  • This study has attempted to facilitate various new technologies related to indoor containers and develop a desirable planting environment after investigating the growth (including root growth) of shade-tolerant landscape plants under slit processing, a natural indoor ventilation system. The following results were found: In terms of the shoot growth of Fatsia japonica in a slit container, no distinctive difference was observed in comparison with the control group. However, growth was good when the container 250mm tall or taller. Therefore, it was verified that optical soil depth is more important than slit processing in shoot growth of Fatsia japonica. In Fatsia japonica root length was observed as follows: Control 2(250mm) > Slit 2(250mm) > Control 1(195mm) > Slit 3(360mm) > Control 3(360mm) > Slit 1(195mm). The largest growth was observed in Control 2(250mm), which had no slit processing. In term of root width, this was lower than the initial value in all groups, which means that the root grew vertically, not horizontally. In terms of plant height of Ophiopogon japonicus, a gradual increase was observed in the control group that had no slit processing. No significant growth was detected in the slit system, however. In terms of shoot number, slit containers were generally higher than the control group. In terms of fresh and dry weights, on the contrary, slit containers were mostly lower than the control group. In Ophiopogon japonicus, root length was observed as follows: Slit 2(250mm) > Slit 1(195mm) > Control 2(250mm) > Control 3(360mm) > Slit 3(360mm) > Control 1(195mm). In Ardisia japonica, slit containers were mostly greater than control group in terms of plant height. The greatest plant height was observed at Slit 2(250mm) instead of Slit 1(195mm) and Slit 3(360mm). Except for plant height and shoot number, however, no significant shoot and root growth was observed. Root length was observed as follows: Slit 2(250mm) > Slit 3(360mm) > Control 3(360mm) > Slit 1(195mm) > Control 2(250mm) > Control 1(195mm). Therefore, root length in slit containers was mostly greater than in the control group. The width of root, however, declined in general.

  • We identified osteoclast-derived SLIT3 as a new coupling factor using fractionated secretomics. Coupling links bone resorption to bone formation. SLIT3 stimulated the recruitment and proliferation of osteoblasts into bone remodeling sites via activation of ${\beta}-catenin$. Autocrine signaling by SLIT3 also inhibited bone resorption by suppressing the fusion and differentiation of pre-osteoclasts. All mice lacking Slit3 or its receptor Robo1 showed an osteopenic phenotype with low bone formation and high bone resorption. A small truncated recombinant SLIT3 protein increased bone mass in an osteopenic mouse model. These results suggest that SLIT3 is a novel therapeutic target in metabolic bone diseases.

  • An experiment was conducted to know the effects of planting dates (March 5, 15, and 25 and April 4) and transparent polyethylene (P.E.) film treatments(tunnel, tunnel slit, and mulch) on air and soil temperatures and growth and yield of a sweet corn variety, Great Bell. Maximum air and soil temperatures and minimum air and soil temperatures were greater at tunnel>tunnel slit>mulch in that order. Differences in maximum air and soil temperatures among the P.E. film treatments were much greater than those in minimum air and soil temperatures. However, when film was opened due to high air temperature over 40$^{\circ}C$ in the tunnel, air temperature was similar but soil temperature was lower com-pared to mulch. High temperature stress could be avoided in tunnel slit without opening film by increase in the number of slits. Cold damage of corn seedlings was avoided by tunnel and reduced by tunnel slit, and frost-damaged seedlings under the mulch were recovered in few days. The number of days from planting to silking was reduced as planting date delayed. At early plantings, tunnel enhanced early growth and silking, but it delayed at late plantings because tunnel was opened during the most of day time due to high temperature. Black streaked dwarf virus(BSDV) disease was more severe at early plantings and it was reduced in tunnel slit at late plantings because plants were grown under the film at the time of infection. The number of marketable ears was similar among all treatments except mulch at March 5 planting where BSDV was severely infected. Gross income was high in tunnel and tunnel slit at March 25 planting which had more larger marketbale ears and tunnel and tunnel slit at March 5 planting which had higher market price.

  • In this paper, the problem of electromagnetic transmission via slits in a cavity inside a conducting screen of finite thickness has been considered in the case that the transverse electric(to the slit axis) polarized plane wave is incident on a slit. The problem is solved numerically by the method of moments and the results are compared with those obtained from an equivalent circuit suitable for a case in which the slit width is infinite and the structure is modified to the two partially overlapped conducting planes. It is observed that when the cavity is resonated, the effective slit width reaches its maximum value of $1/\pi$ wavelengths, irrespective of the actual slit width and the incidence angle. When the thickness of the conducting plane is much smaller than the wavelength, the numerical results for the effective slit width(or transmission width) agree well with those obtained from the equivalent circuit, even though the slit is as narrow as the thickness of the conducting plane.

