted according to the plan, and the infiltration trench was installed beside the pond to drain out the overflow of the pond. The result of this research has shown the possibility of supplying the ecological pond in small parks and in schools of the city in an easy way. Through the application of this pond system, the water cycle and the ecosystem in urban areas will be improved.

  • To reveal the relationship between pond type and chemical water characteristics and wetland flora, we investigated 8 small irrigation ponds in CCZ, which represent 4 types of irrigation ponds. Cation and anion concentrations in water were low at spring type ponds and cation or anion concentrations were high at others. Especially, Kyeongeuisun pond, which is water exchanging type, had high cation and anion concentrations. This indicates that water source of this ponds is surface water. CCA showed that chemical water characteristics and wetland flora were reflected in pond types. However, water exchanging type ponds were not clustered in a group, which comes from the difference in water source and we suggest that water source should be an additional criteria to devide pond type of water exchanging.

  • BACKGROUND: Water-born pollution loads by agricultural non-point source (NPS) pollution are expected to become intensified due to ongoing precipitation change. Therefore, it is essential to develop a best management practice (BMP) that is suitable to agricultural environments in Korea. This study aimed to develop an environmental-friendly BMP to reduce NPS pollution load by agricultural activities. An eco-friendly way, small drainage pond, was suggested in this study to avoid direct drainage of agricultural runoffs and eventually reduce the amount of pollutants discharged into the surrounding aqua-environment. METHODS AND RESULTS: A small pond ($12m^2$) was constructed at the corner of a rice paddy field ($1,715m^2$) located in Suwon, Korea. Water was allowed to drain only via a small drainage pond. Sampling was repeatedly made at two locations, one from an entrance and the other from an exit of a pond, during the rice cultivation period (May to October, 2012). Generally, sampling was made only when runoff water drained through a pond, such as during and/or after rain (irrigation). The water quality analysis showed that all quality parameters (SS, $COD_{Mn}$, T-N, and T-P) were improved as water passed through the pond. The amount of runoff water was reduced by 96~100%. Suspended solids and COD concentrations was reduced by 79.3% and 45.6%, respectively. In case of T-N and T-P concentrations, the reduction rates were 52.2% and 60.5%, respectively and the amount of T-N and T-P were reduced by 16.3~73.0% and 15.4~70.1%, respectively. CONCLUSION(S): Our data implies that agricultural NPS pollution from rice paddy fields can be effectively managed when an appropriate drainage water management practice is imposed. In this paper, it was suggested that an installation of a small drainage pond can be effective to prevent not only the nutrient loss from rice fields but also pollutant discharge to surrounding water environments.

  • The place of South Weol Dynastys authorities exhumed in the region of KangChoWu, China lies adjacent to a stone ditch through which water streams crookedly, and a dark trough of stone pond in the north side. There is a sharply curved stone ditch and a crescent-shaped water entrance made by stones. The place was separated by using stone columns and stone walls. There is a beam of ditch, a crooked entrance, a flat bridge of slate, a stepping-stone, a sluice gate, and a crooked corridor. There are big and small artificial islands, and reinforcing stone drainage way in the palace pond recently exhumed at the building site for the pavilion of Hwang-Yong Temple in Kuhwang-Dong, Gyeongju city, Korea. There are four facilities assumed to be entrance and exits at four corners and an open space on which gravel was spread extensively. A narrow road and a middle road with indefinite curves at the south of Asukakyoseki exhumed by the first, second and third and two stone buckets which one is to fill with water and the other is to drain water off like fountain are there, and besides wave protecting dam and north pond and the part that water pass were excavated. Palace ponds that were extensively distributed at old residential cities are a general phenomenon of countries in eastern Asia. Anap pond of Silla and Gungnam pond of Baekje were in Kroea. We believe that Asutnkyoseki is on the extension. Although more investigations in the background of thought and the genealogical relation about the palace pond are required, it seems that an idea was surely received from China.

