  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) concentrations on fruit quality of small-sized RubyS apples during cold storage. After harvesting, the fruits were treated with 1-MCP at 0.5 or 1 µL/L concentrations and, subsequently, stored at 0℃ for 6 months. After 6 months, the flesh firmness of untreated fruits, which was 85.4 N at harvest, had gradually decreased to 46.5 N; however, that of 1-MCP-treated fruits was maintained at 59.1 and 59.5 N. Titratable acidity (TA) of untreated fruits had also decreased from 0.42 to 0.24%, whereas that of 1-MCP-treated fruits was maintained at 0.26 and 0.27%. Soluble solids content (SSC) did not differ in all fruits. However, the 1-MCP-treated fruits had lower levels of SSC/TA ratio than untreated fruits. Moreover, after 6 months, the ethylene production had increased to 47.0 µL/kg/h in the untreated fruits, whereas 1-MCP blocked the ethylene production at 1.4 and 1.7 µL/kg/h. The weight loss and peel color variables remained unaffected by 1-MCP treatments. Thus, these results indicated that, for RubyS apples, the storability was only 2 months at 0℃ without treatment, which can be extended to 6 months with 1-MCP treatments. The application of 1-MCP at 0.5 µL/L concentration is effectively and economically sufficient to maintain the quality of RubyS apples.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the effects of irrigation quantity in irrigation management system controlled by drainage level sensors for perlite bag culture on the growth and yields of tomatoes during different growth stages. Tomato plants were irrigated with four selected methods; supplying small quantity (~70 mL) during entire growth (S-S), large quantity (~145 mL) during entire growth (L-L), small quantity before harvesting the first cluster fruits and large quantity after harvesting (S-L), and large quantity until harvesting the first cluster fruits and small quantity after harvesting (L-S). The irrigation quantity supplied in each time was gradually adjusted along with the ratios as the tomato crop grew during different growth stages. The growth of the tomato plants was unstable and slow during the entire cropping period when the plant was irrigated by small or large quantities (S-S or L-L). In L-S treatment, the growth phase of the tomato was changed from vegetative to generative growth on the basis of the plant development index when each irrigation quantity was changed. The L-S treatment exhibited the largest root volume and yields with stable drainage ratios. Therefore, the optimum irrigation quantity was determined as 145 mL before harvesting the first cluster fruits and 70 mL after harvesting.

  • Anthocyanin, polyphenol contents, and antioxidant activities of introduced small fruits and berries varieties were investigated. The anthocyanin and polyphenol contents were different according to the varieties. The highest total anthocyanin was 927.9~1,149.1 mg, $100g^{-1}FW$, and the highest total polyphenol content was 502.2 to 530.5 mg, $100g^{-1}FW$ in black chokeberry. A linear correlation ($r^2$) was shown between DPPH free-radical scavenging activity and total anthocyanin ($r^2=0.7669^{**}$) and phenolic content ($r^2=0.8956^{***}$). The content of quercetin, catechin and epicatechin was higher among the all types of polyphenols in small fruits and berries varieties. The main anthocyanin of blueberry and black currant was delphinidin-3-glucoside, and the major anthocyanin of saskatoon berry and black chokeberry was cyanidin-3-galactoside.

  • We surveyed the physiological disorders of fruit vegetables grown in the greenhouse in Kyungbuk province in 1998. Greenhouses used for cultivation were mostly single or multi-span iron pipe houses covered with polyethylene film. Single span greenhouses were used for strawberry, oriental melon and watermelon. Fifty six percent of the surveyed farms was a mono-cropping system for oriental melon and tomato. There were greenhouses used for successive cultivation for 10 years or more for strawberry and oriental melon in Koryeong and Seongju. Varieties of fruit vegetables cultivated were diverse, especially in cucumber and watermelon. In strawberry, malformed fruits were observed most frequently in March and the small fruits at late harvest period. Leaf chlorosis, stunt plants and runner outbreak were also found during the growing season. In tomato, occurrence of malformed fruits was severe from March to May, and occurrence of cracked fruits and blossom- end rot was also severe in October and November. The self topping and abnormal stem in tomato were problem in hydroponic cultures in August and November, respectively. Malformed cucumber fruits, such as curved, club shaped, irregular shaped and narrow necked, occurred at late season. Umbrella-shaped leaf in cucumber in summer were caused by calcium deficiency. Most serious disorders were fermented and malformed fruits occurring from March to May in oriental melon, and cracked fruits occurring from April to May in watermelon. At late growing stage of melons the leaf chlorosis occurred with complex symptoms of leaf disease. Growers had little knowledge on physiological disorders, and also on diagnose and measures to cure the disorders. Most growers pointed out that poor soil environment and temperature management in the greenhouse as the main causes of physiological disorders.

