Friction and wear behavior of a carbon/carbon composite material for aircraft brake material was experimentally investigated. Friction and wear test setup was designed and built for the experiment. Friction and wear tests were conducted under various sliding conditions. Friction coefficients were measured and processed by a data acquisition system and amount of wear measured by a balance. Stainless steel disk was used as the counterface material. Temperature was also measured by inserting thermocouple 2.5 mm beneath the sliding surface of the carbon/carbon composite specimen. Wear surfaces were observed by SEM, and analyzed by EDAX. The experimental results showed that sliding speed and normal force did not have significant effects on friction coefficient and wear factor of the composite. Temperature increase just below the surface was not large enough to cause any thermal degradation or oxidation which occurred at higher temperature when tested by TGA. Wear film was generated both on the specimen and on the counterface at relatively low sliding speed but cracks, grooves, and wear debris were observed at high sliding speed. Friction coefficient remained almost constant when the sliding speed or normal load was varied. It is believed that the adhesive and abrasive components contributed mainly to the friction coefficient. Wear behavior at low sliding speed was governed by wear film formation and adhesive wear mechanism. At high speed, fiber orientation, ploughing by counterface asperities, and fiber breakage dominated wear of the carbon/carbon composite.

SRM(Switched Reluctance Motor) drives require the accurate position information of the rotor. These informations are generally provided by a tacho generator or digital shaft-position encoder These speed sensors lower the system reliability and require special attention to noise. This paper describes a new approach to estimating SRM speed from measured terminal voltages and currents for speed sensorless control. The described method is based on the sliding mode observer. The rotor speed and position observers are estimated by the adaptation law using the real and estimated currents. However, the conventional adaptive sliding mode observer based on the variable structure control theory has some disadvantages that the estimated values including the high-frequency chattering and the steady state error generated due to the infinite feedback gain chosen and the discontinuous control input. To reduce the chattering and steady state error, an integrator is also inserted in the sliding mode observer strategy. The described adaptive sliding mode observer decreases the vibration to the switching hyper-plane of the sliding mode by adding integrator. The described methodology incorporates the Lyapunov algorithm to drive the rotor speed and the stator resistance such that it can overcome the problem of sensitivity in the face of SRM parameter variation. Also, without any mechanical information. The rotor speed of SRM is obtained form adaptive scheme. The described method is verified through the simulation and experiment.
Al/SiC composites were fabricated by thermal spray process, and the dry sliding wear tests were performed using the various sliding speed of 10, 30, 60 and 90 RPM through 1000 cycles. The applied load was 10 N and radius of wear track was 15 mm. Wear tracks on the Al/SiC composites were investigated using scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). In the case of sliding speed of 10 RPM, adhesive wear behavior caused by plastic deformation of composits surface was observed. In the cases of sliding speed of 30, 60, 90 RPM, abrasive wear behavior on the adhered layer formed by debris were observed. Through this study, it was found that the wear behavior of Al/SiC composites was mainly influenced by the sliding speed.
This study was undertaken to investigate the dry wear characteristics and mechanism of KP-4M steel for plastic molding against SKD 61 hardened by heat treatment. The wear test was carried out under different conditions such as sliding speed, contact pressure, sliding distance, with frictional tester of pin on disc type. The wear loss on variation of sliding speed was little in lower speed range below 0.5 m/sec and in higher speed range above 1.5 m/sec,'but wear loss was high in intermediate speed range. The critical sliding speed, which showed the maximum value of specific wear rate, became lower with increased contact pressure. Increasing the contact pressure, the critical sliding distance Lcr which the wear mechanism changes from severe wear to mild wear was increased due to the decrease of oxidation reaction velocity. Through this study we suggested a model of generation and elimination process of wear debris of KP-4M steel for plastic molding.

The speed and position information of the rotor are required in the speed control of SRM(Switched Reluctance Motors). This information is generally provided by shaft encoder or resolver. It is weak in the dusty, high temperature, and EMI environment. Consequntly, much attention has been given to SRM control for eliminationating the position and speed sensors. In this paper, a new estimation algorithm for the rotor position and speed for SRM drives is described. The algorithm is implemented by the sliding mode observer. The stability and robustness of the sliding observer for the parameter variations of the SRM are proved by variable structure control theory. Speed control of the SRM is accomplished by the estimated speed and position. Experiment results verify that the mode observer is able to estimate the speed and position well.

In this paper, an integrated nonlinear sliding mode observer and controller has been designed in order to control of an automotive engine idle speed. The primary objective of the engine idle speed control is to maintain the desired engine idle speed despite of various torque disturbances via estimating air mass flow at the location of the injector in intake manifold by using a sliding mode observer. Simulation results show that the case where both throttle angle and ignition time are used as control inputs outperforms the case where just only throttle angle is used as a control input.

The tribological role of mass transfer layer was studied with silver coatings under various ranges of load and sliding speed. Silver coating was performed with a functionally gradient coating method. Tests were performed in dry sliding conditions, using a ball-on-disk contact configuration, at the load of 0.0196-17.64 N and the sliding speed of 20-1,000 mm/s in ambient air. Optical microscope and EPMA analyses showed that contact surfaces were covered with the mass transfer layers of agglomerated wear particles depending upon the contact conditions, and they greatly influenced the tribological characteristics of the surfaces. However, the formation of mass transfer layer was suppressed as the sliding speed increased, and above a critical sliding speed, no mass transfer layer was able to form. For building up a general framework of tribological behavior of the coated silver films, all test data were summarized on a map whose axes are contact pressure and sliding speed.
In this study, friction-wear test was carried out on the carburized layer depth of a mechanical structure steel SNCM carburized with RX and LPG for 7hrs at $930^{\circ}C$ and also the wear properties of wear loss, wear rate, coefficient of friction, friction force and friction temperature were investigated. The wear properties for carburized layer of SNCM were tested on dry condition at the room temperature by the thrust load of 49~245N range at sliding speed of 0.2m/sec and the sliding speed of 0.2~1.0m/sec range at thrust load of 98N. Wear loss on the depth of carburizing layer was increased with increasing of thrust load and sliding speed, and with decreasing of hardness. The condition of worn surfaces were showed mild wear at less than the thrust load of 98N and sliding speed of 0.6m/sec but were showed severe wear at more than 98N and 0.6m/sec. The friction load and temperature were increased with increasing of thrust load but with increasing sliding speed was appeared minimum at 0.6m/sec. With increasing thrust load the wear rate was increased and the coefficient of friction was decreased, but with increasing sliding speed the wear rate and the coefficient of friction were decreased in 0.2~0.6m/sec and increased in 0.6~1.0m/sec, therefore 0.6m/sec in this testing is a transition velocity.
This paper presents a sensorless direct torque control (DTC) combined with sliding mode approach (SM) and space vector modulation (SVM) to achieve mainly a high performance and reduce torque and flux ripples of a parallel-connected two five-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drive system. In order to increase the proposed drive robustness and decrease its complexity and cost, the rotor speeds, rotor positions, fluxes as well as torques are estimated by using a sliding mode observer (SMO) scheme. The effectiveness of the proposed sliding mode observer in conjunction with the sliding mode control based DTC is confirmed through the application of different load torques for wide speed range operation. Comparison between sliding mode control and proportional integral (PI) control based DTC of the proposed two-motor drive is provided. The obtained speeds, torques and fluxes responses follow their references; even in low and reverse speed operations, load torques changes, and machines parameters variations. Simulation results confirm also that, the ripples of the torques and fluxes are reduced more than 3.33% and 16.66 %, respectively, and the speed overshoots and speed drops are reduced about 99.85% and 92.24%, respectively.