  • Corona discharge and ozone generation characteristics of a slit dielectric barrier discharge type wire-plate plasma reactor with a third electrode have been investigated. When a third electrode is installed on a slit of the slit barrier, where an intense corona discharge occurs, it is found that a significantly increased ozone output could be obtained. This, however, indicates that the third electrode can activate the corona discharges both of the discharge wire and the slit of the slit barrier in the plasma reactor. As a result, a thin stainless wire, used as the third electrode has a strong effect to influence the corona discharge of the slit and corona wire, especially to the negative corona discharge. Higher amounts of the output ozone and ozone yield, about 1.27 and 1.29 times for the negative corona discharge, can be obtained with the third electrode, which reveals the effectiveness of the third electrode.

  • This study examines the reflection of a partially perforated wall with single chamber by 2D and 3D hydraulic experiments. The effects of slit shape on the front wall, relative chamber width and wave steepness were discussed. For the normal incident wave condition, the reflections of horizontal slit case were lower than that of the vertical slit with the similar porosity, but the differences are not significant. When the wave steepness is relatively small, the reflection coefficients are large. In the oblique incidence, the normalized wave heights along a perforated wall with similar porosity are almost same for the vertical and horizontal slit walls and therefore the difference by slit shape can be ignored.

  • The rigid steel connections were suffered severe damage because of low rotational capacity during earthquakes. Hence, many investigations have been conducted on the connections of steel structures. As a solution, steel slit dampers were employed at the connections to prevent brittle failure of connections and damage of main structural members. Slit damper is a plate or a standard section with a number of slits in the web. The objective of this paper is to improve the seismic performance of steel slit dampers in the beam-to-column connection using finite element modeling. With reviewing the previous investigations, it is observed that slit dampers were commonly fractured in the end parts of the struts. This may be due to the low participation of struts middle parts in the energy dissipation. Thus, in the present study slit damper with elliptic slits is proposed in such a way that end parts of struts have more energy absorption area than struts middle parts. A parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of geometric parameters of elliptic slit damper such as strut width, strut height and plate thickness on the seismic performance of the beam-to-column connection. The stress distribution is improved along the struts in the proposed slit damper with elliptic slits and the stress concentration is decreased in the end parts of struts. The average contributions of elliptic slit dampers, beam and other sections to the energy dissipation are about 97.19%, 2.12% and 0.69%, respectively.

  • This paper presents the 3-D profile measurement system of live human faces, which was developed specially for 'KUMDORI sculptor robot' of the '93 Taejon Exposition. '93 Taejon EXPO. The basic principle for measurement adopts the slit beam projection which is a method of measuring 3-D surface profiles using geometric optics between the slit beam and the CCD camera. Since the slit beam projection consumes long measuring time, it is unfit to measure the 3-D profiles of living objects as human. Therefore, the projection type slit beam method which consumes short measuring time is newly suggested. And an algorithm to reconstruct the 3-D profile from the deformed images using finite approximated calibration is suggested and practically implemented. The projection type slit beam method was applied to spectators in a period of '93 Taejon EXPO. The measurement results show that the technique is suitable for 3-D face profile measurement on a living body.

  • An optical method of slit beam scanning topography is presented for the 3-dimensional profile measurement of free-formed surfaces. A slit beam of laser is projected in a scanning mode and its illuminated trajectory on the object is captured by using a CCD camera. The 3-dimensional coordinates of the trajectory is then computed by using the given geometry between the slit beam and the camera, so that the whole surface profile of the object can be obtained in a successive manner. Detailed optical principles are described with special emphasis to lateral are discussed to demonstrate the measuring performances of the slit beam scanning topography proposed in this study.

  • Three kinds of tight skirts, slim type, straight type, and semi-tight type were investigated to obtain necessary information about the size of the back slit. Fourteen college students put on these experimental clothes and walked on the flat floor, going up and down the stairs. The dimensions of the back slit were measured by width and length. The stride length was taken from the record of footprints of walking. The correlation between the body measurement, stride length and the size of the back slit was studied. As a result of this experiment, the findings are as follows: 1. The size of the back slits differed from each skirt type at the level of p<0.001. In the case of walking on the floor, the average dimension of the back slit was 14.0 cm long 5.0 cm wide for the slim type,9.5 cm long 2.8 cm wide for the straight type and 2.1 cm long 0.5 cm wide for the semi-tight type. 2. In the case of walking on the stairways, the average dimension of the back slit was 16.0 cm long 5.8 cm wide for the slim type, 12.4 cm long 3.9 cm wide for the straight type and 3.1 cm long 1.1 cm wide for the semi-tight type. 3. The correlation between the height (stature, waist height, knee height) and the size of back slit was 0.3 to 0.6. The correlation between the girth (waist, hip) and the size of back slit was 0.3 to -0.5. 4. The correlation between the stride length and the size of back slit was 0.76 for the slim skirt, 0.56 for the straight skirt, 0.28 for the semitight skirt.
