The Ulsan Fault Zone (UFZ) of NNW trend is developed in the Gyeongsang Basin, the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula, and the Quaternary faults have been found around the UFZ. The faults generally thrust the Bulguksa igneous rocks of Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary upon the Quaternary deposits or are developed within the Quaternary deposits. They mainly show the reverse-slip sense of top-to-the west movement. The lines connecting the their outcrop sites show a zigzag-form which is similar to the orientation of their fault surfaces which show the various trends, like (W)NW, N-S, (E)NE, ENE trends. The E-W trending dextral strike(-slip) fault is found in the Quaternary deposits of the Singye-ri valley. It cuts the N-S trending reverse fault and are cut by the N-S trending thrust fault again. Two types of at least two times of Quaternary tectonic movements related to the formation of neotectonic fault zone in the Singye-ri valley are considered from such the geometric and kinematic characteristics of Quaternary faults. One is the reverse faulting of N-S trend by the E-W directed 1st compression and associated the strike-slip tear faulting of E-W trend, and then the thrust faulting of N-S trend by the E-W directed 2nd compression. The other is the reverse faulting of N-S trend, and then the dextral strike-slip faulting of E-W trend by the NW-SE directed compression, and then the thrust faulting of N-S trend. In this paper is suggested the development history of Singye-ri neotectonic fault zone on the basis of the various orientations of Quaternary fault surfaces around the UFZ, and the zigzag-form connecting line of their outcrop sites, and the compressive arc-shaped lineaments which convex to the west reported recently in the Yangsan Fault Zone.
An ultramafic complex occurs as an isolated lenticular body in the Andong area. The Andong ultramafic complex comprises ultramafic and mafic rocks, but mainly peridotites. The complex extends for several kilometer to ENE direction, adjacent to the Andong fault line. This study is for petrochemistry of the peridotites within the ultramafic complex and characteristics of asbestos occurrences. The peridotites are igneous origin, ranging from lherzolite to wehrlites and are characterized by high Fo olivine ($Fo_{0.85-0.87}$), Mg clinopyroxene ($Mg_{87.5-93.5}$), and tremolitic to tschermakitic hornblende. Geochemically, these rocks show high magnesium number (mainly Mg = 85.3-87.38) and transitional element and low alkali element contents. The peridotites host asbestos, including chrysotile, tremolite and actinolite asbestos, but dominated by amphibole asbestos. The amphibole asbestos are found along small fault face, and cleavage and fracture showing several cm to ten cm in width as slip and oblique fibers, while the chryostiles occur at cleavage and vein showing several mm-cm in width as cross and slip fibers. They are confirmed by PLM, XRD and SEM results. Overall characteristics of peridotites from the Andong ultramafic complex and occurrences of the asbestos are similar to those of worldwide orogenic related Alpine type ultramafic rocks and serpentinized ultramafic bodies in Chungnam, Korea, respectively.

The objective of this study is to examine the removal rate of air pollutants, specifically sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides(NOx), using concrete permeable blocks containing zeolite beads coated with materials capable of eliminating these pollutants. Titanium dioxide(TiO2) powder and coconut shell powder were utilized for the removal of SOx and NOx and were applied as coatings on the zeolite beads. Concrete permeable block specimens embedded with the coated zeolite beads were produced using an actual factory production line. Test results demonstrated that the concrete permeable block containing zeolite beads coated with coconut shell powder in the surface layer achieved SOx and NOx removal rates of 12.5% and 99%, respectively, exhibiting superior performance compared to other blocks. Additionally, the flexural strength and slip resistance were 5.3MPa and 65BPN or higher, respectively, satisfying the requirements specified in KS F 4419 and KS F 4561. Conversely, the permeability coefficient exhibited low permeability, with grades 2 and 3 before and after contaminant pollution, according to the standard for 'design, construction, and maintenance of pavement using permeable block'. In conclusion, incorporating zeolite beads coated with coconut shell powder in the surface layer enables simultaneous removal of SOx and NOx, irrespective of ultraviolet rays, while maintaining adequate flexural strength and slip resistance. However, the permeability is significantly reduced, necessitating further improvements.

