This paper proposes a low-cost switched-mode rectifier (SMR) for a small-scale wind turbine with a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) system. Also, a sensorless Fuzzy MPPT control is realized by the proposed system. In the PMSG system with the SMR, the synchronous impedance can be replaced as the input inductor of a boost converter. Moreover, the sensorless MPPT control using the Fuzzy technique is carried out by the duty-ratio regulation of the SMR. The relation between the generating power and the duty-ratio is ruled by the chain rule. The wind turbine model is implemented by the squirrel cage induction motor and generated the variable torque when the generator speed is varied. To verify the performance of the proposed system, simulation and experimental results are executed.

Operating wind turbine generators at maximum power point requires maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control methods. However, conventional methods cannot track the appropriate maximum power point in situations involving wind turbine systems based on a series operation strategy. These systems comprise one or more local maximum power points, and conventional methods can detect only one local maximum power point closed by a current operation point. This study proposes an advanced MPPT method for the series operation strategy of a small, grid-connected wind turbine system. In determining the appropriate maximum point, operations at certain local maximum power points are analyzed. The results show one appropriate point, which is tracked by the proposed MPPT method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the experimental results.

Due to environmental issues such as global warming, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has become an inevitable measure to be taken. Among others, the building sector accounts for 50% of total carbon dioxide emissions, which is significantly high. Therefore, in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions of the buildings, improving the energy efficiency by utilizing wind power among renewable energy sources is recommended. In case of buildings in the planning stage, it is possible to take the load of wind power generation systems into consideration when determining installed capacity. Already completed buildings, however, should be connected to small wind electric systems according to the live loads of the buildings based on the architectural design criteria. In order to connect to a building that has already been completed, it is necessary to consider the load of the small wind electric system as well as the live load of building. In addition, we need to generate the maximum electricity possible by determining the maximum installed capacity in a small area. In this paper, we propose the method for determining maximum capacity for building integrated small wind electric systems, which takes into account the considerations associated with connecting small wind electric systems to completed buildings. This can be developed into a system linked to solar power, which makes it possible to improve the energy independence of the building. In addition, carbon dioxide reduction by improving energy efficiency is expected.

This paper describes aerodynamic characteristics of an Archimedes spiral wind turbine with various angles of attack. The range of angles was controlled from $-30^{\circ}$ (clockwise) to $+30^{\circ}$ (clockwise). The rotating speed of wind turbine at the same angle of attack in both directions was different. The reason why the-maximum rotational speed was observed at $15^{\circ}$ in clockwise direction can be explained based on angular momentum conservation. Quantitative flow visualization around Archimedes wind turbine blade was carried out between $-15^{\circ}$ (clockwise) and $+15^{\circ}$ (counter clockwise) using high resolution PIV method. The relationship between drag force and rotating speeds was discussed. From these results, optimum design on yawing system of Archimedes spiral wind turbine may provide high efficiency on small wind power system.
This paper proposes an application of energy storage devices (ESD) for low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) capability enhancement and power smoothening of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbine systems. A grid-side converter (GSC) is used to maintain the DC-link voltage. Meanwhile, a machine-side converter (MSC) is used to control the active and reactive powers independently. For grid disturbances, the generator output power can be reduced by increasing the generator speed, resulting in an increased inertial energy of the rotational body. Design and control techniques for the energy storage devices are introduced, which consist of current and power control loops. Also, the output power fluctuation of the generator due to wind speed variations can be smoothened by controlling the ESD. The validity of the proposed method has been verified by PSCAD/EMTDC simulation results for a 2 MW DFIG wind turbine system and by experimental results for a small-scale wind turbine simulator.
Vibrations of a wind turbine blade have a negative impact on its performance and result in failure of the blade, therefore an approach to effectively control vibration in turbine blades are sought by wind industry. The small domestic horizontal axis wind turbine blades induce flap wise (out-of-plane) vibration, due to varying wind speeds. These flap wise vibrations are transferred to the structure, which even causes catastrophic failure of the system. Shape memory alloys which possess physical property of variable stiffness across different phases are embedded into the composite blades for active vibration control. Previously Shape memory alloys have been used as actuators to change their angles and orientations in fighter jet blades but not used for active vibration control for wind turbine blades. In this work a GFRP blade embedded with Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) and tested for its vibrational and material damping characteristics, under martensitic and austenite conditions. The embedment portrays 47% reduction in displacement of blade, with respect to the conventional blade. An analytical model for the actuated smart blade is also proposed, which validates the harmonic response of the smart blade.

The objectives of this study are to improve the aerodynamics performance on the down-wind blade system with folding type blade which consists of the folding type rotor blade, wind vane yawing stabilizer and a bevel gearbox. The aerodynamics performance for the new wind turbine system are compared with those of the conventional up-wind blade system. In addition to, a novel multi voltage inverter system is applied for reductions of harmonic.
Vibration characteristics of a 6kW stand alone W/T(wind turbine) system are experimentally and theoretically investigated. Vibration resonance of the tower-cable system is monitored and the data are analysed and compared with the analytical results. To predict the resonance speed of the cable supported W/T, Rayleigh-Ritz method is applied to the tower-guy cable coupled system. Parametric study on the relation of the cable tension, cable elasticity and resonance frequency is carried out. Results of the study are utilized to design the stable structure of small size wind turbines which consist of a pivoted tower and guy cables.
In this study, operational vibration experiment and analysis have been conducted for the 4-blade small vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) including the effect of tower elastic behavior. Computational structural dynamics analysis method is applied to obtain Campbell diagram for the VAWT with elastic tower. An open type wind-tunnel is used to change and keep the wind velocity during the ground test. Equivalent elastic tower is used to support the VAWT so that the effect of elastic stiffness of the tower can be considered in the present vibration experiment. Various excitation conditions with wind loads are considered and the dominant operating vibration phenomena are physically investigated in detail.
