Feeding Habits of John Dory Zeus faber in the Coastal Waters off Gori, Korea (고리 주변해역에서 출현하는 달고기 (Zeus faber)의 식성)

  • The feeding habits of John Dory (Zeus faber) were studied by examining the stomach contents of 317 specimens collected from January 2004 to December 2005 in the coastal waters off Gori, Korea. The standard length (SL) of the specimens ranged from 12 to 42 cm. Z. faber is a piscivore and consumes mainly teleost fish such as Psenopsis anomala, Trichiurus lepturus and Conger myriaster. Its diet also includes shrimp and cephalopods. Smaller individuals (<25 cm SL) consume shrimp and small fish such as Glossanodon semifasciatus. The proportion of these prey items decreases with increasing fish size, and this decrease is paralleled by increased consumption of lager fish such as Psenopsis anomala and Trichiurus lepturus. The prey size increases with Z. faber size.

The Study on Kinds and Utilities of Jeot-Kal(Fermented Fish Products) (지역별 젓갈의 종류와 이용도에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was investigated kinds and utilities of Jeot-kal(fermented fish products) in 55 different regional area which were classified three temperature zone. The result were as follows ; (1) 95 kinds of jeot-kal found, they were subdivided 4 groups according to types and part of fish used : whole fish(46 kinds), vicera(11 kinds), shellfish(14 kinds), mollusca(4 kinds) and crustaceans(20 kinds). 17 kinds of jeot-kal were found in all area. (2) They were used as side dish, seasoning substitution of soy sauce or vinegar and important materials of kimchi. In Kimchi, 49 kinds of jeot-kal were used and Myeolchi Jeot(self-fermented enchovy) was prefered at southern area, saewoo jeot (self-fermented small shrimp), gonjengi jeot(self-fermented Mysis), hwangsegi jeot(self-fermented Hwangandali) were prefered at nouthern and middle area. Sometimes they were used in sacrified service. (3) Salt content and pH of jeot-kal at southern area were higher than other area.

Contamination of Shellfish with Vibrio vulnificus the Present Situation and Countermeasures (어패류의 비브리오패혈증 균 오염과 그 대책)

  • Vibrio septicemia,, resulting in high mortality, has been caused by Vibrio vulnificus. Ingestion of marine products or contact with sea water contaminated with Vibrio vulnificus can cause septicemia. Vibrio vulnificus has been detected world wide and west sea area of Korea, Kum river estuary in particular, showed high detection rate. Higher detection rate of Vibrio vulnificus were reported in the bottom deposit with low depth of water, low salinity, and high COD. Man with the liver disease can easily come down with Vibrio septicemia and the main source is the sliced raw fish dish. The preventive measure for this disease is to wash raw fish material thoroughly with tap water and handle in sanitary conditions. Washing with sea water is strictly prohibited . It may be necessary to forbid the small-scale businessmen from selling the sliced ray fish dish in the vicinity of seashore. Man with the liver disease of diabetes should not swim or consume the raw fish dish in the contaminated area during summer.

Correlation between water temperature and catch at a set net in Yeosu Bay, Korea

  • Data for fish species composition and the catch of fish species were obtained from the daily trading records for the period between April and December 2016 to 2018 at the set net fishing grounds in Yeosu Bay, Korea. The annual mean total catch was 195.8 tons, and the dominant species was the Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus niphonius), which accounts for about 55 percent of the total catch. The catch increased in spring and autumn. Increase in spring is caused by not Spanish mackerel but other fish while the increase in autumn by Spanish mackerel. The distinct increase of the catch in summer, 2017 was due to the new recruitment of small-sized Spanish mackerel, which was probably to be from the fish population hatched in spring in the East China Sea. Our results showed a strong correlation between water temperature and catch fluctuation. The catch increases with the increase in water temperatures, and the periodic pattern of the water temperature and catch fluctuation is more consistent in the offshore waters, in which warm current flows, than in the coast waters.

Impact of Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin on Mercury Absorption Using an in Vitro Digestion with Human Intestinal Cell Model

  • The effects of sodium copper chlorophyllin (SCC) on bioaccessibility and uptake of mercury from fish were investigated using an in vitro digestion coupled with a Caco-2 cell. Fish along with SCC was subjected to a simulated in vitro digestion, which simulates both the gastric and small intestinal phase in vivo. Mercury bioaccessibility, the amount of mercury released from fish to aqueous phase following a digestion, was measured. Various amounts of SCC (0.1-25 mg) significantly reduced mercury bioaccessibility in a dose dependent manner by 49-89% compared to the negative control (fish without SCC) (p<0.05). Mercury bioaccessibility in varying molar ratios of mercury to positive control, 2,3-dimercapto-1-propane sulfonate (DMPS) was between 24 and 52%. Mercury uptake by Caco-2 cells from test media containing aqueous phase following in vitro digestion was measured after 6 hr incubation at $37^{\circ}C$. Cellular mercury uptake with increasing amount of SCC ranged from 0.352 to $0.052\;{\mu}g$ mercury/mg protein, while those in DMPS treatment were between 0.14 and $0.27\;{\mu}g$ mercury/mg protein. Our study suggests that SCC can reduce mercury absorption following fish consumption and may be efficient as a synthetic chelating agent for long term chronic mercury exposure in fish eating populations.

