  • The purpose of this study is to grasp the opinion of Korean feminine seniors on the life support appliances for their healthy ageing: medication dispenser, video phone, activity monitor and sleep monitor. The focus group interviews, asking the usability of the appliances, were answered by each 6 feminine seniors of more than 65 years, residing in Corvallis of U.S.(group I), Cheongju(group II), and Ulsan(group III) of Korea. The results are as follows. (1) The medication dispenser proved to be very useful to all the respondents. All the seniors, who take more than one medicine a day, felt it helpful that the medication dispenser makes them to take medicines at fixed time. In addition, they hoped the medicine envelope to be developed for the dispenser use by the supply side. (2) The seniors showed interest in the manner the video phone works; to work by the voice, rather than by the finger. They expressed the hope of the video phone to display the communication contents, in consideration of their weakening hearing. (3) The seniors who live alone, especially, felt intimacy to the activity monitor, thinking as if some helpers were beside them. The fact that it can send emergency calls immediately when situations happen, gave the seniors emotional safety as a patron. (4) The sleep monitor, although essential to the serious cases without moving ability, was proved less necessary to the healthy seniors. They expressed the hope of this appliance to be evolved for the use with the mattress without bed.

  • Since its development in the early 70s, actigraphy has been widely used in sleep research and clinical sleep medicine as an assessment tool of sleep and sleep-wake cycles. The validation and reliability of actigraphic measures have been reasonably examined in healthy normal individuals with good sleep patterns. Recent literature suggests that the use of actigraphy could be further extended to monitor insomnia and circadian sleep-wake disturbances, and detect sleep changes associated with drug treatments and non-pharmacologic interventions, although it is generally recommended to use complementary assessments such as sleep diaries and overnight polysomnography when possible. The development of actigraphy includes its improved hardware sensors for better detection of movements and advanced algorithms to score sleep and wake epochs. In this paper, we briefly review the quantitative analysis methods of actigraphy and its potential applications in sleep research.

  • This paper proposes a virtual sleep sensor in order to monitor sleep disorder for an individual, and presents a therapy service model for the sleep management. PSQI score is usually used clinically to evaluate the levels of sleep disorder. However, The PSQI score which was only gleaned through an interview on a questionnaire can not be accurate because it is difficult to remember something about sleep during the last month. In order to resolve this problem, This paper presented the virtual sleep sensor that has a protocol to receive sleep information through physical sensors and smart algorithm. In addition, the virtual sleep sensor can be contributed to a service model for sleep therapy when it is combined with light therapy and aromatherapy. Finally, based on the findings of the experiment, its effectiveness was confirmed in the proposed model.

  • The number of people who are suffering from chronic sleep disorder has been growing dramatically in modern era. In order to diagonse the sleep disorder, sleep doctors perform polysomnography: Patients sleep with attaching several vital sign sensors on their body, and doctors monitor the patients in order to find the exact reason of the sleep disorder. Typical polysmonography makes patients sleep with several sensors on their bodies, which prevents the patients from making a comfortable sleep. Furthermore, it is impossible to have a long-term monitoring since the measurements should be done in sleep hosiptal within a few hours. In order to tackle these problems in the typical polysomnography, we envision the development of a non-contact long-term home polysomnography system using UWB radar and related technologies such as multi-modal signal processing.

  • Pilots' fatigue is one of the most serious threat to flying safety. Fatigue is influenced by many factors like sleep deprivation, daily activities, aging, stress, etc. This study was designed to investigate military pilots' daily activities. 20 pilots' daily activity was monitored by activity monitor, Fitbit(R), and the survey about sleep time and flight time was conducted. They placed Fitbit(R) on their waist for 5 days. During flight, they removed Fitbit(R) that had been used for checking their steps and walking distances. It was found that the average sleep time is 6.7 hours for fighter pilots. It was a little shorter than average sleep time for adults, 8 hours. Average steps per day was 6,838 which is more than sedentary worker's but less than active worker's. Their daily activities were not as high as we had expected. But their sleep time was very short. Flight surgeons should recommend them to take a rest and get sleep during rest period.

  • The goal of neuropsychological tests is to identify the neuropsychological dysfunction in psychiatric disorders such as organic mental disorders and schizophrenia, to develop the exe-cutive and monitor treatment plan and to make a cognitive rehabilitation program. Also, it will provide a more useful information that neurpsychological tests will be applied to neurotic out-patients in combination with conventional psychological test. However, many researches should be performed to further clarify the usefulness of neuropsychological test in neurosis.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the quality of sleep with the serum lipid profile in patients who have restless legs syndrome (RLS). Methods: The data were obtained from 116 patients with RLS through questionnaires and blood sampling. Results: The results of this study showed correlations between lower quality of sleep and serum lipid profile (LDL Cholesterol) in patients with RLS (r=.19, p=.040). There were correlations for scores of quality of sleep from the, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) sub-region between lower subjective sleep quality and serum lipid profile (LDL Cholesterol) (r=.20, p=.026), between fewer hours of sleep duration and serum lipid profile (Total Cholesterol) (r=-.21, p=.024), and, between higher daytime dysfunction and serum lipid profile (LDL Cholesterol) (r=.42, p<.001) of patients with RLS. Conclusion: Pati-ents with RLS have sleep disorders with lower quality of sleep and changes in the serum lipid profile for total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. That is, patients with RLS have lower quality of sleep and dyslipidemia compared to persons without RLS. Further research is needed to monitor serum the lipid profile in early stage symptoms of midlife adult patients with RLS and especially older women.

  • The World Health Organization(WHO) has recommended population of sleep disturbance as one of the environmental health indicators. But the percentage of respondents who felt highly sleep disturbed, that is, %HSD can???thave application to sleep disturbance from instantaneous noise. Therefore, this study has been carried out to present the technique for assessing sleep disturbance on instantaneous noise quantitatively. The study of sleep disturbance on night time instantaneous railway noise has been undertaken. Noise monitor has been in operation from 22 hours to 7 hours during 6 nights at 12 locations. To assess instantaneous noise induced sleep disturbance, it was decided to measure body movement by actiwatch. %motility was used as indicators of sleep disturbance. %motility is the expected value of probability of motility value during 7 epochs (105s) of any noise event. The measures of instantaneous motility have been related to measures of instantaneous railway noise events. The relationship shows that %motility is a good predictor for assessing sleep disturbance and Korean is more sensitive to noise than European although the railway noise have been considered in this study. This study can be extended to assessing long-term sleep disturbance and give a guideline far policy decision.
