Gas turbine disk components have been used by Ni-base superalloys which have high temperature strength for enduring stress induced by high speed rotation. This study introduced the overview of development strategy of precision forging of turbine disk and closed-die forging process for manufacturing good quality gas turbine disk. To make superior quality turbine disk, it is important to select optimal forging process conditions like preform shape, die shape and forging temperature etc. In this paper, closed-die forging process has been studied through the rigid-plastic finite element simulation. Proposed forging process can be used for the successful manufacturing of small-size gas turbine disk.

A turbo fan engine performance analysis and the optimization using particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm have been conducted to investigate the effects of major performance design parameters of an aircraft gas turbine engine. The FJ44-2C turbofan engine, which is widely used in the small business jet, CJ2 has been selected as the basic model. The design parameters consists of the bypass ratio, burner exit temperature, HP compressor ratio, fan inlet mass flow, and nozzle cooling air ratio. The sensitivity analysis of the parameters has been evaluated and the optimization of the parameters has been performed to achieve high net thrust or low specific fuel consumption.

Small size gas turbine disk requires good mechanical strength and creep properties at high temperature. In this study, Waspaloy was used as a superalloy to satisfy these specifications. The control of microstructure was needed to satisfy material properties at high temperature. In order to do this, we studied forging conditions and material analysis. Therefore die and preform design conducted so that hot forged gas turbine disk could have a good microstructure. The die and preform shapes are designed with consideration of the predefined hydraulic press capacity and the microstructure of forging product. Also we carried out the hot compression test for Waspaloy in various test conditions. From these results, we obtained the forging conditions as material temperature, die velocity etc. To verify these forging conditions, we conducted FE simulations by means of the DEFORM 2D-HT. In this study, the hot closed die and preform designs were completed to offer high temperature material properties of a small size gas turbine.

Micro gas turbine engine is well known as a power plant of unmanned aerial vehicle and a small scale emergency generation system and also, it is significant as initial research of large gas turbine and educational purpose of gas turbine. Many sort of Micro gas turbine test set for education is produced by several manufacturers, but all of the engine control system of them is separated with data acquisition system; moreover, the engine control algorithms are inaccessible and related variables could not be collected. In this investigation, the Integrated Modifiable Test Rig which has modifiable engine start-up, drive and situational control logics is developed by LabVIEW with I/O devices and it provides wide experimental applicability to studies of dynamic characteristics of fuel system and combustion instability.

Small gas turbine engines are used in aircraft as an auxiliary power unit (APU) to supply compressed air to start the main engine and for emergency electricity. When an aircraft is operating in an environment in which sand and dust is present in the ambient air, the engines as well as the APU ingest the sand and dust. This causes erosion of the engine and a degradation in its performance. The present study investigated the effect of sand and dust ingestion on small gas turbine engines. The concentration of sand and dust was $4.4{\times}10^{-5}kg$ per unit kg of air, which follows the specification in MIL-E-8593. The test was conducted for 10 h, and the engine performance before and after the test was compared. In addition, a tear-down inspection was conducted to examine the erosion patterns of sub-components such as the impeller and turbine wheel.

A core engine for pre-cooled turbojet engines is designed and its component performances are examined both by CFD analyses and experiments. The engine is designed for a flight demonstration of precooled turbojet engine cycle. The engine uses gas hydrogen as fuel. The external boundary including measurement devices is set within $23cm{\times}23cm$ of rectangular cross section, in order to install the engine downstream of the air intake. The rotation speed is 80000 rpm at design point. Mixed flow compressor is selected to attain high pressure ratio and small diameter by single stage. Reverse type main combustor is selected to reduce the engine diameter and the rotating shaft length. The temperature at main combustor is determined by the temperature limit of non-cooled turbine. High loading turbine is designed to attain high pressure ratio by single stage. The firing test of the core engine is conducted using components of small pre-cooled turbojet engine. Gas hydrogen is injected into the main burner and hot gas is generated to drive the turbine. Air flow rate of the compressor can be modulated by a variable geometry exhaust nozzle, which is connected downstream of the core engine. As a result, 75% rotation speed is attained without hazardous vibration and heat damage. Aerodynamic performances of both compressor and turbine are obtained and evaluated independently.

An airbreathing propulsion system of a subsonic cruise missile is mainly composed of a small gas turbine engine, air intake and vehicle's fuel tank. The propulsion system integration work started from engine acceptance test is finally closed by ground functional test of the missile's propulsion section, after some modifications of engine's sub-components, development of engine-related onboard systems, interface analyses, and tests. The whole process and stepwise technologies of this system integration work are described herein.
Turbine inlet temperature is steadily increasing to achieve high specific thrust and efficiency of gas turbine engines. Turbine cooling technology is essential to increase turbine inlet temperature. For this study, a small or medium sized aircraft engine of 10,000 lbf class with the turbine inlet temperature of $1,400^{\circ}C$, the engine overall pressure ratio of 32.2, and the bypass ratio of 5 was set as the baseline model and its performance analysis was performed at the design point. The engine has the performance of 10,013 lbf thrust and the specific fuel consumption of 0.362 lbm/hr/lbf. The thrust and the specific fuel consumption of the baseline model were compared with those of similar class engines. Based on these results, the turbine design requirements were assigned. In addition, the parametric analysis of the engine, related to aerodynamic and cooling design of the high pressure turbine, was performed. Based on the baseline model engine, the influence of turbine inlet temperature, cooling flow ratio, and high pressure turbine efficiency variations on the engine performance was analyzed.

The accurate prediction of dynamic characteristics of high speed rotors, such as gas turbines, is important to avoid the possibility of operating the machinery near the critical speeds or unstable speed regions. However, the dynamic analysis methods and softwares for gas turbines have been developed in the process of producing many gas turbines by manufacturers and most of them have seldom been disclosed to the public. Recently, commercial FEM softwares, such as SAMCEF, ANSYS and NASTRAN, started supporting some rotordynamics analysis modules based on 3-D finite elements. In this paper, the dynamic analysis method using commercial S/W, especially ANSYS, is attempted for the small-size gas turbine engine rotor, and the analysis capability and limitations of its rotordyamics module are evaluated for further improvement of the module. As the preliminary procedure, the rotordyamic analysis capability of ANSYS was tested and evaluated with the reference models of the well-known dynamics. The limitations in application of the rotordynamics module were then identified. Under the current capability and limitations of ANSYS, it is shown that Lee diagram, a new frequency-speed diagram enhanced with the concept of $H{\infty}$ in rotating machinery, can be indirectly obtained from FRFs computed from harmonic response analysis of ANSYS. Finally, it is demonstrated based on the modeling and analysis method developed in the process of the S/W verification that the conventional Campbell diagram, Lee diagram, mode shapes and critical speeds of the small-size gas turbine engine rotor can be computed using the ANSYS rotordynamics module.
