  • Despite numerous researches on atomic-scale friction have been carried out for understanding the origin of friction, lots of questions about sliding friction still remain. It is known that friction at atomic-scale always shows unique phenomena called 'stick-slips' which reflect atomic lattice of a scanned surface. In this work, experimental study on the effects of system stiffnesses and load on the atomic-scale stick-slip friction of graphite was performed by using an Atomic Force Microscope and various cantilevers/tips. The objective of this research is to figure out the dependency of atomic-scale friction on the nanomechanical properties in sliding contact such as load, stiffness and contact materials systematically. From this work, the experimental observation of transitions in atomic-scale friction from smooth sliding to multiple stick-slips in air was first made, according to the lateral cantilever stiffness and applied normal load. The superlubricity of graphite could be verified from friction vs. load experiments. Based on the results, the relationship between the stickslip behaviors and contact stiffness was carefully discussed in this work. The results or this work indicate that the atomic-scale stick-slip behaviors can be controlled by adjusting the system stiffnesses and contact materials.

  • In electric motor coaches, the rolling stocks move by the adhesive effort between rail and driving wheel. Generally, the adhesive effort is defined by the function of both the weight of electric motor coach and the adhesive effort between rails and driving wheel. The characteristics of adhesive effort is strongly affected by the conditions between rails and driving wheel. When the adhesive effort decreases suddenly, the electric motor coach has slip phenomena. This paper proposes a re-adhesion control algorithm which uses the maximum adhesive effort by instantaneous estimation of adhesion force using load torque disturbance observer. Based on this estimated adhesive effort, the re-adhesion control is performed to obtain the maximum transfer of the tractive effort.

  • Because most fatigue cracks in wheel and rail take place by rolling contact of wheel and rail in railroad industry, it is critical to understand the rolling contact phenomena, especially for the three-dimensional situation. This paper presents an approach to steady-state rolling contact problem of three-dimensional contact bodies, with or without tangential force, based on the finite element method. The steady-state conditions are controlled by the applied relative slip and tangential force. The three-dimensional distribution of tangential traction and contact stresses on the contact surface are investigated. Results show that the distribution of tangential traction and contact stresses on the contact surface varies rapidly as a result of the variation of stick-slip region. The tangential traction is very close in form to Carter's distribution.

  • A mathematical model for cold rolling and temper rolling process of thin steel strip has been developed using the influence function method. By solving the equations describing roll gap phenomena in a unique procedure and considering more influence factors, the model offers significant improvements in accuracy, robustness and generality of the solution for the thin strip cold and temper rolling conditions. The relationship between the shape of the roll profile and the roll force is also discussed. Calculation results show that any change increasing the roll force may result in or enlarge the central flat region in the deformation zone. Applied to the temper rolling process, the model can well predict not only the rolling load but also the large forward slip. Therefore, the measured forward slip, together with the measured roll force, was used to calibrate the model. The model was installed in tile setup computer of a temper rolling mill to make parallel setup calculations. The calculation results show good agreement with the measured data and the validity and precision of the model are proven.

  • Micro forming is a suited technology to manufacture very small metallic parts(several $mm{\sim}{\mu}m$). In this study, the micro forming property was studied, using Al5083 superplastic alloy with micro grain, suitable for the micro forming process and Zr-BMG amorphous with pseudo-superplastic phenomena in the supercooled liquid state. Micro forming experiments under stastic load status showed that distortion by slip and spin of the grain system and slip inside the grain was observed in the Al5083 superplastic alloy. In case of Zr-BMG, because there is no grain, the distribution of the forming property was similar to the load distribution between punch and metal.

  • Air Conditioner has become a popular comfort providing device since two decades, whether in an office or home especially for warm and wet climate countries. The RAC (Room Air Conditioner) is widely used in various working spaces and residences. It composed of heat exchager, cross-flow fan, stabilizer, rearguider and blade of diffuser region, etc. In this study, numerical analyses based on the prediction of transient phenomena were carried out to investigate the flow characteristics in the RAC, including the impeller, the rearguider, the stabilizer and the blade of the diffuser region. Using a commercial code, FLUENT, the velocity, pressure and streamlines were obtained with unsteady, turbulent flow and no-slip condition. The angular velocities of impeller are located in the 900 rpm. Turbulent closure was achieved using a standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model. A moving reference frame (MRF) approach was adopted to simulate the flow field generated by impeller in the RAC. Results were graphically depicted with various geometrical configurations and operating conditions.

  • An adaptive neural network compensator for stick-slip friction phenomena in servo systems is proposed to supplement the traditionally available position and velocity control loops for precise motion control. The neural network compensator plays a role of canceling the effect of nonlinear slipping friction force. This enables the mechatronic systems more precise control and realistic design in the digital computer. It was confirmed that the control accuracy is more improved near zero velocity and the points of changing the moving direction through numerical simulation

  • In electric motor coaches, when the adhesion force coefficient between rail and driving wheel decreases suddenly, the electric motor coach has slip phenomena. The characteristics of adhesion force coefficient is strongly affected by the conditions between rails and driving wheels, such as moisture, dust, and oil on the rails and so on. This paper proposes the vector control structure for the improved re-adhesion control with paralleled control of induction motors under the sudden variation of the adhesion force coefficient.
