  • This study was conducted to investigate the strength of soil cement for varied curing temperatures (0,10,20,30,40,50,60$^{\circ}C$) and cement content (3,6,9,12%) in four cement-stabilized soils (KY: sand, MH: sand, SS: sandy loam, JJ:loam). The experimental results obtained from unconfined compressive strength tests were as follows: 1. According to increase of curing temperature as 30,40,50, and 60$^{\circ}C$, the unconfiened compressive strength of soil cement increased, the rate of increase in the early curing period was large, and around 120 hours was suifficient curing time to complete hardening. 2. The strength at 10$^{\circ}C$ decreased to the rate of 30 to 40 percent than that of 20$^{\circ}C$ while the strength at 0$^{\circ}C$ was very small, strength of soil cement increased in cold weather unless that the temperature was below 0$^{\circ}C$ 3. The average maximum temperature, about 30$^{\circ}C$ during July and August in Korea may be recommended for a optimum construction period to increase the strength of soil cement. 4. Accelerated curing time that strength was equivalent to 28-Day norma1 curing decreased in accordance with the increase of curing temperature, and also accelerated curing decreased the effect of cement content. Accelerated curing that strength was equivalent to 28-day normal curing for soil cement of cement content 9% and temperature 60$^{\circ}C$ was 45 hours; KY, 50 hours: MH, 40 hours; SS, 34 hours; JJ. 5. According to the increase of the percent passing of No. 200 sieve, accelerated curing times became shorter to become the required stength. 6. Relation between accelerated curing times and normal curing days was showeda linear of which slope decreased in accordance with the increase of curing temperature, it may be expressed as follows: (1). 30$^{\circ}C$ t=3.6d+6(r=0.97) (2). 40$^{\circ}C$ t=3.2d-5.1(r=0.95) (3). 50$^{\circ}C$ t=2.1d-4.0(r=0.93) (4). 60$^{\circ}C$ t=1.4d+4.0(r=0.90) in which t=accelerate curing time. d=normal curing day. 7. Accelerated curing time that the strength was equivalent to 35kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ which was the strength of cement brick was 96 hours at temperature 30$^{\circ}C$ to SS 9%, and 120 hours at temperature 50$^{\circ}C$ to JJ 9%, Consequently, a economic soil cement brick may be made in future.

  • It is very urgent to research the proper recycling method of marine dredged soil as construction material for environmental conservation. Couple of developed countries have been lots of related researches on recycling of marine dredged soil for marine environmental conservation. This is highly imperative in our country. A small-scaled model test for underground pipe has been conducted on the use of controlled low strength materials with marine dredged soil. The flexible pipe, which is called PVC, was used. Four different testing materials, such as natural sand, insitu-soil, sand-CLSM with marine dredged soil and insitu-soil CLSM with marine dredged soil, were used. The vertical and lateral displacement of pipe with CLSM is one tenth of common granular materials. Also, the use of CSLM showed lower lateral and vertical pressure than that of common granular materials. The main reason is the effect of cement hardening of CLSM. This could increase of the stiffness of pipe with backfill materials. In this study, the data presented show that marine dredged soil and in-situ soil can be successfully used in CLSM and reduce the deformation and earth pressure on flexible pipe.

  • A major purpose of this study is to develop a drainage system that can quickly drain water penetrated into pavement layers to mitigate pot holes which is one of the major distress types in bridge deck pavements. This system can be established by applying a thin drainage layer between waterproof and pavement layers. The most important elements for this system are the performance of waterproof layer and construction technique for the thin drainage layer. The porous asphalt mix with the maximum aggregate size of 10mm is first developed based on the porous asphalt mix design guide proposed by NCAT, and various physical and mechanical tests are performed to confirm that the porous mix satisfies all the specification requirements. In addition, a series of laboratory tests including low-temperature bending and bonding strength tests for the MMA(Methyl Methacrylate) type of waterproofing material. It is observed from the tests that the MMA material satisfies all the specification requirements. To evaluate the Reld performance of the drainage system, a field study has been conducted on a relatively small size bridge. The QC/QA tests are conducted on the both waterproofing and pavement materials. It has been found that the drainage system works well to drain the water penetrated into the pavement layers.