Petrological, paleomagnetic, geomorphological and structural studies on the southern part of, so called, Chugaryeong rift valley, have been carried out in order to clarify the nature of the rift valley. Three stages of volcanic activities characterized by Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks and tholeiitic and andesitic basalt of Cretaceous age(?), and Jongok Quaternary olivine basalt occurred along the Dongducheon fault line. Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks distributed in the central part of the studied area consist of rhyodacite, acidic tuff and tuff breccia, which are bounded by Dongsong fault on the east and Daegwangri fault on the west. The Jongok basalt differs from those of Ulrung and Jeju islands in mineralogy, chemical composition and differentiation. Jongok basalt distributed along the Hantan river dilineates the vesicles curved toward downstream direction and increment of numbers and thickness of lava flow toward upstream direction. These facts suggest that lava flowed from upstream side of the river. Rectangular drainage patterns also support the presence of the Dongducheon, Pocheon, Wangsukcheon and Kyonggang faults which were previously known. LANDSAT image, however, does not show any lineaments which could be counted as a graben or rift valley. Displacement of Precambrian quartzite and Jurassic Daedong supergroup along the southwestern extension of the Dongducheon fault shows the right lateral movement. The Paleomagnetic study of the tholeiitic and andesitic basalts from Baegeuri, Jangtanri and Tonghyeonri located at 2. 3km east, 0km east, and 1.5km west of Dongducheon fault respectively shows that their VGP(Virtual Geomagnetic Pole) being to intermediate geomagnetic field of short duration which suggests that they formed in almost same period. Mean VGP of Jongok basalt is located 82.4N and 80.6E. This is in good coincidence with worldwide VGP of Plio-Pleistocene indicating that Jongok basalt was extruded during Plio-Pleistocene epoch, and suggesting that the studied area has been tectonically stable since then. From the present study, the tectonic episode of the region is concluded as following three stages. 1. The 1st period is worked by the Daebo orogeny of Jurassic during which granodiorite was intruded in Precambrian basement. 2. The 2nd period is the time when right lateral strike-slip fault of NNE-SSW direction was formed probably during late Cretaceous to Paleogene and the Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks and the older basalts were extruded. 3. The 3rd period is the time when the fault was rejuvenated during Pliocene or Pleistocene accompanied by the eruption of Jongok basalt. As a conclusion, geologic structure of the studied area is rather fault line valley than graben or rift valley, which is formed by differential erosion along the Dongducheon fault suggesting a continuation of the Sikhote-Alin fault. The volcanic rocks including the Jijangbong acidic rocks, tholeiitic-andesitic basalt and olivine basalt are associated with this fault line.
The Cenozoic geological structures and the tectonic evolution of the southern Ulleung Basin were studied with seismic profiles and exploration well data. Basement structure of the Korea Strait is distinctly characterized by normal faults trending northeast to southwest. The normal faults of the basement are most likely related to the initial liking and extensional tectonics of Ulleung Basin. Tsushima fault along the west coast of Tsushima islands runs northeastward to the central Ulleung Basin. The Middle Miocene and older sequences in the Tsushima Strait show folds and faults mostly trending northeast to southwest. These folds and faults may be interpreted as a result of compressional tectonics. The Late Miocene to Qauternary sequences are not much deformed, but numerous faults mostly N-S trending are dominated in the Tsushima Strait. The Ulleung Basin was in intial rifting during Oligocene, and then active extension and subsidence from Early to early Middle Miocene. Therefore SW Japan separated from Korea Peninsula and drifted toward southeast, and Ulleung Basin was formed as a pull-apart basin under dextral transtensional tectonic regime. During rifting and extensional stage, Tsushima fault as a main tectonic line separating SW Japan block from the Korean Peninsula acted as a normal faulting with right-lateral strike-slip motion as SW Japan drifted southeastward. During middle Middle Miocene to early Late Miocene, the opening of Ulleung basin stopped and uplifted due to compressional tectonics. The southwest Japan block converging on the Korean Peninsula caused compressional stress to the southern margin of Ulleung Basin, resulting in strong deformation under sinistral transpressional tectonic regime. Tsushima fault acted as thrust fault with left-lateral strike-slip motion. From middle Late Miocene to Quaternary, the southern margin of Ulleung Basin has been controlled by compressional motion. Thus the Tsushima fault still appears to be an active thrust fault by compressional tectonic regime.

Microforming processes have recently attracted considerable attention from industry and academia since they enable the production of microscale parts using various materials at a high production rate, minimize material loss, and provide parts with excellent mechanical properties. However, for successful development and applications of the microforming process it is critical to take the tribological size effect into consideration because previous studies have shown that traditional friction models for macroscale forming generate significantly erroneous results in the case of microforming. In this paper, we performed scaled ring compression experiments to investigate the tribological size effect of aluminum and brass materials in microforming. The sensitivity of the interfacial friction to the deformation characteristics of the ring was quantitatively analyzed by the finite element analysis. In addition, a friction model based on slip line field and upper boundary techniques was used to theoretically explain the friction mechanism in microforming.

