In general, the electric motor for driving the centrifuge of Decanter type is selected based on the power(starting power) necessary to start the bowl and the screw shaft. However the operation cost of the machine is dependent on the power needed at a steadily operating condition, including the power against the bearing friction and that for the sludge removal. In this paper, the formulation for the sludge-removal power is presented. Sample calculation for a specific design shows that the sludge-removal power is increased with the friction coefficient. It also reveals that the power is mainly dependent on the length of the screw blade rather than the beach angle. Further it is shown that the power increases in square of the rotational speed of the machine.
In this paper, we derived the formula for estimating the power of the electric motors needed to operate the Decanter-type centrifuge. In the derivation of the formula the sludge-removal torque is to be supplied from the formula derived in the first paper. The intricate nature of the transmission mechanism in the planetary gear trains of the sludge-removal power and torque has been clarified in this second paper. In particular we considered two-motor system, where the main motor drives the machine while the differential-speed control motor plays the role of braking in adjusting the differential speed. Sample calculation for the specific design treated in the first paper showed that the selection criterion for the main motor depends on the lower limit of the differential speed; when the lower limit is set low, it should be selected based on the steadily operating power, while it should be selected based on the starting power when the lower limit is set high. The total power required by both the main motor and the differential-speed control motor increases as the differential speed is decreased. It is suggested that the power loss in the differential-speed control motor could be minimized by attaching an electric generator to it.
In this paper, permanent magnets were used to remove magnetic sludge in the condenser of the power plant. To obtain the flow characteristics and magnetic information that are needed for determining a proper design of the magnetics sludge removal apparatus, numerical simulations were performed through the use of two commercial codes, ANSYS Workbench-Emag and CFX. Experiments were also performed on various kinds and sizes of magnets to obtain the magnetic information through a gauss meter. By analyzing the results of simulations and experiments, the minimum magnetic force that is able to remove the any size of the magnetic sludge in the condenser was calculated, and the design of the removal apparatus was confirmed. The test model which was confirmed by simulations and experiments was made. After testing, the test results were compared with those of numerical simulations and have good agreements.
It is recommended to clean steam generators of nuclear power plants during plant outages. Under normal operations, sludge is created and constantly accumulates in the steam generators. The constituents of this sludge are different depending on each power plant characteristics. The sludge of the Kori Unit 1 steam generator, far example, was found to be composed of 93% ferrous oxide, 3% carbon and 1% of silica oxide and nickel oxide each. The research to develop a lancing system that would remove sludge deposits from the tubesheet of a steam generator was started in 1998 by the Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) of the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). The first commercial domestic lancing system in Korea, the $KALANS^(R)-I$ Lancing System, was completed in 2000 for Kori Unit 1 for cleaning the tubesheet of its Westinghouse Delta-60 steam generator. Thereafter, the success of the development and site implementation of the $KALANS^(R)-I$ lancing system for YGN Units 1&2 and Ulchin Units 3&4 was also realized in 2004 for sludge removal at those sites. The upper bundle cleaning system for Westinghouse model F steam generators is now under development.
In this study, a non-thermal plasma system was employed to simultaneously remove odorous compounds and organic sludge. The system consisted of two reactors; the first one was the non-thermal plasma reactor where ozone was produced by the plasma reaction and the ozone oxidized hydrogen sulfide, the model odorous compound, and then the ozone-laden gas stream was introduced to the second reactor where wasted sludge was disintegrated and solubilized by ozone oxidation. In this study, the gas retention time (GRT) and the hydraulic retention time (HRT) were changed in the two-reactor system, and the effects of GRT and HRT on reduction efficiencies of odor and sludge were determined. As the GRT increased, the ozone concentration increased resulting in an increasing efficiency of hydrogen sulfide removal. However, the overall ozone loading rate to the second sludge reactor was the same at any GRT, which resulted in an insignificant change in sludge reduction rate. When HRTs in the sludge reactor were 1, 2, 4 hours, the sludge reduction rates were approximately 30% during the four-hour operation, while the rate increased to 70% at the HRT of 6 hours. Nevertheless, at HRTs greater than 4 hours, the solubilization efficiency was not proportionally increased with increasing specific input energy, indicating that an appropriate sludge retention time needs to be applied to achieve effective solubilization efficiencies at a minimal power consumption for the non-thermal plasma reaction.
Using a developed mathematical model and calibrated kinetic constants, numerical experiments for a aerobic digestion of wastewater sludge by SBR aerobic digestion process combined with ultrasonication (USSBR) were performed in this study. It simulated well the phenomena of the decomposition of particulate organics and the release of organic nitrogen and transformation. To achieve 40 % of particulate organics removal, USSBR process requires only 6 days of SRT and 14 W/L of ultrasonic power whereas SBR aerobic digestion process requires 12 days of SRT. Based on the model simulation results, an empirical equation was presented here. This equation will be used to predict digestion efficiency for the given variables of SRT and ultrasonic power dose. USSBR aerobic digestion process can reduce the nitrogen concentration. The optimal operation strategy for the simultaneous removal of solids and soluble nitrogen in this process is estimated to 7 days of SRT with 14 W/L of ultrasonic power dose while anoxic period was 6 hours out of 24 hours of cycle time. In this condition, 40 % of particulate organics as well as 36 % of total nitrogen will be removed and the soluble nitrogen concentration of the centrate will be lower less then 40 mg/L.
38$^{\circ}C$에서 EDTA, NH$_4$OH.
Effluent recycling effect on UASB reactor performances is known as an important operational factor. In the present study, the possibility of intermittent recycle in UASB process for saving the power consumption was examined at different organic loading and various operational modes in recycle time period. The organic removal efficiencies of the reactors operated with the intermittent effluent recycle were considerably higher compared to those without the effluent recycle. In the intermittent recycle mode, the organic removal efficiencies slightly decreased as the non-recycle time period in the operational mode increased. Proper ratio of recycle and non-recycle time period in the mode seemed to be required to prevent the produced biogas from accumulation in the sludge bed, which caused dead zone in the reactor and sludge loss when the gas was escaped from the bed at the certain pressure.
