To satisfy good mechanical and optical properties of polymer-coated film products, it will be indispensable to elucidate the molecular orientation of polymer chains within coating liquids in coating flows. Using hybridized numerical method between computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and Brownian dynamics (BD) simulations can provide the useful information for the better quality control of coated films. Flexible polymer chains, e.g., ${\lambda}$-DNA molecules here, change their conformation according to the flow strength and the flow type. The molecular conformation within the coated film on the web or substrate is quite different, because the polymer chains experience the complicated flow strength and flow types in flow field. Especially in the slot coating flow, these chains are more extended by the extension-like flow field generated in the free surface curvature just beyond the downstream die region. Also, the polymer chain extension beneath the free surface can be affected by the die geometry, e.g., the coating gap, changing flow field.
The perovskite solar cell is a next-generation solar cell that replaces the existing silicon solar cell. It is a solar cell device using an organic-inorganic hybrid material having a perovskite structure as a photoactive layer. It has advantages for the process and has shown rapid efficiency improvement over the past decade. In the process of commercialization of such perovskite solar cells, research and development for a large-area coating method should be carried out. As one of the large-area perovskite solar cell large-area coating methods, the slot-die coating method was studied. By using a meniscus to pass over the substrate and coating the solution, the 3D printer was equipped with a meniscus so that it could be coated. Variables that act during coating include bed temperature, coating speed, N2 blowing interval, N2 blowing height, N2 blowing intensity, etc. By controlling these, the perovskite absorption layer was manufactured and the coating conditions for manufacturing large-area devices were optimized.

A roll-to-roll (R2R) continuous manufacturing system for a carbon-nanotube (CNT)-/silver-nanowire (AgNW)- based large-area transparent conductive film was introduced in this study. The systemic guidelines of the R2R slot-die coating process including roll eccentricity, wrap angle, pump accuracy, and blower influence were discussed. To simulate the coating phenomenon, we investigated the governing parameters of the coating process by incorporating the estimated relative thickness that was defined by combining the viscocapillary model and volume model. By using experimental and mathematical approaches, an excellent transparent conductive layer with a $40{\Omega}/{\Box}$ sheet resistance and 88 % transmittance was obtained; moreover, a dimensionless number identifies the correlation between the transparent conductive film and the anti-reflection film.
With an attempt to investigate the correlation between the internal pressure distribution of slit nozzle and the thickness uniformity of slot-coated thin films, we have performed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of slit nozzles and slot coating of high-viscosity (4,800 cPs) polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using a gantry slot-die coater. We have calculated the coefficient of variation (CV) to quantify the pressure and velocity distributions inside the slit nozzle and the thickness non-uniformity of slot-coated PDMS films. The pressure distribution inside the cavity and the velocity distribution at the outlet are analyzed by varying the shim thickness and flow rate. We have shown that the cavity pressure uniformity and film thickness uniformity are enhanced by reducing the shim thickness. It is addressed that the CV value of the cavity pressure that can ensure the thickness non-uniformity of less than 5% is equal to and less than 1%, which is achievable with the shim thickness of 150 ㎛. It is also found that as the flow rate increases, the average cavity pressure is increased with the CV value of the pressure unchanged and the maximum coating speed is increased. As the shim thickness is reduced, however, the maximum coating speed and flow rate decrease. The highly uniform PDMS films shows the tensile strain as high as 180%, which can be used as a stretchable substrate.

Computational fluid dynamic simulation based on the ABAQUS software was conducted to observe the inside flow of slot-die nozzle. The slot-die nozzle was modeled as 3-dimensional structure and three significant parameters were determined: inlet velocity of fluid, reservoir angles, number of strips none of which have been mentioned previously in the literature. The design of experiment, full factorial analysis was performed within determined design and process levels. The simulation result shows the inlet fluid velocity is most significant factor for the flows of inside nozzle. As an interaction effect, reservoir angle is closely related with number of strip that should address when the nozzle is designed. Moreover, the optimized values of each determined parameter were obtained as 35 mm/s of inlet velocity, 3 of strip numbers, and $22^{\circ}$ of reservoir angles. Based on these parameters, the outlet velocity was obtained as 0.53% of outlet uniformity which is improved from 8.67% of nominal results.
