This paper presents an LMI-based method to design an integral sliding mode controller for for a class of uncertain systems with mismatched unstructured uncertainties. The uncertain system under consideration may have mismatched parameter uncertainties in the state matrix as well as in the input matrix. Using LMIs we derive an existence condition of a sliding surface. And we give a switching feedback control law. Finally, we give a numerical design example in order to show that the proposed method can be better than the existing results.

This paper presents sliding mode control(SMC) method using target variation rate of Lypunov Function. SMC keeps the response of structure in sliding surface where structure is stable. It can design both linear controller and bang-bang controller. Linear control of previous research, however, can not make most of the performance of controller, because it is designed to satisfy the condition that the variation rate of Lyapunov function is minus. Also, incase of bang-bang controller, unnecessary large control force is generated. Presented method can utilize the capacity of controller efficiently by prescribing the target variation rate of Lyapunov function. Numerical simulation results indicate that the presented control methods can reduce the peak response larger than linear control, and it has control performance equivalent to bang-bang control.

Sliding mode control with nonlinear interpolation in the boundary layer is proposed. A modified sigmoid function is used for nonlinear interpolation in the boundary layer and its parameter is tuned by a fuzzy controller. The fuzzy controller that takes both the sliding variable and a measure of chattering as its inputs tunes the parameter of the modified sigmoid function. Owing to the decreased thickness of the boundary layer and the tuned parameter, the proposed method has superior tracking performance than the conventional linear interpolation method.
The uncertain integral linear system is the integral-augmented uncertain system to improve the resultant performance. In this note, for a MI(Multi Input) uncertain integral linear case, Utkin's theorem is proved clearly and comparatively. With respect to the two transformations(diagonalizations), the equation of the sliding mode is invariant. By using the results of this note, in the SMC for MIMO uncertain integral linear systems, the existence condition of the sliding mode on the predetermined sliding surface is easily proved. The effectiveness of the main results is verified through an illustrative example and simulation study.

In this paper, the general problem of impedance control for a robotic manipulator with a moving flexible base is addressed. Impedance control imposes a relation between force and displacement at the contact point with the environment. The concept of impedance control of flexible base mobile manipulator is rather new and is being considered for first time using singular perturbation and new sliding mode control methods by authors. Initially slow and fast dynamics of robot are decoupled using singular perturbation method. Slow dynamics represents the dynamics of the manipulator with rigid base. Fast dynamics is the equivalent effect of the flexibility in the base. Then, using sliding mode control method, an impedance control law is derived for the slow dynamics. The asymptotic stability of the overall system is guaranteed using a combined control law comprising the impedance control law and a feedback control law for the fast dynamics. As first time, base flexibility was analyzed accurately in this paper for flexible base moving manipulator (FBMM). General dynamic decoupling, whole system stability guarantee and new composed robust control method were proposed. This proposed Sliding Mode Impedance Control Method (SMIC) was simulated for two FBMM models. First model is a simple FBMM composed of a 2 DOFs planar manipulator and a single DOF moving base with flexibility in between. Second FBMM model is a complete advanced 10 DOF FBMM composed of a 4 DOF manipulator and a 6 DOF moving base with flexibility. This controller provides desired position/force control accurately with satisfactory damped vibrations especially at the point of contact. This is the first time that SMIC was addressed for FBMM.

This paper presents position control of an electro-hydraulic servo system whoch is operated by four 2-2way high speed on-off valves with either PWM PID control method or sliding mode control method, The advantages of using high speed on-off valves instead of electo-hydraulic servo valves or electro-hydraulic proportional valves are low price robustness for oil contamination and direct control without a D/A converter. The system consists of load cylinder inertia car potentiometer and external load cylinder. The experiments were carried out under several conditions and the results were compared. As a result the sliding mode method has shown good control performance and the robust and stable positioning of the elector-hydraulic servo system can be achieved accurately.

This paper proposes a new speed and flux estimation method which has the robustness against the variation of the electrical parameters of the motor and the superiority in the dynamic characteristics. In the proposed method, the stator currents and the rotor fluxes are observed on the stationary reference frame using the sliding mode concept. And the rotor speed is estimated using the current estimation errors and the observed rotor fluxes based on the Lyapunov stability theory. Also a design method of the observer gain is proposed to minimize the effect of the speed estimation error on the rotor flux observation. The experimental results are shown to verify that the proposed method shows the excellent performances under the variations of motor resistance and inductance.
In order to achieve the desired lightweight and robust design of a structure, it is preferable to design a structure and its control system, simultaneously, which is termed the combined optimal design. A constant-cross-sectional area cantilever beam was chosen as the optimum design method, An initial load and a time-varying disturbance were applied at the free end of the beam. Sliding mode control was selected, due to its insensitivity to the disturbance, compared with other modes. It is known that the sliding mode control is robust to the disturbance and is uncertain, only if a matching condition is met, after giving a switching hyper plane. In this study, the optimum method was used for the design of the switching hyper plane, and the objective function of the optimum switching hyper plane was assumed to be the objective of the control system. The total weight of the structure was treated as a constraint, and the cross sectional areas of the beam were considered as design variables, the result being a nonlinear programming problem. To solve it, the sequential linear programming method was applied. As a result of the optimum design, the effect of attenuating vibrations has been substantially improved. Moreover, the lightweight design of the structure became possible as a result of the relationship of the weight of the structure to the control objective function.

To achieve the lightweight and robust design of a structure, it is requested to design a structure and its control system simultaneously, which is called as the combined optimal design. A constant-cross-sectional area cantilever beam was chosen as an example for the applying the optimum design method. An initial load and a time varying disturbance were applied at the free end of the beam. Sliding mode control was selected due to its insensitiveness to the disturbance compared with other modes. It is known that the sliding mode control is robust to the disturbance and the uncertainty only if a matching condition is met, after giving a switching hyper plane. In this study, the optimum method was used for the design of the switching hyper plane and the objective function of the optimum switching hyper plane was assumed to be the objective one of the control system. The total weight of the structure was treated as a constraint and the cross sectional areas of the beam were considered as design variables, which means a nonlinear programming problem. The sequential linear programming method was applied to solve it. As a result of the optimum design, the effect of attenuating vibrations has been improved obviously. Moreover, lightweight design of the structure became possible from the relationship of the weight of the structure and the control objective function.
A control algorithm for seismic protection of building structures based on the theory of variable structural control or sliding mode control is presented. The paper focus in the design of sliding surface. A method for determining the sliding surface by pole assignment algorithm where the poles of the system in the sliding surface are obtained on-line, based on the frequency content of the incoming earthquake signal applied to the structure, is proposed. The proposed algorithm consists of the following steps: (i) On-line FFT process is applied to the incoming part of the signal and its frequency content is recognized. (ii) A transformation of the frequency content to the complex plane is performed and the desired location of poles of the controlled structure on the sliding surface is estimated. (iii) Based on the estimated poles the sliding surface is obtained. (iv) Then, the control force which will drive the response trajectory into the estimated sliding surface and force it to stay there all the subsequent time is obtained using Lyapunov stability theory. The above steps are repeated continuously for the entire duration of the incoming earthquake. The potential applications and the effectiveness of the improved control algorithm are demonstrated by numerical examples. The simulation results indicate that the response of a structure is reduced significantly compared to the response of the uncontrolled structure, while the required control demand is achievable.
