Analytically induced wear mechanism of elastic body under Hertzian contact is applied in acutual wear test of ceramics. There are two types of wear in ceramics, a large scale wear and a small scale wear. The large scale wear is commensurable with Hertzian contact area and the small scale wear with real contact area. Nondimensional parameter, S$_{c}$, is introduced and fully examined to estimate or predict wear rate of ceramics. Ceramic wear for S$_{c}$.leq.0.8 is in small scale wear and for S$_{c}$;geq.1.6 in large scale wear. wear.
Scanning electron microscopic observations were carried out on the worn surface and the wear debris of ceramic materials to investigate the wear mechanism of those in dry rolling contact. It was found from the scanning electron microscopic observations that the wear in ceramic materials is related to brittle fracture and has two types of wear mechanisms, small scale wear and larvae scare wear. Plate-like wear debris were created from the initial surface cracks and defects. The small scale wear was related to real contact area and large scale wear was related to HertzJan contact area. A wear model was proposed on the basis of scanning electron microscopic observations.

This paper presents a numerical technique to analyze wear life of automotive disk brake pad, where FFT-FEM method is adopted to determine the transient temperature distribution of the disk surface. A specimen ova frictional material is tested on a small scale brake dynamometer to find the dependency of the wear rate on temperature change, from which and the temperature analysis results, given the wear test mode, wear behavior of the pad material fur the vehicle can be predicted. Numerical examples show the predicted wear life of the vehicle coincides with the manufacture's recommended time interval for replacing the pads.

Electric discharge machining drill (EDM-drill) is an efficient process for the fabrication of micro-diameter deep metal hole. As there is non-physical contact between tool (electrode) and workpiece, EDM-drill is widely used to machine the hard machining materials such as high strength steel, cemented carbide, titanium alloys. The electro-thermal energy forces the electrode to wear out together with the workpiece to be machined. The electrode wear occurs inside of a machining hole. and It causes hard to monitor the machining state, which leads the productivity and the quality to decrease. Thus, this study presents a methodology to estimated the electrode wear amount while two coefficients (scale factor and shape factor) of the logarithmic regression model are evaluated from the experiment result. To increase the accuracy of estimation model, the linear transformation method is adopted using the differences of initial electrode wear differences. The estimation model is verified through experiment. The experimental result shows that within minute error, the estimation model is able to predict accurately.
"Biomimetics" is the study and simulation of biological systems with desired properties. In recent times, biomimetic surfaces have emerged as novel solutions for tribological applications in micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). These biomimetic surfaces are attractive for MEMS application as they exhibit low adhesion/friction and wear properties at small-scales. In this paper, we present some of the examples of biomimetic surfaces that have potential application in small-scale devices.

The purposes of this study were to assess current status of respirator usage among workers in the small-scale industries and to identify those factors causing respirator wearers not to continuously wear respirators during work. Total 168 workers participated voluntarily in the survey. In order to cover all possible reasons, though not exclusive, 33 diverse questions were developed based upon the results in the published literatures and from researchers' own experience. The most common type of respirator worn was the disposable single-use respirator(42%). However, masks made of gauze, which should not be considered as a respirator, were widely used (38%). Only 28% of respondents indicated they wear respirators continuously during work. The major reasons for removing respirators include, in descending order of frequency, difficulty in breathing (46%), sweating (39%), bothered by frequent removal (21%), inadequate mask size (19%) and hot air temperature inside the respirator (19%), etc. In addition, minor reasons including mask design, administrative, and personal reasons were also identified. These reasons should be considered in a well designed respirator program in order to improve workers' acceptance and usage of respirators.
Three different kinds of brake discs including two coated brake discs and one steel disc were tested under the same experimental conditions on a reduced scale braking test bench. A braking test bench was specially designed to analyse thermo-mechanical and frictional behaviors of two types of brake with different sizes in stop and hold braking modes. Plasma spray coating technique was also used to coat the discs with ceramic powder. During the test four commercial brake pads were coupled with discs. Ceramic coated discs showed good stability in friction coefficient at high speed and high energy braking conditions. But they caused large wear loss of pad mass compared with the steel disc. It was shown that thermal barrier effect in ceramic coated discs adjusted the thermal partition between pad and disc. For a steel disc. it showed fluctuating friction coefficient at high speed but small wear loss of pad mass compared with ceramic coated discs.

Metallic sintered brake pads are often applied to mid/high speed train due to their high strength and thermal characteristics. Imbalance contact between discs and pads can greatly influence the life span, one sided wear, discs attack/crack and threat the safety of the train during operation. In this research, we analyzed pressure/temperature distribution between brake pads and disks. Analyzed data had been verified and modified to conduct further tests of flexible brake pads with small/full-scale dynamo test. Flexible brake pads were installed to high speed train to conduct further tests to identify the differences between rigid brake pads and flexible brake pads. In result, Flexible brake pads showed outstanding disk thermal stability, one sided wear, noise and wear rate than rigid brake pad.

To clarify the characteristics of surface damage due to fretting in press-fitted shaft, experimental methods were applied to small scale specimen with different bending load condition. Fatigue tests and interrupted fatigue tests of press-fitted specimen were carried out by rotate bending fatigue test. Macroscopic and microscopic characteristics were examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM), optical microscope or profilometer. It is found that small fatigue cracks are nucleated early in life regardless of bending stress, and thus the most portion of fatigue life on press fits can be considered to be crack propagation process. Most of surface cracks are initiated near the contact edge, and multiple cracks are nucleated and interconnected. Furthermore, the fretting wear rates at the contact edge are increased rapidly at the initial stage of total fatigue life. It is thus suggested that the fatigue crack nucleation and propagation process is strongly related to the evolution of surface profile by fretting wear in press fits.
