  • Radio waves including GPS signals, various TV communications, and radio broadcasting can be disturbed by a strong solar storm, which may occur due to solar flares and produce an ionospheric delay anomaly in the ionosphere according to the change of total electron content. Electron density irregularities can cause deep signal fading, frequently known as ionospheric scintillation, which can result in the positioning error using GPS signal. This paper proposes a detection algorithm for the ionosphere delay anomaly during a solar storm by using multi-reference stations. Different TEC grid which has irregular electron density was applied above one reference station. Then the ionospheric delay in zenith direction applied different TEC will show comparatively large ionospheric zenith delay due to the electron irregularity. The ionospheric slant delay applied an elevation angle at reference station was analyzed to detect the ionospheric delay anomaly that can result in positioning error. A simulation test was implemented and a proposed detection algorithm using data logged by four reference stations was applied to detect the ionospheric delay anomaly compared to a criterion.

  • The flow field around a three dimensional minivan-like body has been simulated. This study solves 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system using second-order accurate schemes for the time derivatives, and third/second-order scheme for the spatial derivatives. The Marker-and-Cell concept is applied to efficiently solve continuity equation. A H-H type of multi-block grid system is generated around a three dimensional minivan-like body. Turbulent flows have been modeled by the Baldwin-Lomax turbulent model. To validate present procedure, the flows around the Ahmed body with 12.5° of slant angle are simulated. A good agreement with other numerical results is achived. After code validation, the flows around a mimivan-like body are simulated. The simulation shows three dimensional vortex-pair just behind body. The flow separation is also observed on the rear of the body. It has concluded that the results of present study properly agreed with physical flow phenomena.

  • Slanted and chirp interdigital transducer(IDT) configurations were studied for generating the surface acoustic wave(SAW) with wide bandwidths on a piezoelectric substrate. These devices can be applied to manipulate optical path of light along the waveguide, ultimately used for optical switches and holographic image implementation. Prior to fabrication, the coupling of modes(COM) modeling and simulation were performed to extract optimal design parameters. The optimally designed wideband device showed wide bandwidth of 30MHz, low insertion loss of -25dB, and abrupt side suppression ratio (SSR). Several design conditions were determined during device implementation, such as slanted angle, aperture length, number of fingers, and central frequencies of IDTs. These factors were experimentally analyzed and described in details in this paper.

  • In this paper, the demonstration of a 130-channel optical demultiplexer based on the cascaded volume holographic gratings is presented. By serially adding the second holographic grating, which has different grating period, slant angle, and center wavelength compared to those of the first grating, the operating wavelength range of the optical demultiplexer could be expanded, and therefore, the number of channels of the holographic demultiplexer is increased by twice. As a result of the experiment, a 0.4-nm-spaced demultiplexer with the channel uniformity of 3.5 dB, the 3dB-bandwidth of 0.12nm, and the channel crosstalk of -20dB is experimentally achieved.

  • This paper presents a technique to detect a document skew that often occurs during document scanning. To correct a skewed document is essential for automatic processing system including character segmentation, character recognition and so on. The proposed algorithm can detect a skew angle exactly by searching characters baselines that have slant information of the document within a candidated area. To reduce processing time, we resized the image small and then established a ROI (region of interest) by morphology operations and connected components analysis. We compared our method with the existing method based on morphology operations and proved correctness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm through experiments and analysis with various kind of document images.

  • The present study aims to investigate characteristics of the flow structures around the Ahmed body by using both experimental and numerical methods. Therefore, 1/4 scale Ahmed body having $25^{\circ}$ slant angle was employed. The Reynolds number based on the body height, H and the free stream velocity, U was $Re_H=1.48{\times}10^4$. Investigations were conducted in two parts. In the first part of the study, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method was used to resolve the flow structures around the Ahmed body, numerically. In the second part of the study the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to measure instantaneous velocity fields around the Ahmed body. Time-averaged and instantaneous velocity vectors maps, streamline topology and vorticity contours of the flow fields were presented and discussed in details. Comparison of the mean and turbulent quantities of the LES results and the PIV results with the results of Lienhart et al. (2000) at different locations over the slanted surface and in the wake region of the Ahmed body were also given. Flow features such as critical points and recirculation zones in the wake region downstream of the Ahmed body were well captured. The spectra of numerically and experimentally obtained stream-wise and vertical velocity fluctuations were presented and they show good consistency with the numerical result of Minguez et al. (2008).

  • The models used for ionosphere error correction in positioning using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) are representatively Klobuchar model and NeQuick model. Although these models can correct the ionosphere error in real time, the disadvantage is that the accuracy is only 50-60%. In this study, a method for polynomial modeling of Global Ionosphere Map (GIM) which provides Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) in grid type was studied. In consideration of Ionosphere Pierce Points (IPP) of satellites with a receivable elevation angle of 15 degrees or higher on the Korean Peninsula, the target area for model generation and provision was selected, and the VTEC at 88 GIM grid points was modeled as a polynomial. The developed VTEC polynomial model shows a data reduction rate of 72.7% compared to GIM regardless of the number of visible satellites, and a data reduction rate of more than 90% compared to the Slant Total Electron Content (STEC) polynomial model when there are more than 10 visible satellites. This VTEC polynomial model has a maximum absolute error of 2.4 Total Electron Content Unit (TECU) and a maximum relative error of 9.9% with the actual GIM. Therefore, it is expected that the amount of data can be drastically reduced by providing the predicted GIM or real-time grid type VTEC model as the parameters of the polynomial model.

  • In order to effectively isolate the marine wastes with an effluent standard, the pretreatment process is required to isolate solid materials from the liquid-solid mixed wastes. The more effective the pretreatment becomes, the more processing capacity of posttreatment will be improved and process facilities will be downsized. In this paper, we suggested the vibrating reverse-slant screen, investigated the optimal vibration frequency and vibrator installation angle for the separation of the liquid solid mixed wastes. Several experiments for separation efficiency were conducted under the condition of various vibration frequency($35{\sim}60Hz$, 5Hz interval) and vibrator angle($0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$) considering the crack of screen. The screen inclination angle is set up the gradient as $3^{\circ}{\sim}5^{\circ}$ through the preliminary experiments. Also, we made two types of screen(respectively rectangle and square screen). The separation device has shown the optimum efficiency at vibrator angle $0^{\circ}$ and vibration frequency 60Hz, and has no relation with the shape of screen. And the proposed technology is verified by comparing with quantity of suspended solids before and after filtration.

  • Holographic volume grating couplers (VGCs) are become increasingly attractive device for the application of optical interconnects because of their higher preferential coupling, dry fabrication processing, compact, and low cost. In this paper, the analysis, design, and implementation of the waveguide-imbedded input-output VGC with $45^{\circ}$ grating slant angle using holographic photopolymer(Dupont HRF600-20) for guided-wave optical interconnection applications, are presented. To show the usefulness of the proposed VGC, we fabricated the VGCs operating at 632.8nm and 1550nm wavelengths and its results are presented. The measured input coupling efficiency of the single VGC with $0.5{\mu}m$ grating period at 632.8nm wavelength is above 86.6% for TE-polarization. The input coupling efficiency of the $1\times2$ VGC with $0.73068{\mu}m$ grating period at 1550nm wavelength is about 90.8%.
