The static characteristics of air-lubricated slider bearing were performed using direct numerical method. The equations of motion of slider bearing are solved simultaneously with the Reynolds equation for three degrees of freedom. The molecular rarefaction effect is considered. The models implemented include the first-order slip, the second-order slip, and the Boltzmann equation model derived by Fukui and Kaneko(FK model)
As the demand for higher areal recording densities requires a lower flying height of the slider, the variation of the flying height of the slider during drive operation becomes of great concern. The variation of the flying height is closely related with the slider design parameters such as air bearing shape, cavity depth, shallow step depth, crown, camber, pitch offset, roll offset, gram load, and so on. The objective of this work is to optimize the cavity depth and the shallow step depth, which are the control factors in air bearing design, using Robust Design method. It was found that the shallow step depth was statistically significant in affecting the variation of flying height, therefore the level of the shallow step depth should be chosen to minimize the variation of flying height.

It is reported by many researchers that the textured bearing surfaces, where many tiny micro-pockets or enclosed recesses were incorporated, can enhance the load support and reduce friction force. Recently, the basic lubrication mechanism of micro-pocketed parallel surfaces are explained in terms of "inlet suction" using continuity equation and simply cavitation condition. However, it is required that more actual cavitation condition in the pocket region should be applied to estimate exact bearing performance. In this paper, a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT is used to investigate the exact lubrication characteristics of infinitely long slider bearing with micro-pockets. The results show that the pressure distributions are highly affected by pocket depths, its positions and numbers. The numerical method adopted in this paper and results can be use in optimal design of textured sliding bearings.

The AE measurement is one of the most convenient methods for detecting contacts between slider disk. The AE method has been widely used in the investigation of the tribology of sliding interfaces due to the convenience of using AE sensor. In this study, we examined the relationship between the AE signal and the flying height of a slider. We tried to know the influence of the disk velocity on the AE rms signal by using the AE measurement system. The experiment also gives the relationship between the take-off velocity and the disk surface state. To investigate the behavior of the slider further, the variances of the AE signal are analyzed. The results about a subambient pressure slider indicate that the increase in the magnitude of AE rms signal does not necessarily mean the slider/disk contacts.
In this study, a topological design sensitivity of the ai. bearing surface (ABS) is suggested by using an adjoint variable method. The discrete form of the generalized lubrication equation based on a control volume formulation is used as a compatible condition. A residual function of the slider is considered as an equality constraint function, which represents the slider in equilibrium. The slider thickness parameters at all grid cells are chosen as design variables since they are the topological parameters determining the ABS shape. Then, a complicated adjoint variable equation is formulated to directly handle the highly nonlinear and asymmetric coefficient matrix and vector in the discrete system equation of air-lubricated slider bearings. An alternating direction implicit (ADI) scheme is utilized for the numerical calculation. This is an efficient iterative solver to solve large-scale problem in special band storage. Then, a computer program is developed and applied to a slider model of a sophisticated shape. The simulation results of design sensitivity analysis (DSA) are directly compared with those of FDM at the randomly selected grid cells to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The overall distribution of DSA results are reported, clearly showing the region on the ABS where special attention should be given during the manufacturing process.
Recently, a load/unload(L/UL) system is adopted to the hard disk drive(HDD) due to its advantages such as lower power consumption, larger data zone, simpler fabrication of disk due to no bumped parking zone, and rarer contact between slider and media. An analysis of the transient motion for the slider is very important to design an air bearing surface(ABS) of the slider to secure the stable performance of the system. During the L/UL process, however, there are several issues occurred such as contact or collision between slider and media. Sometimes this will cause the system failure. In this study, the dynamics of a pico slider during the loading process are investigated through numerical simulation using FEM analysis and experiment. Ramp profile and angular velocity of the swing arm actuator are very important parameters for the design of L/UL system to avoid collision between slider and disk.

Flying attitudes of the slider, which are flying height, pitch and roll, are affected by the air flow velocity, the skew angle, and the manufacturing tolerances. Traditional designs of the air bearing surface have considered only the flying performances for the variations in the air flow velocity and the skew angle, which are determined by the radial position. In this study, we present the new shape design of the air bearing surface by considering the track seek performance and the air bearing stiffness as well as the traditional design requirements. The optimization technique is used to improve the dynamic characteristics and operating performance of the newly proposed air bearing surface shape design further. The optimized configuration is obtained automatically and the optimally designed sliders show the enhanced flying and dynamic characteristics.

This paper presents a method to predict the flying height of the head slider in a hard disk drive. Quantitative predicts of the flying height according to the variations of the external load and the disk velocity have been done by numerical computation. In addition, the magnitude of the external load to keep flying height constant were also suggested. The Modified Reynolds' equation driven from hydrodynamic lubrication theory under slip flow condition was used to describe air-bearing system under the slider. To solve the equation, a Finite Volume Method (FVM) has been applied. To determine the final minimum flying height and pitch angle of the head slider, the Secant iteration method is used which update initial guess of the minimum flying height and pitch angle of the slider. In this study, the model head slider has been selected from a real hard disk drive which is equipped in many commercial personal computers. As a result, as the disk velocity increases at constant external load, the minimum flying height and the pitch angle increase due to the in crease of the air-bearing force at the bottom of slider.
Surface texturing is widely applied to reduce friction and improve the reliability of machine elements. Despite extensive theoretical studies to date, most research has been limited to parallel thrust bearings, mechanical face seals, piston rings, etc. However, most sliding bearings have a convergent film shape in the sliding direction and the hydrodynamic pressure is mainly generated by the wedge action. The results of surface texturing on inclined slider bearings are largely insufficient. This paper is the first part of a recent study focusing on the effect of the groove position on the lubrication performances of inclined slider bearings. We model a slider bearing with one rectangular groove on a fixed pad and analyze the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT. The results show that the film convergence ratio and the groove position have a significant influence on the pressure and velocity distributions. There are groove positions to maximize the supporting load with the film convergence ratio and the groove reduces the frictional force acting on the slider. Therefore, the proper groove position not only improves the load-carrying capacity of the slider bearings but also reduces its frictional loss. The present results apply to various surface-textured sliding bearings and can lead to further studies.
