Design of a Sliding Mode Control-Based Trajectory Tracking Controller for Marine Vehicles

  • A trajectory control system plays an important role in controlling motions of marine vehicle when a series of way points or a path is given. In this paper, a sliding mode control (SMC)-based trajectory tracking controller for marine vehicles is presented. A small-sized unmanned ship is considered as a control object. Both speed and heading angle of a ship should be controlled for tracking control. The common point of related researches was to separate ship's speed and heading angle in control methods. In this research, a new control law from a general sliding mode theory that can be applied to MIMO (multi input multi output) system is derived and both speed and heading angle of a ship can be controlled simultaneously. The propulsion force and rudder force are also applied in modeling stage to achieve accurate simulation. Disturbance induced by wind is also tackled in the dynamics considering robustness of the proposed control scheme. In the simulation, we employed a way-point method to generate ship's trajectory and applied the proposed control scheme to ship's trajectory tracking control. Our results confirmed that the tracking error was converged to zero, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, to overcome drawbacks of FLC a self tuning fuzzy sliding mode controller is proposed, which controls the position of excavator's attachment, which can be regarded as an ill-defined system. It is reported that fuzzy logic theory is especially useful in the control of ill-defined system. It is important in the design of a FLC to derive control rules in which the system's dynamic characteristics are taken into account. Control rules are usually established using trial and error methods. However, in the case where the dynamic characteristics vary with operating conditions, as in the operation of excavator attachment, it is difficult to find out control rules in which all the working condition parameters are considered. Experiments are carried out on a test bed which is built around a commercial Hyundai HX-60W hydraulic excavator. The experimental results show that both alleviation of chattering and performance are achieved. Fuzzy rules are easily obtained by using the proposed method and good performance in the following the desired trajectory is achieved. In summary, the proposed controller is very effective control method for the position control of the excavator's attachment.

  • Variable structure control is applied to the robust output tracking control problem of general nonlinear multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. Using the concept of relative degree and minimum phase, input/output(I/O) linearization is undertaken. For I/O the linearized system, a new sliding hyperplanes design method is proposed. In this procedure, we can construct very robust and efficient sliding mode controller for general nonlinear systems of relative degree higher than two. The control results are illustrated by adopting a numerical example.

  • This paper discusses sliding made control of robot manipurators assuming that nonlinear terms, which are inertia term, Coriolis force term and centrifugal taffn, are external disturbances. We obtained the unknown parameter of its linear terms by Signal Compression Method. We propose a new control input algorithm to decrease chattering in the application of sliding mode control of manipulator whose nonlinear components are regarded as disturbances. In this experiments, we used DSP(Digital Signal Processor) controller to suppress chattering by obtaining a quick switching speed.

  • This paper presents a sliding mode controller based on variable structure for the tip position control of a single-link flexible manipulator. Dynamic equations of a single-link flexible manipulator are derived from the Euler-Lagrange equation using a Lagrangian assumed modes method based on Bernoulli-Euler Beam theory. Simulation results are presented to show the validity of the system modeling, controller design.

  • DC motor has been widely used in industrial applications, because the performance is excellent on the speed and position system. However, when a system has parameter uncertainty, it is very difficult to guarantee its performance. Sliding mode control is robust for parameter uncertainty. However conventional sliding mode control can not have the properties of PID controller because its sliding surface has lower order dynamics than the original system. In this paper the sliding surface design method is proposed by using virtual state for DC motor speed control. Its design is based on the augmented system whose dynamics have one higher order than that of the original system. As a result, in spite of the parameter uncertainty, the proposed sliding surface can have the same dynamic of nominal system controlled by PID controller. And the reaching phase is removed by setting an initial state which makes the initial sliding surface equal to zero.

  • In this paper, an approach to autopilot design based on the robust nonlinear dynamic inversion method is proposed. Both unknown parameters and uncertainty bounds are estimated and parameter estimates are used in the fast inversion. Furthermore, to get more robustness slow inversion is incorporated with MRAC(Model Reference Adaptive Control) and sliding mode control where the estimates of uncertainty bounds are used. The proposed method is applied to the pitch autopilot design of a missile system and excellent performance is shown via computer simulation.

  • The TDCSA(Time Delay Control with Switching Action) method, which consists of Time Delay Control(TDC) and a switching action of sliding mode control(SMC), has been proposed as a promising technique in the robust control area, where the plant has unknown dynamics with parameter variations and substantial disturbances are preset. When TDCSA is applied to the plant with saturation nonlinearity, however, the so-called windup phenomena are observed to arise, causing excessive overshoot and instability. The integral element of TDCSA and the saturation element of a plant cause the windup phenomena. There are two integral effects in TDCSA. One is the integral effect occurred by time delay estimation of TDC. Other is the integral term of an integral sliding surface. In order to solve this problem, we have proposed an anti-windup scheme method for TDCSA. The stability of the overall system has been proved for a class of nonlinear system. Experiment results show that the proposed method overcomes the windup problem of the TDCSA.

  • Sliding mode control guarantees robustness in the presence of modeling uncertainties and external disturbances. However, this can be obtained at the cost of high control activity that may lead to chattering As one way to alleviate this problem a boundary layer around sliding surface is typically used. In this case the selection of controller gain, control ban width and boundary layer thickness is a crucial problem for the trade-off between tracking error and chattering. The parameter tuning is usually done by trail-and-error in practice causing significant effort and time. An auto tuning method based on fuzzy rules is proposed in the paper in this method tracking error and chattering are monitored by performance indices and the controller tunes the design parameters intelligently in order to compromise both indices. To demonstrate the efficiency of the propose method a mass-spring translation system and a roboic control system are simulated and tested It is shown that the proposed algorithm is effective to facilitae the parameter tuning for sliding mode controllers.

  • In this paper, a hierarchical nonsingular terminal sliding mode controller (TSMC) for overhead crane system using nonsingular terminal sliding surface (NTSS) is proposed, which can drive the error to zero in a finite time. Here, singular problem of controller is solved by NTSS. In addition, the controller has the double layer structure because the system is divided into two hierarchical subsystems. In the first layer, the nonsingular terminal sliding surfaces are hierarchically designed for each subsystem, and in the second layer, the whole sliding surface is designed as the linear combination of nonsingular terminal sliding surfaces. The asymptotic stability of the system is verified by Lyapunov analysis. Finally, we carry out simulations on the overhead crane system to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control method.