  • A method for weighing fruits without separating them from stem is proposed. The base of stem is fixed and a fruit or a cluster of fruits is forced to vibrate. The approximated vibration model is constructed by the use of Transfer Matrix Method. The natural frequency (w) in this model can be represented as a function of weight elements, and the length and stiffness of branch elements of stem. With this function, only w is possible to measure. However, several small weights whose weights are known are attached to weight elements in various combinations. From these equations, unknown parameters are determined so that the weight of each fruit can be obtained by a non-destructive method.

  • Plum pocket caused by the dimorphic ascomycetous fungi, Taphrina spp., results in unsightly malformations and crop loss. In 2016, Japanese plums (Prunus salicina Lindl.) with plum pocket symptoms were found in Gimcheon. Three isolates were collected from symptomatic P. salicina fruits and identified as Taphrina deformans based on morphological characteristics and molecular sequence analysis of including internal transcribed space (ITS) and the mitochondrial small ribosomal subunit (SSU) regions of the three isolates. Pathogenicity test on plum fruits confirmed that, the present T. deformans isolates are causal agent of plum pocket. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of plum pocket caused by T. deformans in South Korea.

  • Physicochemical properties and sensory evaluation of Satsuma mandarin produced in Cheju were investigated . Fruit index(width/Length), soluble solids and acid content of Citrus unshiu marc. var. miyagawa(miyagawa) and C. unshiu marc. var.(okitsu) harvested at 1st December were 1.16 and 1.23, 12.12 and 12.01, 0.97 and 1.09, respectively. and the fruit of miyagawa was showed somewhat round in shape, compared to ikitsu. the taste of miyagawa seemed to be better than okitsu. However, compared to miyagawa, peel thickness was thinner, flesh ratio was higher, and firmness was higher as 0.502kg-force in kitsu. Nevertheless there were some differences among panelist groups in sensory evaluation , middle size of citrus fruits were favorable to most panelists, but except very small or very large size of fruits, there were not so much differences in okitsu. The panelists referred to somewhat flat-shaped fruits from that sensory evaluation score was increased to 1.3 in fruit index. nevertheless there were not so much differences in full-colored fruits, the citrus peel color of reddish yellow was more favorable than greenish or pale yellow color. the score was increased more linearly according to citrusfruit produced in optimum ciltivation area, and was prefered to thinner in peel thickness , Correlation between soluble solids, acid content , Brix/acid ratio and flesh ratio with sensory evaluation score were not showed significantly, it was different to with citrus juice. This data obtained in this experiments are supposed to be applied to the quality evaluation of Satsuma mandarin produced in Cheju .

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of defoliation treatment on the growth and yield of strawberries. There was a remarkable growth in the above-ground part and root of untreated strawberry plants possibly due to higher amount of photosynthesis, while overall plant growth was suppressed as the level of defoliation treatment increased. In both the "Seolhyang" and "Maehyang" cultivars examined, defoliation treatment resulted in small fruits and a low number of fruits per plant. Notably, 50% defoliation significantly reduced the number of fruits per plant to 8.2, compared to 13.8 in untreated plants. Defoliation treatment also negatively influenced the fruit quality including color, sugar content, and solid-acid rate. However, no significant changes in fruit firmness was observed in either cultivar. Therefore, retaining enough leaves without defoliation treatment can be important to increasing fruit yield, producing high quality fruits and saving labor required for defoliation.
