  • In this paper, a novel compact and wideband fylfot-shaped planar monopole antenna is proposed. The fylfot-shaped is suggested to reduce the volume of a general crossed planar monopole antenna. The volume of the proposed antenna is about 1/4 of a general crossed planar monopole antenna under the conditions where the wideband characteristics are maintained. This technique is suitable for the design of wideband planar monopole antenna which needed a small volume.

  • We designed and implemented a 3-dimensional structure internal antenna which has volume less than 1.5 cc for mobile phone to improve efficiency and gain. Multiple bending for the resonance of small internal antenna derives reduction of gain due to cancellation of antenna current. In this study, the current cancelation was reduced by the minimization of antenna bending. And the helix element was applied for the purpose both compensation of short antenna length and action of radiation element. For the verification of this study, a 1.5 cc volume 3D antenna which was fabricated by the press method applied to the dual band mobile phone. Measurement showed that efficiencies and gains under the slide down and up were 27.73 %, 0.29 dBi for the GSM band and 46.84 %, 2.27 dBi for the USPCS band, and had good performance under the small antenna volume. H-plane radiation pattern showed omnidirectional for the both band.

  • In this paper, a planar printed hybrid short/open-ended slot antenna with capacitive coupling feed strips is proposed for hepta-band mobile applications. The proposed antenna is comprised of a slotted ground plane on the top plane and two capacitive coupling feed strips with a chip inductor on the bottom plane. At the low frequency band, the short-ended long slot fed by strip 1 generates its half-wavelength resonance mode, whereas the T-shaped open ended slot fed by strip 2 generates its quarter-wavelength resonance mode for the high frequency band. The antenna provides a wide bandwidth covering GSM850/GSM900/DCS/PCS/UMTS/LTE2300/LTE2500 operation bands. Moreover, the antenna occupies a small volume of $15mm{\times}50mm{\times}1mm$. The operating principle of the proposed antenna and the simulation/measurement results are presented and discussed.

  • In this paper, the small loop antenna with a parasitic loop structure for penta-band mobile phone application is proposed. This antenna is composed of a feed monopole, a radiating loop antenna with a parasitic loop structure and an additional radiating element. The antenna is printed on the very thin flexible substrate to mount on the dielectric carrier with a volume of 40 mm$\times$11 mm$\times$3 mm. The bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 402 MHz(773~1,175 MHz) for low band and 583 MHz(1,622~2,205 MHz) for high band. As a result, the proposed antenna covers the five bands of GSM850, GSM900, DCS1800, PCS1,900 and WCDMA for a 3:1 VSWR. Moreover, the radiation pattern, gain and efficiency are appropriate for mobile handset. Therefore, this antenna is suitable for small sized multi-band mobile handset applications.

  • This paper presents the design of a novel small and wide band planar inverted F-antenna which simultaneously covers GSM900/GPS/DCS1800/DCS1900/DMB service. The proposed antenna consisting of a main patch with rectangular slit, strip 1 and strip 2, occupied the total volume of.$15\times36\times6mm^3$. A very wide impedance bandwidth characteristic was achieved by optimizing both the distance between the feed line and short strip and the length of rectangular slit on the main patch. The commercial electromagnetic software, CST Microwave Studio, is used to design the structure. The maximum gains at the frequencies of 900, 1575, 1800, 1900, and 2600 MHz were 2.07, 1.07, 1.69 and 0.55, -1.99 dBi, respectively. The overall shape of the radiation patterns is suitable for mobile communication application.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of the electromagnetically coupled small broadband disk-loaded monopole antenna with multiple shorting pins. The electromagnetically coupled monopole antenna can achieve broad bandwidth by controlling resonant frequency of the rectangular disk-loaded monopole and a probe with the spiral strip line monopole. The number and arrangement of the shorting pin affect the capacitance of the disk. The variation of the capacitance changes resonant frequency of the antenna, and therefore, its electrical sizes and frequency bandwidth are also affected. The antenna with three shorting pins has a volume of $0.094\lambda_0{\times}0.094\lambda_0{\times}0.094\lambda_0$ in electrical length and the frequency bandwidth of $26.8\%\;for\;VSWR\leq2$ with the center frequency at 2.556 GHz.

  • In this paper, a novel triple-band planar inverted F antenna(PIFA) is proposed. The goal of this paper is to design a small antenna which is operated in triple band. Using T-shape slit and stacked U-shape parasitic patch, good impedance matching is achieved in three band. T-shape slit is inserted on the main patch in order to effectively control the excited patch surface current distributions. The proposed antenna occupies a small volume of $26{\times}9.5{\times}6mm^3$, and the obtained impedance bandwidths cover the required operating bandwidths of the GPS(1565-1585MHz), IMT-2000(1885-2200MHz) and Bluetooth (2400-2484MHz) bands.

  • An internal antenna which has 1 cc volume was implemented on the FPCB(Flexible Printed Circuit Board) for the mobile phone. We increased antenna gain and efficiency by the applying of current direction concept on the antenna pattern for this small antenna. Short antenna length for the GSM band was compensated by the spiral inductor on the FPCB. For broadening bandwidth on GSM band, it's applied 2 spiral inductors. A conductor pattern for the DCS band was positioned perpendicular with the FPCB. Antenna was implemented on FPCB that is dielectric constant 4.4 and thickness 0.05 mm, and FPCB was attached on a carrier dimensioned $L{\times}W{\times}H=30{\times}7{\times}5\;mm$. Measurements showed that max. VSWR 2:1, efficiency 42.49~60.95 % and 47.95~73.21 %, average gain -3.72~-2.15 dBi and -3.19~-1.35 dBi on the GSM and DCS band, respectively. These results are good performances among the small antenna. And the radiation patterns are omnidirectional on the H-plane to both band.

  • The novel internal monopole chip antenna of penta-band operation for GSM850/GSM900/DCS/USPCS/WCDMA bands for mobile phones is proposed. This antenna occupies a small volume $8\times3.2\times20mm^3$ and is suitable to be embedded in a mobile phone as an internal antenna. The minimization of the proposed antenna was realized by using spiral line structure and meander line structure on FR-4 of dielectric$(\varepsilon_r=4.4)$. The designed antenna has the wide-band operation in the upper band by overlapping high order resonances. The measured bandwidth of this antenna (VSWR>3) is 150MHz$(1,030\sim1,180\;MHz)$ in the lower band operation and 650 MHz$(1,760\sim2,410\;MHz)$ in higher band operation. The measured radiation efficiency within bandwidth(VSWR 3:1) is over 50 %. The antenna has been designed by a commercial software HFSS.
