This paper presents a new anti-lock brake system(ABS) using electro-rheological(ER) valve actuators for the wheel slip control. The hydraulic dynamic model of the automotive brake system is formulated by incorporating electric field-dependent Bingham properties of ER fluid obtained experimentally. The brake system designed by this hydraulic model is able to control wheel slip by controlling the intensity of electric field which tunes the braking torque. The control fields of the ER valve to command desired wheel slip are determined by a sliding mode controller. A comparison between the proposed brake system and the conventional brake system is made by providing with computer simulations of vehicle motions under ABS performance requirement condition.
The general control method for Anti-lock Brake System(ABS) is that the wheel slip ratio is observed and the braking force is controlled in real time in order to keep the wheel slip ratio under the value of the best slip ratio. When a wheel runs on the state of the best slip ratio, the ground friction of the wheel approaches the highest value. The value of best slip ratio, theoretically, is known as the value between 10 and 20 % and it is dependant on the ground condition such as dry, wet and ice. It is an important parameter for the braking performance and affects the braking stability and efficiency. In this thesis, an experimental method is suggested, which is a reliable way to decide the best slip ratio through dynamo tests simulating aircraft taxiing conditions. The obtained best slip ratio is proved its validity by results of aircraft taxiing tests.
The wheel slip control systems are able to control the braking force more accurately and can be adapted to different vehicles more easily than conventional braking control systems. In order to achieve the superior braking performance through the wheel slip control, real-time information such as the tire braking force at each wheel is required. In addition, the optimal target slip values need to be determined depending on the braking objectives such as minimum braking distance, stability enhancement, etc. In this paper, a wheel slip control system is developed for maintaining the vehicle stability based on the braking monitor, wheel slip controller and optimal target slip assignment algorithm. The braking monitor estimates the tire braking force, lateral tire force and brake disk-pad friction coefficient utilizing the extended Kalman filter. The wheel slip controller is designed based on the sliding mode control method. The target slip assignment algorithm is proposed to maintain the vehicle stability based on the direct yaw moment controller and fuzzy logic. The performance of the proposed wheel slip control system is verified in simulations and demonstrates the effectiveness of the wheel slip control in various road conditions.
In many dynamic systems, there are unwanted oscillation which may arise the reduction of performance. Especially in low sliding speed condition, the stick-slip is an important issue because it because unstable motion as well as inaccurate position control in the system. Most previous works on the stick-slip are, however, only concerned with simple modeling under the condition of constant normal force. The normal force and the amount of hydraulic oil are variable with a cylinder stroke in the telescopic boom. This paper presents the pressure variations during stick-slip with the cylinder of telescope boom. Pressure variations by stick-slip has a similar pattern to that of single mass-spring model. The stick-slip is gradually decreased by means of increased flow rate.
Stick-slip of belt-pulley system produces vibration which results in the noise problem. Experimental study was carried out to investigate the phenomenon of stick-slip with simple v-belt system. The optical displacement sensor detected the vibration caused by the stick-slip of which the frequency was significantly dependant on tension of the belt. The rotation speed of putties also affected the frequency and magnitude of the stick-slip vibration. Existence of misalignment between the driven and drive pulleys made some difference in the stick-slip frequency, but not much. Further study is necessary to identify the generation of noise from the stick-slip vibration.
This paper proposes a new anti-slip re-adhesion control system fur electric railway vehicle driven by inverter-fed induction motors. This paper introduces an instantaneous tangential farce coefficient estimator between driving wheel and rail, which is based on disturbance observer. The torque command of proposed system regulates to exceed this estimated tangential farce coefficient in order to avoid undesirable slip phenomenon of driving wheels. We have already proposed the anti-slip re-adhesion control system based on disturbance observer for simplified one wheel equivalent model successfully. This paper extend to this system to the actual bogie system, which has four driving wheels driven by two induction motors fed by one inverter. In order to apply anti-slip re-adhesion control to the actual bogie system a new anti-slip re-adhesion control based on both disturbance observer and speed sensor-less vector control of induction motor with quick response are combined. The experimental results and the numerical simulation results prove the validity of the proposed control system.

In many dynamic systems, unwanted vibrations which may arise during operation of machines are costly in terms of reduction of performance and service life. Sometimes these risky oscillations endanger equipment and personnel. When hydraulic telescopic booms taken large mass are driven at slow speeds between the two pads, unstable oscillations occur through the stick-slip at the sliding parts and become more severe and saw-toothed. This paper supposes few models for the telescopic boom in the multi-degree of freedom system, and attempts a theoretical approach for the numerical analysis in its stick-slip condition, It was verified that this theoretical approach has an effect on estimate of stick-slip in the one-degree as well as multi-degree of freedom system.
When low sliding velocities in the boundary lubrication range are operating, irregular movements frequently occur which are a result of the stick-slip phenomenon. Such slide motions are undesirable in precision machine tools, particularly with feed back systems used in numerical and adaptive control machine tools. Accordingly, this paper reports analytical and experimental studies in the stick-slip characteristic of machine tool feeding system. The main conclusions of this study are as follows; The tendency towards stick-slip effects may be reduced by; 1). Reducing the drop in friction coefficient in the Stribeck curve(on the rising part of the friction characteristic at higher sliding speeds, the system is stable all the time) 2). Reducing the transition velocity by the use of a higher viscosity lubricating oil. 3). Increasing the stiffness(Damping)and reducing normal load(Sliding mass) Therefore, the Critical velocity is decided from the above conclusions and in designing of machine tool, feed rates(sliding velocity)must be design the more than critical velocity.