In this paper, the power conditioner composed of the stand-alone single-phase squirrel cage rotor type self-excited induction generator (SEIG) driven by prime movers such as a wind turbine and a micro gas turbine (MGT) is presented by using the steady-state circuit analysis based on the two nodal admittance approaches using the per-unit frequency in addition to a new state variable defined by the per-unit slip frequency along with its performance evaluations for the stand-alone energy utilizations. The stande-alone single-phase SEIG operating performances in unregulated voltage control loop are then evaluated on line under the conditions of the speed change transients of the prime mover and the stand-alone electrical passive load power variations with the simple theoretical analysis and the efficient computation processing procedures described in the part I of this paper. In addition, a feasuible PI controlled feedback closed-loop voltage regulation scheme of the stande-alone single-phase SEIG is designed on the basis of the static VAR compensate. (SVC) and discussed in experiment for the promising stand-alone power conditioner. The experimental operating performance results are illustrated and give good agreements with the simulation ones. The simulation and experimental results of the stand-alone single-phase SEIG with the simple SVC controller for its stabilized voltage regulation prove the practical effectiveness of the additional SVC control loop scheme including the PI controller with fast response characteristics and steady-sate performance improvements.

As environmental pollution, global warming, and exhaustion of fossil fuel become global issue recently, there has been strong research motivation to develop green energy technology. Along the same line of motivation, some research efforts have been put into the development of environment-friendly bicycle equipped with various smart energy technologies to increase the usability of the bicycle as short-distance transportation. Among the technologies related with new generation bicycle, PAS (power assist system) is one of the most important systems that are essential in efficiently integrating human power and the electrical power supplied by electric motor driven by battery. In this paper, a novel torque sensor technology which is core component for PAS is proposed. Unlike existing technologies, strain gauges are attached to rear shaft directly under the hub bearings, which eliminates the requirement of slip-ring, Furthermore, the sensor is able to not only measure the torque transmitted to driving axle by human but also estimate the position of the gear to which the chain is currently engaged.
Wenchuan earthquake (Mw 7.9) occurred in Sichuan province, China, May 2008 had resulted in a huge fault displacement around the Lungmenshan fault. Preliminary results of the fault displacement observed by ALOS PALSAR interferometry are presented. The surface deformation by the Wenchuan earthquake was reported up to 10m consisting of thrust- and right-slip compnents. A significant reduction in ionospheric density was also reported. Twenty differential interferograms and twenty multiple aperture SAR interferometry (MAI) pairs were produced over four ALOS tracks. It was observed from differential interferograms that i) LOS deformation decreases steadily from northnorthwest of the Longmenshan fault to the fault, ii) the LOS deformation sharply increases at areas around the fault, and iii) the decrease of the LOS deformation is observed from the Longmenshan fault to the south-southeast of the fault. Horizontal movement of the reverse fault displacement can better be observed by MAI technique, and the MAI phases show that i) the south-southeast directional reverse fault displacement (negative along-track deformation for an ascending track) of the north-northwest block gradually increases to the Longmenshan fault, ii) the reverse fault movement of the south-southeast block is sharply reversed to the north-northwest of the fault, and iii) the northnorthwest movement gradually decreases to the south-southeast of fault. Although the Lonmenshan Fault line is a center of earthquake epicenter, the boundary of surface movement exists to the north-northeast of the fault. Since the ionosphere was not stable even forty days after the mainshock, MAI phases were seriously corrupted by ionospheric effect. It is necessary to acquire more data when the ionosphere recovered to a normal state.

During oxidation process, several type of defects are formed on the surface of the silicon crystal which was damaged mechanically before oxidation. As the size of abrasive particle increases multiple dislocation loops are produced favorably over oxidation-induced stacking faults, which are dominantly produced when ground with finer abrasive particle. These defects are not related with the crystal growth process like Czochralski or directional solidification. During directional solidification process, twins and stacking faults are the two major defects observed in the bulk of the silicon crystal. On the other hand, slip dislocations produced by the thermal stress are not observed. Thus, not only in single crystalline silicon crystal but also in multi-crystalline silicon, extrinsic gettering process with programmed production of surface defects might be highly applicable to silicon wafers for purification.