  • The estuary in Nakdong River has changes by the construction of harbors, land reclamation and artificial waterway changes. These resultslead to changes of extinction and creation of deltaic barrier island. The deltaic barrier island changes in the Nakdong River estuary affect the function of the barrier islands and cause environmental changes. Therefore, it is important to monitor the changes in the area of the Nakdong estuary. In this study, long-term changes of the area and suspended sediment of deltaic barrier island in the Nakdong River estuary were analyzed using Landsat TM/ETM+ images. As a result, end point rate (EPR) values of shoreline in Jinwoodo and Sinjado are about 5m/yr and about 50 m/yr, respectively. The EPR values of north-south and east-west direction in Doyodeung are 20 m/yr and -20 ~ 10 m/yr. The suspended sediment concentration (SSC) has a maximum value of $25g/m^3$ in the vicinity of Jinwoodo and Sinjado, while it has a maximum concentration of $40g/m^3$ in the vicinity of Shinjido and Doyodeung. In other words, the area and the SSC change are small in Jinwoodo, and the area change and the SSC variation are large in Sinjado and Doyodeung. As a result of analysis of correlation between area change and SSC variation using all data, the Pearson coefficient value (r) is 0.36 and it is 0.32 in winter data. In other words, it is considered that the SSC variation affectsthe deltatic barrier island area change. However, verification using advanced altimetry data is necessary in the future. These studies can be used for coastal monitoring and environmental monitoring.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze design flood estimation methods which are the basis for determining the size of a flood control structure. The result from a flood frequency analysis which is considered as the best way for estimating design flood was assumed as a true value, and a method of simulating runoff and performing frequency analysis of the maximum discharge data were compared with a design storm method. For a comparative analysis of design flood estimation, seven basins (Namgang reservoir basin, Soyanggang reservoir basin, Andong reservoir basin, Seomjingang reservoir basin, Imha reservoir basin, Chungju reservoir basin, Hapcheon reservoir basin) were selected. For the Seomjingang, Hapcheon, and Imha reservoir basins, the method proposed in this study showed better results, whereas the conventional method showed better results for the Namgang, Soyanggang, and Chungju reservoir basins. The results show that the conventional method (the design storm method) is not the best way for estimating design flood and the proposed method can be used as an alternative for small basins.

  • The geochemical and mineralogical investigation on the rocks and repair material comprising of the Sungryemun (The 1st National Treasure) has been made. Rock of the Sungryemun is highly weathered coarse-grained calc-alkali granite. The rock consists mainly of quartz, perthite, plagioclase and biotite with small amounts of orthoclase, muscovite, chlorite and sericite, which are major weathering products from perthite. For obtaining informations about degree of weathering, mineral composition of the original rock calculated by CIPW norm and weathered rock composition determined by XRD quantitative analysis were plotted on a ternary diagram of quartz-potash feldspar-plagioclase. Original rock compositions are plotted on the central granite area. whereas weathered ones are plotted on the granite area close to quartz. The result means that quartz is more abundant in weathered rock, due to selective chemical weathering of potash feldspar and plagioclase over quartz. On the whole, surface of the rocks were black-coated, exfoliated and highly fractured due to the physical and chemical weathering and heavy load has made the cracks in the lower parts of the stone construction. Also, cement and nails, which was used as repair material, during the repair work in the early 1960's, has accelerated the weathering process. Furthermore, weathered conditions of repair materials are very severe. Therefore, it is very urgent to establish of the conservation plan for the Sungryemun.

  • We present a new design for an endoscope objective lens composed of a lexible fiber bundle with 30,000 core, and a gradient-index (GRIN) objective lens with an optical adaptor. The characteristic of this objective lens is to be minimally-invasive to be able to insert easily in the internal organs of live animals. The GRIN lens has a small diameter and a very simple construction, which is selected with the diameter of 1.0 mm and numerical aperture of 0.5 to achieve a minimally-invasive outer diameter and a high resolution. The resultant designed lens shows the performance as follows; a lateral resolution of 1.63 um and diameters of 100% encircled energy of $0.3\;{\mu}m$ and $0.83\;{\mu}m$ for the on-axis and the off-axis image point, respectively. Also, we can present a cheap solution with a lateral resolution of 1.74 um and diameters of 100% encircled energy of $1.10\;{\mu}m$ and $2.84\;{\mu}m$ for the on-axis and the off-axis image point, respectively.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the lateral earth pressure and the stability of small scale retaining wall with waste foundry sand(WFS) mixtures as a controlled low strength materials (CLSM). Three different types of WFS, like Green WFS, Hurane WFS and Coated WFS, were used in this study, and fly ash of Class F type was adopted. To evaluate the lateral earth pressure and the stability of retaining wall, two different samll scale retaining wall tests, which are called an artificially controlled strain method and a natural strain method, were carried out. In case of an artificially controlled strain method, the coefficient of lateral earth pressure, just after backfilling of WF mixtures, was around 0.8 to 1.0, and most of earth pressure was dissipated within 12 hours. In case of a natural strain method, two steps of stage constructions were employed. The mixtures of Hurane WFS and Coated WFS showed fast decrease of earth pressure due to a relatively good drainage. Judging from the sta bility of retaining wall for overturning and sliding, two steps of stage construction for 2 days were enough to finish the backfill of 6-m height of retaining wall. Also, considering the curling effect of WFS mixtures, the stability of retaining wall increased as curling time increased.

  • It has been pointed out that the collapses of unsaturated road embankments caused by earthquake are attributed to high water content caused by the seepage of the underground water and/or the rainfall infiltration. Hence, it is important to study influences of water content on the dynamic stability and deformation mode of unsaturated road embankments for development of a proper design scheme including an effective reinforcement to prevent severe damage. This study demonstrates dynamic centrifugal model tests with different water contents to investigate the effect of water content on deformation and failure behaviors of unsaturated road embankments. Based on the measurement of displacement, the pore water pressure and the acceleration during dynamic loading, dynamic behavior of the unsaturated road embankments with about optimum water content and the higher water content than the optimum one have been examined. In addition, an image analysis has revealed the displacement field and the distributions of strains in the road embankment, by which deformation mode of the road embankment with higher water content has been clarified. It has been confirmed that in the case of higher water content the settlement of the crown is large mainly owing to the volume compression underneath the crown, while the small confining pressure at the toe and near the slope surface induces large shear deformation with volume expansion.
