  • With the recent increase in the development of military drones, they are adopted and used as the combat system of battalion level or higher. However, it is difficult to use drones that can be used in battles below the platoon level due to the current conditions for the formation of units in the Korean military. In this paper, therefore, we developed a program drones equipped with a thermal imaging camera and LiDAR sensor for reconnaissance and exploration that can be applied in battles below the platoon level. Using these drones, we studied the possibility and feasibility of drones for small-scale combats that can find hidden enemies, search for an appropriate detour through image processing and conduct reconnaissance and search for battlefields, hiding and cover-up through image processing. In addition to the purpose of using the proposed drone to search for an enemies lying in ambush in the battlefield, it can be used as a function to check the optimal movement path when a combat unit is moving, or as a function to check the optimal place for cover-up or hiding. In particular, it is possible to check another route other than the route recommended by the program because the features of the terrain can be checked from various viewpoints through 3D modeling. We verified the possiblity of flying by designing and assembling in a form of adding LiDAR and thermal imaging camera module to a drone assembled based on racing drone parts, which are open source hardware, and developed autonomous flight and search functions which can be used even by non-professional drone operators based on open source software, and then installed them to verify their feasibility.

  • North Korea's rapidly advancing drone development and operational capabilities have become a significant threat to South Korea's security. The drone incursions by North Korea in 2014, 2017, and 2022 demonstrate the technological advancement and provocative potential of North Korean drones. This study aims to closely analyze the military threats posed by North Korean drones and seek effective countermeasures. The research examines the development level of North Korean drone technology, its military applications, the characteristics and patterns of recent drone incursions, the adequacy and limitations of South Korea's current response systems, and future countermeasures. For this purpose, domestic and international research literature and media reports were reviewed, and specific North Korean drone incursion cases were analyzed. The results indicate that North Korea's small drones possess technological features such as small size, low altitude, low-speed flight, long-duration flight, and reconnaissance equipment. These drones pose threats that can be utilized for reconnaissance, surveillance, surprise attacks, and terrorism. Additionally, South Korea's current response systems reveal limitations such as inadequate detection and identification capabilities, low interception success rates, lack of an integrated response system, and insufficient specialized personnel and equipment. Therefore, this study suggests various technical, policy, and international cooperative countermeasures, including the development of drone detection and identification technologies, the utilization of diverse drone neutralization technologies, the establishment of legal and institutional foundations, the construction of a cooperative framework among relevant agencies, and the strengthening of international cooperation. The study particularly emphasizes the importance of raising awareness of the North Korean drone threat across South Korean society and unifying national efforts to respond to these threats.

  • The development of innovative technology through the 4th Industrial Revolution is actively used in the defense field. In particular, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities using drones will be of great help to the development of military combat capabilities, such as preparing for future military personnel reductions and reinforcing alert capabilities. In this study, we analyze the combat efficiency of drones how helpful drones can be to the military operations through simulations. Drones and enemy move in the efficient shortest path within a two-dimensional space in which operational areas are mapped into number such as detection probability. Based on the detection probability of an enemy infiltrating along the path with the lowest detection probability, the detection probability change that occurs whenever a drone is additionally deployed is presented, and we analyze the combat efficiency according to the additional drone input. Simulation proves that the increase in combat efficiency decreases as more drones are added in small operational areas such as company-level operational areas. This study is expected to contribute to the efficient operation of a limited number of drones in company-level units and to help determine the most desirable quantity of drones for additional combat power improvement.

  • The Ukraine-Russia war is a testing ground for High-Tech weapons and the first full-scale drone warfare. The Ukrainian military has been aggressively deploying a variety of reconnaissance and attack drones on the battlefield, and more recently, FPV drones, also known as racing drones, have been fitted with bombs as a game-changer in small-unit combat. To better understand these FPV drones, this article reviews their definition, aircraft components, and key characteristics, and draws implications from the Ukrainian military's FPV combat experience. In the future, the combination of artificial intelligence and swarming technology will make FPV drones even more lethal. Accordingly, the need to develop FPV drones suitable for the future operational environment on the Korean Peninsula is increasing, and follow-up research is needed to specify fighting methods and optimize related technologies.