In the presence of $\mu-tip$ for narrow stripe coating, there appears lateral capillary flow along the hydrophilic head lip because the $\mu-tip$ has some resistance to flow. It was known to be suppressed by increasing the contact angle of the head lip. In this paper, we have demonstrated by computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulations that it can also be suppressed by the formation of micro-patterns on the shim and meniscus guide embedded into the slot-die head. To optimize the micro-patterned structure, we have performed simulations by varying the groove width, depth, and clearance. In the absence of micro-patterns, it is shown by experiment and simulation that the solution spreads to a distance of $1,300{\mu}m$ from the ${\mu}-tip$. In the presence of micro-patterns with the groove width and clearance of $50{\mu}m$, the distance the solution spreads is reduced to $260{\mu}m$. However, no further suppression in the capillary flow is observed with micro-patterns with the groove width of $40{\mu}m$ or less. It is also observed that the capillary flow is not affected by the groove depth if it is larger than $10{\mu}m$. We have shown that the distance the solution spreads can be reduced further to $204{\mu}m$ by coating a hydrophobic material (contact angle of $104^{\circ}$) on the surface of micro-patterns having the groove width and clearance of $50{\mu}m$.
As a process of plat panel display production, slot coating is widely used for the coating of photoresist on a wide glass substrate. A uniform coating thickness is important, and the coating uniformity is divided into nozzle and machine directions. The machine and nozzle directions coating uniformities are influenced by the operation condition of coater and flow uniformity inside the die, respectively. Non-uniform coating during steady coating process occurs according to those factors, however, non-uniform coating along the machine and nozzle directions has been observed at the beginning of coating by unsteady flow. In this study, steady and unsteady state flow simulations have been performed and compared with experiment to examine the causes of non-uniform coating. Computational results exhibited that it took a time to get a uniform pressure distribution at whole inside the die, and during this period of time edge regions showed lower exit velocity compared with center region. Subsequently edge regions had thinner coated layers than center region. However edge regions showed higher exit velocity than center region after steady state, and this made edge regions had thicker coated layer than center region.
With an attempt to suppress the moiré phenomenon caused by the interference between the black matrix of a display panel and the metal grid of a camera, we have fabricated an anti-moiré filter using light diffusing particles (LDPs) with the average diameter of 20 ㎛. It is demonstrated that the anti-moiré filter coated on a glass substrate (370 mm × 470 mm) using a table slot-die coater reduces the moiré intensity to a great extent when the area covered by LDPs is 50%. To quantify the intensity of moiré phenomenon, we have measured the lightness ratio and found that it is reduced from 132.12 down to 105.71 by the filter. To find the optimum area covered by LDPs, we have performed ray tracing simulations using Mie scatters as a substitute for LDPs. From the simulated irradiation distribution, we have calculated the standard deviation (SD) and contrast ratio (CR) to evaluate the moiré strength. As expected, the SD and CR values decrease with increasing covered area by LDPs. However, there exists a trade-off between the transmittance of the filter and its capability of reducing the moiré intensity in determining the area covered by LDPs.
We have investigated the feasibility of fabricating fine stripes using needle coating for potential applications in solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). To this end, we have employed an aqueous poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) solution that has been widely used as a hole injection layer (HIL) of OLEDs and performed needle coatings by varying the process parameters such as the coating gap and coating speed. As expected, the stripe width is reduced with increasing coating speed. However, the central thickness of the stripe is rather increased as the coating speed increases, which is different from other coating processes such as slot-die and blade coatings. It is due to the fact that the meniscus formed between the needle tip and the substrate varies depending sensitively on the coating speed. It is also found that the stripe width and thickness are reduced with increasing coating gap. To demonstrate its applicability to OLEDs, we have fabricated a red OLED stripe and obtained light emission with the width of about 90㎛.
