  • In order to assess ecologically for the restored detention basin in Joogyo creek, this study carried out a monitoring on the ecosystem of the detention basin. The study site was a small detention basin with an area $6,350m^2$, which had been established in March, 2004. The monitoring started in August and November, 2007. Terrestrial, riparian, and aquatic plants species have increased about 2 times at detention basin compared to that of streamside. Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, aquatic insects and crustaceans were found more in species at detention basin, and especially there were a lot of more fish species. From the results, it seemed that various terrestrial, riparian, and aquatic ecosystem were made in the small detention basin.

  • This work is for examining a simplified equation based on the rational formula, which can easily decide storm-water detention volume in small urban catchments. The storm-water detention volume is determined by the inflow hydrograph flowing to detention basin and the outflow hydrograph discharged from the detention basin. The ratio of average outflow over the period of rainfall duration against allowable discharge was 0.5 in former simplified equation. But this research has found that the average outflow ratio depends on the storage methodology. In the case of the on-line storage method, the average outflow ratio is a function of the time of concentration of the catchments and rainfall duration, which ranged from 0.5~1.0. In the case of the off-line storage method, the average ratio is a function of peak discharge and allowable discharge except above time of concentration and rainfall duration, where its function value ranged from 1.0~2.0. When applying this equation to small catchment in Mokpo city, South Korea, we could easily calculate the relation curve between the storm-water detention volume and allowable discharge.

  • In this study for the development of area due to the increasing of industry, population and spreading of urbanization is rapidly increasing but about seventy percent of our nation's areas consists of the mountainous districts. In such case, when those areas have the heavy rains break, they are washed away by a fast-flowing stream of a valley and overflowed. Thus it could result on human life and property damage and also the widespread of flood damage in the downstream area. To decrease those damage, the construction of flood control reservoir is necessary. This research was aim to construct the flood runoff models of a mountainous small district and to determine the probability rainfall by analyzing precipitation. The study also examined the effects of location and size of flood control reservoir on flood reduction. The result showed that the construction of detention basin was an effective way to ensure the safety of flood control and multiple detention basin had superior result for reducing amount of runoff in the down stream area than the single detention basin.

  • The concept of the effective storage ratio has been suggested to determine the size of detention pond by the previous researchers. The 11 pump - pond facilities in Dongdu-chun city were selected to analyze the critical duration for design rainfall and the storage ratio for each rainfall duration in this study It has been then found that the criteria of the maximum storage ratio is not reasonable for determining the size of detention pond because the difference of storage ratio with respect to each rainfall duration is too small. Moreover, since the size of pond compared with the pump capacity is not always big enough, the pump should be frequently operated, which may result in pump failure. Thus, the pond should be sufficiently sized to prevent the possibility of the pump failure due to frequent operation. According to the analyses for changing pump capacity, it has been found that if the function of the pond compared with the pump is concentrated, determining the size of pond based on the storage ratio is operationally feasible for even small basin. Thus, an improved procedure based on the storage ratio for determining the size of detention pond in small basin has been suggested. The results by the proposed procedure considering pump switching frequency may lead to reasonable pump operation. A simple linear programming model has been also adopted to figure out the relationship between pump capacity and pond size. It has been shown that the determination lot the size of detention pond based on conventional hydrologic flood routing in pond is feasible for only urban districts not rural areas.

  • The effect of water quality improvement of combined sewage by detention pond has been studied. It is convinced that the pollutant load and peak flow through the combined sewer by first rainfall and runoff can be decreased by detention pond sited at the outlet of small basin. Hydraulic modeling of detention panel was performed for two cases of sedimentation pond and gravel contact pond. It has been recognized that it is more efficient to reduce the pollutant of combined sewage when the combined sewage is released alter a fixed detention time in the detention pond than it is released continuously without detention time. The gravel contact detention pond shows higher pollutant removal rate than the sedimentation detention pond in all pollutants. When it comes to gravel contact detention pond, the gravel pond filled with crushed gravel has a higher pollutant removal rate than that filled with river gravel.

  • National Emergency Management Agency is planning a flood disaster mitigation system in urban area. This research is about analysis of runoff reduction efficiency of the alloted detention system which is one of flood disaster mitigation systems in urban area. The alloted detention system is composed of small to middle size detention facilities located in up and middle stream of urban basin. To analyze runoff reduction efficiency of alloted detention system, basic runoff analysis in test area has been carried out and runoff characteristics with size and locations of detention facilities has been simulated. The results of simulation are showing that alloted detention system can reduce the discharge of main stream and detention facilities' size and locations are major parameters of runoff reduction efficiency. It is concluded that alloted detention system can be a useful method in urban area's flood disaster mitigation and can secure safety against flood damages in urban areas.

  • It was reviewed for the 2D numerical simulations to evaluate the effects of flood control by detention basin, even if stage-discharge relationships for the side weir were not known. A 2D depth-integrated numerical model was constructed by the application of the finite volume method to the shallow water equations as a numerical method and the introduction of an approximate Riemann solver for the accurate calculation of fluxes. Results by the model were compared with those by the laboratory test for the cases of free overflow and submerged flow over a side weir between the channel and storage. The difference between simulated and measured discharge coefficients for the case of free overflow is very small. In addition, the results by simulations were in good agreement with those by experiments for the submerged flow over a side weir and its mechanism was reproduced well. Through this study the discharge coefficients of side weirs can be accurately determined by the 2D numerical model and a considerable degree of accuracy can be achieved to evaluate the effect of flood defenses by detention basins. Thus, it will be expected to apply this model practically to the plan of detention basins, the evaluation of design alternatives, or the management of the existing ones.

  • Diffuse pollution from an urban area contributes to the significant pollution loading to a receiving water body. In this paper, rainfall runoffs from an urban basin with combined sewer systems located in the city of Daejeon were monitored to measure the rainfall runoff discharge rates and pollutant concentrations. Strong first flush effects were observed for all monitored rainfall runoffs. The first flush effects were closely related to rainfall intensity, while suspended solids were closely related to pollutant constituents. The observed averaged Event Mean Concentrations (EMCs) of Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) were 536.1 mg SS/L, 467.7 mg CODcr/L, 142.7 mg BOD/L, 16.5 mg TN/L, and 13.5 mg TP/L. Storage volumes for containing the first flush to improve water quality of the receiving stream can be estimated based on suspended solid concentration. In this study, retainment of the first flush equivalent to 5mm of precipitation could reduce diffuse pollution loading induced by CSOs to a receiving water body by up to 80% of suspended solid loading.

  • Current domestic research is to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiencies of flood prevention measures through one-dimensional numerical analysis and this study's object is to help water managers to make the efficient decisions by applying the two-dimensional urban run off model XP-SWMM model in the flooded area and comparing with the flood prevention measures. Statistics were analyzed, based on the data collected from Cheongju Weather Service from 1967 to 2011 for 45 years. 50 years Flood frequency simulations of water flow capacity analysis of the target area for flooded areas $539,548m^2$, inundation depth 1.0 m, was analyzed by inundation time of 48 minutes. When comparing with the constructions of bypass road and underground storage facilities to increase the water flow capacity of A1 small drainage areas as flood protection, if you install a batching target underground detention basin with a capacity of $13,500m^3$, it is expected that the flood by rainfall with frequency of 50 years will be resolved completely. In preparation for extreme weather in the future flood mitigation measures, underground storage tank installation is considered a better efficient way.