Tracking of an Individual Fish by Use of the Ultrasonic Tag (초음파표식에 의한 단체어의 행동 추적)

  • This paper described on the tracking of an individual fish at the fishing ground of set net by use of a small ultrasonic fish tag. The apparatuses used were composed with a tag, three receivers and two time-interval counter oscilloscope. A pulsed ultrasonic transmitter tag fitted to back of a dorsal fin of a yellowtail specimen, Seriola quinqueradidta TEMMINCK et SCHLEGEL is tracked by measuring differences in the time of arrival of the acoustic pulses at an arrangement of three receivers in the freeding tank. The successive positions of the fish were calculated from the differences in the received time of the signals. A fish carying the tag was tracked in the fishing ground of set net by use of the hydrophone and Loran-C. The results of the tests showed that this method gave good positional information to track the movement of an individual fish in the fishing ground of set net.

  • The circumstance is giving the blow against fishermen with the incoming-decreasing and the difficulty of crew's supply & demand and management. In addition, the depression of the external situation like the departure of WTO system and the plan of EEZ proclaim is forcing fishery into improving their fishing condition. By this international and domestic circumstance, development of the sea water cooling apparatus for fish hold storage is demanded sincerely. First of all, we Investigated load characteristics which based on development of sea water cooling system and optimum fish hold storage. The experimental results is as follows. In creasing the speed of compressor and mass blew rate of refrigerant, the temperature of NaCl solution is low. And the load characteristics experiment on fish hold storage outlet is as fellows. As time goes by, increasing the mass flow rate of NaCl solution, temperature difference between inlet and outlet is small in a model of fish hold storage. These results provide many useful informations applicable to an actual design of sea water cooling system and optimum fish hold storage.

Temporal and Spatial Variation in Fish Larvae in Gamak Bay and Yeoja Bay, South Sea of Korea

  • Fish larvae were collected monthly with an ichthyoplankton net from 18 stations (including four stations located in eelgrass beds) in Gamak Bay and Yeoja Bay, southern Korea, in 2007. In total, 33 species of fish larvae were collected, of which Engraulis japonicus (48.5%), Tridentiger trigonocephalus (21.5%), and Omobranchus elegans (9.2%) were dominant. Dominant species varied seasonally: Hexagrammos otakii during December and January, Pholis nebulosa during January and March, Acanthogobius flavimanus in April, T. trigonocephalus in May, E. japonicus during June, July, September, and November, and Sillago japonica in August. Dominant species also differed between sites inside and outside the bays. Leiognathus nuchalis, O. elegans, and T. trigonocephalus were more abundant inside, while H. otakii was more abundant outside. From cluster analysis, three groups were identified according to sampling months (January-April, May-September, and October-December) and two groups according to station (inside and outside bays). The occurrence of small larvae of almost all major fish species indicated that the bays were used as spawning and nursery grounds. An exception was Lateolabrax japonicus, whose specimens were relatively large (>19 mm TL), suggesting that this fish may spawn offshore, with its juveniles approaching the bays with growth.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation of Flow Pattern Change in the Andong-Imha Reservoir Connecting Tunnel Due to Fish Exclusion Screens (어류 차단 스크린 설치에 따른 안동-임하호 연결터널 내 흐름변화에 대한 전산유체동역학 수치모의)

  • Imha Reservoir is connected to Andong Reservoir via a diversion tunnel allowing water to pass between. The diversion tunnel is equipped with screens to exclude exotic largemouth bass due to their predatory impacts on prey assemblages resulting in a degradation of species richness of local fish fauna and extinction of local fish populations in Korea. Flow pattern changes resulting from the fish screens and trash racks were investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Numerical simulations showed that the decrease in the discharge capacity of the tunnel is approximately 8.6% and the headloss coefficient for fish screen at Andong intake tower was determined to be 1.5. In order not to allow the small fishes enough to pass through the wire openings enter into Imha Reservoir through tunnel, the velocity in the tunnel should be greater than 1.48 m/s which is a critical ascending velocity of the bass. This study suggests that it can keep the velocity higher enough to exclude largemouth bass when a gate opens with the condition of 1.0m difference in water stage between two reservoirs.

Seasonal Variation of Fish Assemblages on Jangbong Tidal Flat, Incheon, Korea (장봉도 갯벌을 이용하는 어류군집의 계절 변화)

  • This study investigated the community structure and seasonal variation of the fish assemblages on Jangbong tidal flat, Incheon, Korea. Fish were collected monthly using a small otter trawl from November 1999 to January 2001. Thirty-six fish species were recorded, with a mean density of 185 individuals and biomass of 2,594.3 gWWt. The most abundant species by number were Johnius grypotus (23.7%), Acanthogobius hasta (17.8%), and Cynoglossus joyneri (10.7%), while the dominant species by catch weight were Acanthogobius hasta (21.2%), Sebastes schlegeli (16.2%), J. grypotus (14.0%), and C. joyneri (10.8%). Cluster analysis and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (nMDS) were applied to assess the seasonal fluctuation in the fish assemblages. Based on the result of the cluster analysis and nMDS ordination, the faunal group could be divided into cold- and warm-water specialist groups. The cold-water specialists included A. hasta, Acanthogobius luridus, Triaenopogon barbatus, Tridentiger trigonocephalus, and Liza haematocheila. The warm-water specialists were J. grypotus, C. joyneri, S. schlegeli, and Hexagrammos otakii. In conclusion, the community structure showed a distinct seasonal trend, which seemed to be related to the seasonal fluctuations in water temperature.
