  • This research confirms a non-linear relationship between R&D investment and performance of small and medium-sized enterprises and measures the adequate level as threshold value. Although previous studies did not consider the time lag and estimated indirectly the level using the R&D investment squared term, this study assumes 2 years time lag and uses the threshold estimation model to measure directly. We find that there is the S-curve relationship between the profit rate as R&D output and R&D intensity and the ratio of researchers to employees as R&D input. Also, we estimate the adequate levels of R&D investment, 6.4% for R&D intensity and 13% for the ratio of researchers to employees. This relationship and measurement of the level can offer basic facts and implications about R&D policy and strategy.

  • This study is an empirical research to find out the effect on the management performance of hidden champions of food manufacturing companies when using blue ocean strategy for new product development. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, we conducted a questionnaire survey on hidden champions in the domestic food manufacturing industry and proceeded empirical analysis. When small and medium-sized enterprises in food manufacturing industries develop a new product, searching for non-customer, rebuilding the market boundary, and linking the external networks have a significant impact on their management performance. However, the fair procedure did not have a significant effect on the management performance. In terms of relative influence, rebuilding the market boundary was most affecting, followed by searching for non-customer and linking the external networks. On the other hand, this study implicated the management performance of hidden champions of food manufacturing industries when new products is developed by using the blue ocean strategy. Obtained results are as follows. If small and medium-sized enterprises of food manufacturing industries develop new products, it will be able to improve the management performance by utilizing strategies such as searching for non-customer, rebuilding the market boundary, and linking the external networks. In particular, the rebuilding the market boundary among the blue ocean strategies has a relatively high impact on management performance.

  • As Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs)' dependency on major companies is increasing every day, the importance of the IT collaboration between those is being highlighted more than ever. However, the information level of the SMEs is much inferior and lack of capital, low level of management and the problem of the informatization are being raised. Therefore, the methods to improve the level of the infrastructure for the informatization need to be performed based on the current status of the SMEs. In this paper, we proposed the ways to manage key performance indicators(KPI) of each business process by inducing and prioritizing the KPIs which has higher accomplishment compared to its management rate. As the result of the present study reflects the priorities of KPIs, it may contribute to the accomplishment of the efficient informatization that considers the enterprise's size.

  • In this study, a correlation between execution of quality management activities and their results was verified by applying the Malcolm Baldrige model (hereafter referred to as the MB model) as a quality management performance measurement indicator for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in South Korea. To achieve this goal, we need to determine whether the categorical requirements in the MB model are recognized consistently in SMEs, as a prerequisite. To this end, factor analysis was conducted for measurement variables in each category, which revealed that the process indicator was made up of six factors and the outcome indicator was made up of five factors, like those configured in the MB model. This result can be interpreted to mean that the requirements in each category of the MB model were well produced and recognized consistently throughout SMEs in South Korea. In addition, the analysis of causality between the process indicator (quality management activities) and the outcome indicator (management results) showed high causality between them. Although the quality management levels of SMEs in South Korea are inferior to those of conglomerates or other national quality award-winning companies, this study is significant in that the causality between quality management activities and results was verified, since this study targeted SMEs in South Korea as the target of investigation. Thus, it is empirically proven that the MB model can contribute to improved management results for SMEs in Korea.

  • The first, this study analyzed empirically the effects of the ties(structural) and the trust(relational) between the clients(small and medium sized enterprises) and consultants on the consulting performance, the second, verified the moderating effects of the consultant's competence and the client's participation in the effect of the ties and the trust on the consulting performance. The result of empirical analysis was as follows. The ties and the competence based trust had a positive effects on the consulting performance. Meanwhile, the client's participation had no moderating effect, the consultant's competence moderated the effect of the ties and the trust on the consulting performance. From the above empirical analysis, we appreciated that the building of the strong ties and the trust between the client and consultant is very important to promote consulting performance with the enhancing the consultant's competence.

Also, it goes without saying that small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) do the key roles of regional economic growth. This paper indicates that the innovative capabilities of SMEs are the crucial factors of the success of Regional Innovation Cluster. In order to improve SMEs' capabilities for innovation, knowledges are vital including codified knowledge or tacit knowledge. In cluster, the linkages especially among researchers and factory workers is important to innovative activities, and universities have to of for knowledge, education programs and new researchers fully qualified to SMEs. Also, regional governments and medias positively participate the cluster as helpers. Based upon the research results, some policy implications have been suggested concerning the policy supports to enhance innovative activities of SMEs within the Regional innovation Cluster.

  • Purpose - In this study, we explore the relationship between the degree of internationalization (DOI) and firm performance (DOI-P) of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector. Specifically, we investigate whether the costs and benefits dynamics concerning the internationalization of SMEs differ between high-tech and non-high-tech industries. Design/methodology - We extend the prior literature on this relationship by employing 5-year data on 589 Korean SMEs in the manufacturing sector and examining the moderating impact of the industry characteristics. Our findings reveal a U-shaped relationship between the DOI and SME performance. High-tech SMEs demonstrate an inverted U-shaped relationship, whereas non-hightech SMEs exhibit a U-shaped relationship. Findings - Our findings illustrate the importance of the industry factor in testing the performance impact of the internationalization of Korean SMEs. By incorporating industry dynamics, our results indicate that the DOI-P relationship depends on the context of the industry in which an SME operates. High-tech SMEs also display a higher DOI but are outperformed by non-high-tech SMEs for the entire internationalization path, which implies that high-tech SMEs face more challenges than non-high-tech SMEs while seeking internationalization. Originality/value - The findings strongly validate that significant benefits exist for SMEs undertaking internationalization. We also employ the contextual framework contributing to increasing the understanding of the intrinsic value of internationalization and resolving the mixed results issue on the DOI-P relationship, by illustrating that the industry factor leads to different dynamics of costs and benefits of SME internationalization; it also determines the shape and direction of the relationship.