  • The effects of floating islands on the changes in phytoplankton community structure were investigated in a small artificial pond. The floating islands planted with various emergent macrophytes covered 35% of total water surface area of the pond. Total 17 genera and 25 species of phytoplankton were found in the pond, of which Dinophyceae was 1 genera and 1 species, Cyanophyceae 1 genera and 1 species, Bacillariophyceae 6 genera and 8 species, and Chlorophyceae 9 genera and 15 species. Dominant phytoplanktons under floating islands were changed from Aphanizomenon sp. as a Cyanophyceae to Golenkinia radiata, Kirchneriella contorta and Micractinium pusillum as a Chlorophyceae for 56 days after the construction of floating islands on July 24, 2001. The changes of dominant phytoplanktons of the control without floating islands were similar to those under floating islands in July and August, but Aphanizomenon sp. was rapidly increased in the control sites in September. About 99% of the cell number of Aphanizomenon sp. was disappeared for a month after construction of floating islands. Species diversity of phytoplankton under the floating islands of Iris pseudoacorus was higher than those of other macrophytes as well as the control without floating islands. The cell numbers of Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae were fewer under the floating islands of I. pseudoacorus than those of other macrophytes. Our results showed that the floating islands could be a useful eco-technique for the control of water bloom by Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae in a pond ecosystem.

  • Fabrea salina living at salt pond is an interesting ciliate in the research of photobiology and live food for aquaculture. This study was carried out to understand the natural habitat of F. salina at salt pond, which would be a basic biological knowledge for the indoor mass culture of this ciliate. In this research, the water quality as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll-a was examined with the population density of the ciliate at salt pond. The highest population density of F. salina occurred at 109 ppt and $31^{\circ}C$with 2,390 inds./L in August, and the distribution of the ciliate was positively correlated with salinity, temperature, and chlorophylla. Even though F. salina is a very euryharine ciliate, it did not occur at the salinity below 47 ppt in this study. Its reason is able to be explained with the occurrence of many predators as small fish and food competitors as zooplankton living at low salinity of salt pont. While F. salina occurred with Anemia at the same habitat using the same food source, the optimum salinity for the ciliate was a little higher than that of Anemia, and the optimum temperature for the former was a little lower than that of the later. This should be a reason for that these two species have different ecological nich at the same habitat using the same food source.

  • In this paper, the interface stability not to occur mixing and entrainment between the adjacent layers has been studied in the case of the selective withdrawal of a stratum and the injection in stratified fluid formed by the density difference in a small solar pond. There are stability parameter, Richardson number, Rayleigh number and Froude number as the parameters governing stability in order to measure the interface stability on the stratified fluid. The model which could measure the interface stability on the stratified fluid was the small solar pond composed by 1 meters wide, 2 meters high, and 5 meters long. In order to measure the interface stability on the stratified fluid at the inlet port, the middle section and the outlet port, Richardson number, Rayleigh number, and Froude number involved in the parameters governing the stability were calculated by means of the data resulted from the test of the study on hydrodynamic stability between the convective and nonconvective layers in that solar pond. Richardson number written by the ratio of inertia force to buoyancy force can be used in order to measure the stability on the stratified fluid related to the buoyancy force generated from the injection of fluid. Rayleigh number written by the product of Grashof number by Prandtl number can be used in order to measure the stability of the fluid related to the heat flux and diffusivity of viscosity. Froude number written by the ratio of gravity force to inertia force can be used in order to measure the stability of the nonhomogeneous fluid related to the density difference. As the result of calculating the parameters governing stability, the interface stability on the stratified fluid couldn't be identified below the 70cm height from the bottom of the solar pond, but it could be identified above the 70cm height from it at the inlet port, the middle section and the outlet port. When compared with such the three parameters as Richardson number, Rayleigh number, Froude number, the calculated result was in accord with them at inlet port, the middle section and the outlet port. Henceforth, it is learned that even though any of the three parameters is used for the purpose of measuring the interface stability on the stratified fluid, the result will be the same with them. It is concluded that all the use of Richardson number, Rayleigh number, and Froude number, is desirable and infallible to measure the interface stability on the stratified fluid in the case of considering the exist of the fluid flow and the heat flux like the model of the solar pond.
